A mother’s worst nightmare unfolded on a busy Indiana highway when her infant son stopped breathing. Thanks to quick-thinking law enforcement officers, that nightmare didn’t end in tragedy.

A Mother’s Panic Turns to Action

February 26 started like any other day for Sara Flowers, a mother of three. But it quickly turned into the most terrifying day of her life. She was driving along I-69 when her 3-month-old son, Jaxon, suddenly stopped breathing.

His apnea monitor sounded the alarm. Flowers’ mother, sitting in the backseat, checked on him and saw his tiny body turning blue. The panic set in, but Flowers didn’t freeze. As an ER nurse, she knew exactly what to do. She pulled over, called 911, and began CPR on her own baby.

An Off-Duty Trooper Steps In

Help came quicker than she could have imagined. An off-duty Indiana State Trooper, driving nearby, noticed the situation and pulled over. Without hesitation, he stepped in to assist Flowers in the life-saving effort.

“I can’t thank him enough,” Flowers said, still overwhelmed by the events. “It was God that let him be that close to us.”

Every second counted. The officer worked alongside Flowers, making sure Jaxon had the best possible chance to breathe again.

Backup Arrives: Dekalb County Deputies Join the Effort

The emergency didn’t go unnoticed. Within moments, several Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office Deputies arrived at the scene, bringing additional support. Their presence provided crucial assistance during the frantic efforts to save the infant.

Flowers credits them with saving her son’s life.

“They all just keep checking in on him, sending their prayers,” she said. “I hope once he gets out that we can all meet so they can see what they did for us.”

A Baby on the Mend

After the harrowing ordeal, Jaxon was rushed to Lutheran Hospital, where he received medical attention. The good news? He’s recovering well and has been taken off oxygen. The relief in Flowers’ voice is unmistakable as she shares the update.

Jaxon’s survival is nothing short of a miracle. The quick response from his mother, an off-duty officer, and local deputies turned what could have been an unspeakable tragedy into a story of hope and gratitude.
