Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance Celebrates Birth of Giraffe Calf

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance (DZCA) is celebrating a major milestone with the birth of a reticulated giraffe calf. The newborn arrived on the morning of March 7, marking a significant moment for giraffe conservation efforts.

A Long-Awaited Arrival

After an extensive 444-day pregnancy, four-year-old BB gave birth to her first calf. The healthy male is also the first offspring for Jasiri, BB’s four-year-old mate. The birth is a critical step in supporting the endangered species, as reticulated giraffe populations continue to decline in the wild.

Healthy and Thriving

DZCA’s animal care and health teams report that both BB and her calf are thriving in their indoor habitat. BB has displayed strong maternal instincts, with the calf standing and nursing shortly after birth.

“Delivery went very smoothly,” said Maura Davis, Curator of Large Mammals. “The teams have been watching cameras throughout the night during her birth window to check for signs of labor. Little feet were seen at about 4 a.m., and the calf was on the ground at 6 a.m. BB is doing a great job!”

Private Bonding Time

For now, BB and her calf will remain behind the scenes in their indoor habitat to bond and adjust to their new surroundings. The area will remain temporarily closed to guests to ensure a stress-free environment for mother and baby.

What’s Next for the Calf?

The newborn will soon be introduced to his father, Jasiri, and the herd’s other member, Dobby, before making his highly anticipated public debut.
