Squishy Dumpling Toys Recalled After Hiding Illegal Water Beads

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on September 3, 2026, recalled about 15,200 food-shaped squishy dumpling toys because they hide water beads. The fidgets sold in tan bamboo-steamer baskets printed “SQUEEZE ME” and “SUGAR EDITION,” after a March 12, 2026 rule already capped how large toy beads may grow.

Steamer Baskets Labeled Sugar Edition

The recalled fidgets are round, translucent squeeze balls with cartoon faces and glitter-like specks. They sit in a tan plastic cup shaped like a dim-sum steamer, the same prop a bakery would use for buns. One removable label says “SQUEEZY DUMPLINGS.” The other says “Rainbow MYSTERY” and “SUGAR EDITION.”

CPSC describes water beads as looking harmless, almost like candy. Pair that with a toy that already looks like food, and a toddler does not need a science kit to put the filling in a mouth. The agency’s hazard language is blunt: if swallowed, the beads expand and can choke a child or block the gut, with vomiting, dehydration, and a risk of death.

Neither toy carries maker marks on the squishy itself. Parents who bought a “mystery” glitter dumpling are holding a snack-shaped object whose only ID is a peel-off sticker on a steamer.

The Beads Were Already Over the Legal Limit

This is not a brand-new poison. CPSC’s federal safety standard for water beads took effect March 12, 2026, and sets a maximum expansion size, an acrylamide cap, and warning labels. Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman said beads that fail the new tests are illegal to sell in the United States, and that most makers are based in China.

The OKK Trading notice goes further than a generic bead warning. It says the Rainbow Mystery bun toys violate the mandatory toy standard because the water beads inside expand larger than permitted. Those buns still reached third-party stores from May 2026 through August 2026. The GIHNJSI dumplings sold on Amazon in May and June, the same window.

CPSC counted an estimated 6,300 water-bead ingestion injuries treated in U.S. emergency departments from 2017 through 2022, and one reported death, a 10-month-old girl in 2023. Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, writing in Academic Pediatrics, logged 20,279 water bead ingestions among children younger than 6 reported to U.S. poison centers from 2019 through 2024. Most of those calls started at home.

Which Squishy Dumpling Toys Are Recalled?

Ivyapingdianpu Has Not Agreed to a Refund

The third bun is the tell. CPSC says it issued a Notice of Violation to Nananshixianzhoumaoyiyouxiangongsi, doing business as Ivyapingdianpu, of China, because the toys violate the mandatory water-bead standard. The steamer reads “SQUISHY BUN” and “Rainbow MYSTERY.” About 100 units sold on Amazon in June 2026, and possibly through other vendors.

On September 3 the agency wrote that Ivyapingdianpu has not agreed to recall the toys or offer a remedy. Buyers of that SKU get a public warning and a dump instruction, not a check. Federal law still bars resale of a product under a Commission-ordered or CPSC-consulted recall; a refused warning sits in a grayer pile, which is why the post exists.

Chenyuanhui’s refund address is a 163.com inbox. OKK’s is recall@okktoys.com, attached to a Vernon importer with a U.S. street. The Amazon seller that will not recall is a long Chinese company name behind a storefront handle. That split, not the glitter, is what decides whether a parent can get $20 back.

355,683 Units Stopped at the Ports

CPSC already knew the dumpling shape was a problem. On August 5, 2026, it warned that fake and counterfeit squishy toys, including popular animal, food, and character-shaped squeeze toys, were moving through online marketplaces, social posts, and discount stores. Heat Turns the Same Toys Into Burn Hazards

The bead is one failure. Heat is the other. CPSC’s August 5 alert repeated a warning about videos that dare kids and teens to microwave squishy toys until they swell, change texture, or burst. The agency says those clips should never be copied. The same filling can cook in a parked car, in sun on a dashboard, or next to a heater, then split and stick to skin while it is still hot.

CPSC tells buyers to stop using any squishy with an unknown maker, missing safety text, a strong chemical smell, an oily or sticky feel, a leak, or a skin that tears easily. A 10-year-old named Bella was burned after microwaving a squishy for a social challenge. A West Virginia teen went to hospital after a toy left in a hot car burst and threw molten gel on her legs. • Bargain tell: A price far below a known brand, plus misspelled art, can mark a fake.

If a heated toy bursts, CPSC says to keep children off the filling and to treat a burn with cool running water. The steamer dumplings now being pulled for beads can fail that heat test too if someone tries the microwave dare on a “mystery” bun.

CPSC’s remedy is a photo of trash. Stop using the GIHNJSI dumpling or the OKK Rainbow Mystery bun at once.
