Hotel Coupons Filled Disney Theme Parks in a Soft Summer

Disney theme parks posted a 3% attendance gain after hotel coupons and packages, while Universal’s older Orlando gates and SeaWorld lost visits.

Disney’s domestic theme parks posted a 3% attendance gain in the quarter ended June 27, 2026. Walt Disney World led that rise after a summer of hotel coupons and ticket packages.

The $209 Magic Kingdom ceiling did not come down. The cheap seats were extra hotel nights, Visa card rates, and kids tickets, and Experiences profit still climbed because two new cruise ships and higher ticket yield did work the coupons never had to do.

Domestic Tourists Filled the International Gap

In the shareholder letter dated Aug. 5, 2026, CEO Josh D’Amaro and CFO Hugh Johnston said global guests across Experiences grew 4%, while attendance at the U.S. parks grew 3%. They called Walt Disney World a stand-out, with “healthy core attendance increases from domestic tourists and annual passholders, and effective summer promotions and new experiences that further supplemented growth.”

I think there was a belief going into Q3 earnings that we were gonna be challenged in Orlando. In fact, the numbers were quite the opposite.

Hugh Johnston, chief financial officer, Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference, Sept. 9, 2026

Visitors from other countries were still a drag on the U.S. gates, though the company said that gap eased versus the prior quarter. Johnston told the same conference that Disney had “pivoted our marketing and pivoted our promotional activity to a domestic audience, and that played out very well.”

He also said the company was “gaining share.” That is a polite way to describe a summer in which Universal’s older Orlando parks and SeaWorld were the ones talking about missing guests.

What Disney Discounted Instead of the $209 Ticket

On Oct. 8, 2025, Walt Disney World lifted dated tickets again. A one-day Magic Kingdom pass ran from $139 on a handful of quiet dates to $209 at the Christmas peak, the first time that ticket had broken $200. Disneyland’s top one-day price sat at $224.

The summer 2026 answer was not a lower list price. It was a stack of special offers on tickets, rooms and packages aimed at families who would wait for a deal.

THE SUMMER 2026 DISNEY DEALS

  • Four-park ticket: A 4-day, 4-park Magic Ticket started at $109 per day, $436 plus tax, for start dates from May 26 to Sept. 26, 2026, and had to be used within seven days of that start date.
  • Room coupons: Select Disney Resorts Collection hotels sold stays at up to 30% off for five or more nights and up to 25% off for one to four nights, including a late-summer window from July 30 to Oct. 3.
  • Passholder rooms: Annual passholders could take up to 40% off for four or more nights and up to 35% off for shorter stays in that same late-summer window.
  • Buy four, get two: A Walt Disney Travel Company room-and-ticket package added two free nights and two park days on a four-night, four-day stay for most arrivals from May 26 to Sept. 15.
  • Kids tickets: Children ages 3 to 9 could buy a three-day or longer ticket at 50% off for visits from May 27 through Sept. 20.
  • Disneyland Visa rate: Cardholders who paid the deposit with a Disney Visa could save up to 25% on select rooms Sunday through Thursday from May 22 through Sept. 7, with standard rooms at up to 20% off.

Cool KIDS’ SUMMER ran from May 26 to Sept. 8, with early park entry and character time attached to resort stays. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin reopened at Magic Kingdom in the same window. The pitch to a family like Doug Heyden Jr.’s, who used a Disney hotel rate and a Disney Visa to reach Magic Kingdom with infant twins, was a bundled trip, not a cheaper castle ticket on a peak Saturday.

Soft Summer at Universal’s Older Orlando Gates

Comcast spent the same months drawing a line through its own resort. On the July 23, 2026, earnings call, co-CEO Mike Cavanagh said the parks’ operating environment had softened more than the company had planned. Epic Universe, which opened in May 2025, was still “delivering the strong guest response we expected.” Attendance across the broader Orlando market, he said, began to soften in June and kept sliding into the third quarter.

We believe there are some temporary factors at work, including higher fuel prices and weaker consumer sentiment, but we are watching these trends closely.

Mike Cavanagh, co-CEO, Comcast, second-quarter earnings call, July 23, 2026

Cavanagh did not publish an Orlando attendance percentage. He did say the softness “is essentially weakness in attendance,” and that Epic was lifting per-guest spend and helping turn Universal Orlando into a longer stay. In other words, the new gate was doing its job while the rest of the destination was not filling around it.

At Goldman Sachs in September, Comcast CFO Jason Armstrong said nothing in the later weeks had changed. “We’re continuing to see softness in that market,” he said, splitting the blame between gas, airfares, and a hangover from Epic’s first-year rush. A year earlier, that rush had pulled guests out of rival parks. In 2026, Universal had to lap its own opening.

SeaWorld’s 179,000 Missing Visits

United Parks & Resorts, the parent of SeaWorld and Busch Gardens, put numbers on the same squeeze. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, it hosted 6.06 million guests, down 179,000, or 2.9%, from 6.23 million a year earlier. Revenue fell 1.4% to $483.3 million. Net income fell 21% to $63.3 million. Adjusted EBITDA fell 5.2% to $195.5 million.

Admission spend per guest dropped 1.8% to $40.31. In-park spend rose 5.1% to a quarterly record $39.51, so total revenue per guest still edged up 1.5% to $79.82. CEO Marc Swanson said an earlier Easter and weaker visits from other countries explained the hole, and that attendance would have been flat after those adjustments. For the first six months, attendance was 9.3 million, down 3.6%.

Location-data firm Advan, in a Sept. 10 note by Thomas Paulson, put a map on the split: Disney won Florida, and Universal won California. SeaWorld, Paulson wrote, was the share donor. Advan’s Orlando read is domestic-only; it still saw SeaWorld Orlando down in July and August and roughly flat for the full season, with visits from abroad likely pulling reported counts into a 2% to 3% decline.

HOW THE THREE OPERATORS FINISHED THE STRETCH

Operator Print Attendance What moved
Disney domestic parks Quarter ended June 27, 2026 Up 3% Domestic tourists, passholders, summer packages
Universal Orlando Comcast call, July 23, 2026 Soft from June; no % given Older gates vs Epic Universe anniversary
United Parks (SeaWorld) Quarter ended June 30, 2026 Down 2.9% (179,000 guests) Easter shift, fewer overseas visitors

Advan’s California read cuts against a simple “Universal is down everywhere” line. Universal Studios Hollywood grew observed visits, helped by Super Nintendo World and a World Cup crowd in Los Angeles. Disneyland’s observed domestic visits were modestly lower year over year in that dataset, which measures a different thing than Disney’s combined 3% for Florida and California together.

Destiny and Adventure Did the Heavy Lifting

The park coupons did not show up as a profit collapse. Disney’s Experiences segment booked $9.97 billion in revenue, up 10%, and Experiences operating income rose 20% to $3.02 billion from $2.52 billion. About $100 million of that was a tariff refund, which Disney said was roughly four points of the 20% rise, with no effect on segment revenue.

DISNEY EXPERIENCES, QUARTER ENDED JUNE 27, 2026

  • Domestic attendance: Up 3%, with global guests across Experiences up 4%.
  • Ticket yield: Admissions revenue rose 9%, to $3.25 billion, on 5% higher average per-capita ticket revenue and 3% more attendance.
  • Guest spend: Per-capita guest spending at domestic parks rose 4%; food, merchandise and beverage rose 7%.
  • Hotels and ships: Resorts and vacations revenue rose 17%, to $2.77 billion, on 10% more passenger cruise days, 2% higher average daily hotel rates, and 2% more occupied room nights.

Those cruise days came from the Disney Destiny, which entered service in November 2025, and the Disney Adventure, which launched in March 2026. Parks and Experiences revenue as a whole rose 10%, which Disney split as about 6% volume and 3% rate. Domestic parks and experiences revenue rose 11%.

Johnston later said per-capita growth was coming mostly from mix and add-ons such as Lightning Lane, VIP tours, and premium dining, not from another raw ticket hike. He also said Disney uses “value-based pricing” to keep young families in the parks on weaker dates. That is the coupon strategy in finance language: hold the $209 banner, then fill Tuesday in August.

Wait Times Fell While Turnstiles Ticked Higher

People who walk those parks for a living did not describe a packed summer. After Johnston called Walt Disney World attendance “very strong” on Aug. 5, Orlando regulars answered that the same months had felt empty next to a dozen earlier summers, and that late June in particular ran light. In mid-September, well after Labor Day and during Halloween party season, some of the quietest Walt Disney World days since 2020 showed up on the same unofficial counts.

Those street reads do not cancel the 3% figure in the 10-Q. They fit a mix shift. Extra guests on discounted hotel nights, weekday arrivals, and late-night tickets can raise the turnstile count while shortening the line at Space Mountain. Advan said Disney’s Orlando parks also logged longer average visits, which helps food and merch even when the midway looks calm.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party gave Magic Kingdom a second lift into the fall, Advan said, and the Kingdom led observed-visit growth for both the full season and July through August. Weather helped. Orlando in 2025 had a late-July heat dome and Hurricane Erin; 2026 did not. D’Amaro, in his first months as CEO, put it more simply on the earnings call: the company had been “deploying promotional offers regularly.”

The 30% Hotel Coupon Left Room Rates Intact

The oddest line in the quarter is the hotel math. Disney sold rooms at up to 30% off, and up to 40% off for passholders, and average daily room rates still rose 2%, with occupied nights up 2%. Empty rooms earn zero. A coupon that fills a moderate resort on a Wednesday can raise occupancy without wrecking the blended rate, especially when deluxe villas and cruise cabins are in the same bucket.

List prices for 2027 are already moving the other way. One-day Magic Kingdom tickets have been shown as high as $219. Johnston’s longer view, from a May conference, is that over any three- or four-year stretch Disney still wants both attendance growth and pricing growth, and that new lands are how you get more bodies without jamming the old berm. Tropical Americas and Monstropolis are aimed at 2027. Villains Land and Piston Peak sit further out at Magic Kingdom.

Forward bookings at Walt Disney World, the company said in August, remained strong, and it expected another quarter of global guest growth in fiscal Q4 once a 53rd week is stripped out. Asia parks were the remaining soft spot. Halloween, Advan noted, is still Universal Hollywood’s big month, with October visits there running 50% above the July and August average. Disney already collected its summer bounce the unglamorous way, one discounted hotel night at a time.

Numbers get particular attention here. A percentage in a business story is recomputed from the underlying figures before it goes live, a benchmark in a technology or gaming review is quoted with the conditions it was measured under, and a transfer fee or a lap time in the sports and auto pages is traced back to the club, the league or the timing sheet that published it. The same rule covers news, science, entertainment, lifestyle and travel: if a figure cannot be tied to a filing, a dataset, a transcript or a test Harry ran himself, it does not appear.
