Valheim Crossplay Opens Every Platform but Locks Most Saves
Valheim 1.0 crossplay now spans PS5, Switch 2, Xbox and PC, but only Xbox and Microsoft Store PC share saves.
Valheim 1.0 turned on crossplay across PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 9. Friends on those platforms can share one world through a join code. A Steam viking still cannot load on a PlayStation or a Switch 2.
Iron Gate shipped the Deep North with that handshake after five years and seven months of Early Access. The studio’s own FAQ draws a harder line on where a character file is allowed to live.
Valheim Crossplay Now Covers Every Platform
The session is the part that actually changed. A Steam player, an Xbox player, a PS5 player and a Switch 2 player can stand in the same seed, fight the same night and share the same longhouse, as long as everyone is on the 1.0 build.
Coffee Stain and Iron Gate put that roster on the calendar in June, promising 1.0 on September 9th for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, Nintendo Switch 2, Linux and Mac. Steam still sells Windows, Linux and Mac. The Mac App Store, Humble and the Microsoft Store also carry PC builds. Xbox has had the game since March 14, 2023. PS5 and Switch 2 arrived with 1.0.
The cap is unchanged: 1 to 10 players. That is the whole party, mixed hardware included.
WHERE VALHEIM 1.0 LETS YOU PLAY AND SAVE
| Platform | Crossplay | Cross-save | Can host a dedicated server |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam (Windows, Linux, Mac) | Yes | None | Yes |
| Microsoft Store PC | Yes | With Xbox, same account | Yes |
| Xbox One and Series X/S | Yes | With Microsoft Store PC | No |
| PlayStation 5 | Yes | None | No |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Yes | None | No |
| Mac App Store / Humble PC | Yes | None | Yes on PC builds |
Crossplay here means a shared session, not a shared locker. That gap is the 1.0 rule, not a missing toggle in a menu.
Xbox Is the Only Save Bridge
Iron Gate answered the save question in one paragraph. If you play on Xbox, you can open those files on a PC when you launch the Microsoft Store build. Beyond that, the studio said there is no cross platform sync for saves.
If you are playing on an Xbox, you will be able to access your saves from a PC, provided that you launch the game from the Microsoft store. Beyond this, there will be no cross platform sync for your save files.
Iron Gate, Valheim 1.0 FAQ
A Steam character from 2021 stays a Steam character. A PS5 run started on launch night stays on PlayStation. Switch 2 is the same wall. You can visit a friend’s world. You cannot pack your inventory, your map progress and your house key onto another storefront and keep walking.
That is why the quiet purchase fork is Xbox versus Switch 2, not Xbox versus PlayStation. Microsoft already had the Game Pass and Microsoft Store path. Sony and Nintendo joined the session. They did not join the cloud locker. A couch player who also keeps a Windows box in the other room only gets a portable save if both ends are Microsoft.
Old files are not deleted. They sit where you left them, and 1.0 will still open them. They just will not follow you to a new badge on the same TV.
How Do Friends Join From a Console?
Mixed groups do not type an IP on a PlayStation. The host turns on crossplay, starts the world, opens the pause menu and copies a six-digit join code. Everyone else goes to Join Game, adds the server with that code and the password, and drops in.
HOW A MIXED GROUP GETS IN
- Open the world: Create or pick the seed, then enable crossplay for the session before you invite anyone.
- Start the server: Run the multiplayer world and open the pause menu; the join code sits there to copy.
- Share the digits: Send the current code and the password. Friends on PS5, Switch 2, Xbox and PC all use the same pair.
- Join by code: In Join Game, add the server with that code. A typo in the password is enough to bounce you.
- Match the build: Everyone needs the same Valheim version. A leftover Early Access client will not handshake with 1.0.
Server operators who already ran Xbox-to-PC rooms say that code is tied to the session, not to the machine. Restart the process and PlayFab hands out a new number. Do not paint last night’s digits on a Discord banner and expect them to work after a reboot. Steam players can still connect by IP on a Steam-only box. Once crossplay is on, the living-room path is the code.
A player-hosted world still dies when the host logs out. That was true in Early Access and it is true on 1.0. If the group wants the seed running while everyone is at work, someone has to leave a PC on or rent a dedicated box.
No Dedicated Server Runs on a Console
The dedicated server is a PC application. PS5, Switch 2 and Xbox can join one. They cannot run one. A console-only group that wants a world up at 3 a.m. is buying hosting, or they are asking a PC friend to leave a tower humming in another city.
That is the bill the launch quietly sent to living rooms. Hosting companies spent the week selling 24/7 crossplay plans, because the new platforms cannot keep the fire lit by themselves. The join-code model is convenient. It is also a product.
THE ROAD TO A SHARED LONGHOUSE
- February 2, 2021: Enters Early Access on Steam and starts the five-year run that built most of today’s characters.
- March 14, 2023: Arrives on Xbox One, Xbox Series consoles and the Microsoft Store, with Steam-to-Xbox sessions already on.
- June 8, 2026: Iron Gate and Coffee Stain lock September 9 for 1.0, PlayStation 5, Switch 2 and crossplay on every platform.
- September 9, 2026: 1.0 goes live at the Steam post’s 5:55 a.m. PDT stamp, and join codes start binding sofa players to PC worlds.
The June promise was the one players had been waiting on. The official account put the date on the calendar itself.

Launch night still had storefront friction. Some PlayStation buyers spent the evening hunting a listing that was not where they expected it. The session feature is live. Finding the SKU was the first chore.
Console Friends Get a Vanilla World
Iron Gate has no official mod support on PC and none on consoles. There is no Steam Workshop. Mods will take time to catch 1.0, the studio said, and it will not promise they load.
The harder limit is the client. A PS5, Switch 2 or Xbox cannot install BepInEx. Any plugin that must sit on every player shuts those friends out, whatever the server is doing. Mods that key off Steam IDs also break when a console account walks in.
Some hosts still run server-side-only plugins on a crossplay box. That is a per-mod bet, not a feature Iron Gate ships. If the group includes a sofa, the safe 1.0 table is vanilla. The Thunderstore pile stays a Steam-only night on a second world.
Five years of iteration is why the vanilla build still feels like one game rather than a stack of biomes glued together. That is the trade a mixed group is making: the same world, without the quality-of-life pack PC clans treated as default.
Steam’s 167,999 Peak Leaves 2021 Untouched
Steam is no longer the whole census. PS5, Switch 2 and Xbox players do not show up in that chart, and they were the point of the day. Even so, the PC spike was the first one in years that looked like a launch.
STEAM ON THE 1.0 LAUNCH
- 24-hour peak: Steamcharts recorded a 167,999 player 24-hour peak as 1.0 landed.
- All-time peak: 498,478, set in February 2021, still stands. The new figure is about a third of that record.
- August peak: 30,973 in the last full Early Access month, so the launch day ran more than five times that high.
- 30-day average: 18,243 players, a blend of the quiet August baseline and the September spike.
The 2021 crowd was a pandemic meme that swallowed Steam. This crowd is a finished game plus three new storefronts the chart cannot see. Treat 167,999 as the PC room, not the raid.
Deep North Lands at $29.99
Crossplay is the handshake. The reason veterans reinstalled is the ice. Iron Gate’s abbreviated Valheim 1.0 patch notes put the Deep North at the top of the list, then a long pile of gear and building kit.
WHAT 1.0 PUT IN THE BOX
- The biome: Deep North, plus new locations, music, events and mechanics, with upgradeable pockets and achievements.
- Combat kit: 40+ new weapons, new bombs and ammunition, 4 new armour sets, 2 capes, 2 trinkets and new tools.
- The bestiary: 10+ new creatures, with enemy spawn chance in Ashlands rebalanced on the side.
- Building and food: 80+ new buildable pieces, 5 new crafting stations, 30+ new materials and 20+ new foods.
The engine moved to a new Unity build. Draw distance got its own slider. Hair and beard styles are unlocked from the start. Large player builds were not the target of the smoothness pass; Iron Gate said it will keep working on that after 1.0.
New buyers pay the full release price of $29.99, with regional differences. Early Access copies update. You do not buy the game twice. Bugfixes and quality-of-life patches will continue. Extra biomes after Deep North are, in the studio’s words, too soon to say. The Ocean got nothing specific in this drop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Early Access Owners Have to Buy Valheim 1.0 Again?
No. Iron Gate said the Early Access copy updates the way every prior patch did. The $29.99 tag is for new purchases, and the FAQ flags that some regions will differ. The 1.0 content is on the copy you already own.
Can You Unlock Achievements on an Old Save?
Tracking starts when you download 1.0, so an Eikthyr kill from 2021 does not pop the new achievement; you have to kill him again. Most cheat commands flag that character and world for good. Picking up a spawned item puts you in a temporary cheat state until you dump those marked items. Hammer-mode counts as a temporary cheat and blocks some achievements.
Will an Old World Get the Deep North?
Unexplored map can still generate the new biome. Chunks you already walked will not regenerate into ice. Iron Gate still recommends a fresh world if you want the intended route through 1.0, and it says you can charge straight at the Deep North on an old character if you insist.
How Large Is the Valheim 1.0 Download?
About 4.3GiB on most platforms. Xbox One is smaller, around 3.0GiB. The Mac App Store and Microsoft Store builds are larger, about 6.5GiB. Those figures are Iron Gate’s estimates from the July FAQ.
Will Valheim Add More Biomes After 1.0?
The studio will keep shipping bugfixes and quality-of-life work. It will not say how long that lasts, and it will not say whether more content is coming. The 1.0 patch does not add Ocean biome work; Deep North was the focus.
A PS5 player can stand in a Steam friend’s Deep North tonight, then log off with a file that PlayStation will keep and Steam will never open. The join code works. The chest stays shut.
