Joshua St. John has been selected as the next superintendent of Southwest Allen County Schools (SACS) following a unanimous vote by the district’s Board of Trustees on Tuesday. He will take over leadership as the district prepares for a transition in its top administrative ranks.
Leadership Transition and Experience
St. John, currently serving as assistant superintendent for SACS, was previously identified as a potential successor to Superintendent Kent DeKoninck, who announced his intention to step down last month. Though stepping down as superintendent, DeKoninck will remain with the district as Chief Administrative Officer starting June 30, 2025.
With over 26 years in public education, including 17 years with SACS, St. John has built a career spanning multiple roles. His background includes experience as a math teacher, athletic director, assistant principal, and principal.
Board Excitement and Future Vision
SACS School Board President Kim Moppert expressed confidence in St. John’s leadership.
“He has consistently demonstrated a deep understanding of our district’s strengths and a clear vision for its future,” Moppert said. “His leadership, passion for education, and commitment to student achievement make him the ideal choice to guide SACS forward, enhancing the educational experience for all.”
Academic and Community Initiatives
St. John has been actively involved in efforts aimed at curriculum development, student achievement, and fostering community relationships within the district. According to a district news release, he is focused on “advancing academic excellence, supporting student well-being, and driving educational innovation.”
“I am truly honored to serve as superintendent and am deeply committed to the success of SACS and its students,” St. John said. “Together, with our dedicated staff, students, and families, we will build upon the strong foundation established by Dr. DeKoninck and past district leaders, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous growth to ensure the best possible future for all our students.”
DeKoninck’s Tenure and Future Role
DeKoninck has played a key role in district leadership, previously retiring in 2021 before returning as superintendent last June. With his transition to Chief Administrative Officer, the district aims to ensure continuity in its leadership while embracing a new chapter under St. John’s direction.
