EA Closes BioWare 78 Days After the $55 Billion Buyout

EA is closing BioWare and canceling the next Mass Effect 78 days after a $55 billion buyout left $18 billion in debt.

Electronic Arts is closing BioWare and ending early work on the next Mass Effect game, 78 days after a $55 billion take-private. About 50 remaining BioWare staff are among roughly 400 jobs being cut, about 3 percent of the company.

The cut lands on a studio EA had already reduced to a small Mass Effect team after Dragon Age: The Veilguard missed its player target by nearly half.

A 50-Person Mass Effect Team Was the Whole Studio

President and Chief Operating Officer David Tinson and President and Chief Studios Officer Cam Weber told employees that EA had spent months taking a hard look at the business. Their letter to staff on October 21 said a small BioWare team had been in early development on Mass Effect, and that EA would not move forward, which meant closing the studio and the Edmonton workspace.

A person familiar with the plans said about 400 jobs are going, about 3 percent of EA, including about 50 at BioWare. That math leaves about 350 cuts in other groups. BioWare, by then, was the Mass Effect team.

The studio posted its own farewell the same day, listing the games that built the name and then stopping the next one.

Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending. There is nothing easy about writing those words. Our focus right now is on our incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games, and supporting one another through this transition.

BioWare, official statement, October 21, 2026

The post is the last thing the @bioware account put on the record as a living studio.

Weber and Tinson called BioWare a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and said they do not take the decision lightly. They also said EA will help affected staff look for other jobs inside the company, and that a Global Town Hall in November will cover the new direction.

The $18 Billion Bill Arrived in October

On August 4, 2026, EA completed its sale to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners. Stockholders received $210 in cash for each share, and the common stock left Nasdaq. Andrew Wilson stayed chairman and chief executive.

The buyers funded the deal with about $36 billion of equity, including PIF rolling a stake it already held at 9.9 percent, and a debt raise committed by JPMorgan. The financing included an $18 billion debt package at close, drawn from a $20 billion commitment.

THE TAKE-PRIVATE THAT CAME DUE

  • The price: About $55 billion, with $210 a share in cash, closed on August 4, 2026.
  • The debt: $20 billion committed, with $18 billion expected to fund at close.
  • The cut target: EA told debt investors it would take out $700 million a year, including $170 million in organizational efficiencies.
  • The clock: October 21 is 78 days after the close.

A 50-person original-IP team in early preproduction does not service that kind of paper. Sports, live shooters, and licensed action games do. The memo never names the buyout. The calendar does.

Veilguard Missed by Half, Then the Studio Shrunk

Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched on October 31, 2024. EA later said the game engaged about 1.5 million players in the quarter through December 31, 2024, down nearly 50 percent from the company’s expectations. Wilson said it had a high-quality launch and did not reach a broad enough audience.

He also said games in that category now need shared-world features and deeper engagement beside strong stories. Veilguard had been pulled back toward single-player after an earlier live-service push. It still missed the number EA had budgeted.

By February 2025, BioWare was down to fewer than 100 people, from more than 200 two years earlier. Staff who had shipped Veilguard were moved to other EA teams or cut. The remaining core, including Mass Effect trilogy veterans, was told to focus on the next Mass Effect game, a project first discussed in 2020.

HOW BIOWARE SHRANK TO A HUSK

  1. October 31, 2024: Dragon Age: The Veilguard launches.
  2. January 2025: EA says the game reached about 1.5 million players in the quarter, down nearly 50 percent from its target.
  3. February 2025: Headcount falls below 100, with the studio pointed at Mass Effect only.
  4. November 7, 2025: Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble tells players the next game is in development and that EA and BioWare remain committed to the universe.
  5. August 4, 2026: The $55 billion take-private closes.
  6. October 21, 2026: EA ends that Mass Effect work and closes BioWare.

Anthem, the live shooter BioWare shipped in 2019, had already been shut down in 2025. The farewell list still names it, next to Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect.

Some players will keep pinning the death on Veilguard’s tone. The company’s own sequence is a missed player target, a collapse in headcount, then a debt-loaded owner that stopped funding original RPG work. Those can all be true at once. Only the last one explains why the lights went out in October, not in February 2025.

What EA Is Funding Instead

Sports, Apex Legends, Battlefield, a Marvel Iron Man game, and the next Star Wars Jedi title still have money. A Sims project called Project Lotus is paused so another Sims project, Project Evergreen, can take more time. The free skate. game continues with a smaller team. Fight Night is in pre-production. An American football project called Project Gridiron is in development as a social, open-world game.

WHO KEPT A BUDGET, WHO DID NOT

Project Studio or group October 21 decision
Next Mass Effect BioWare, Edmonton Ended; studio closed
Project Lotus (The Sims) Lifestyle / Maxis Paused
Project Evergreen (The Sims) Lifestyle / Maxis Prioritized
skate. Full Circle Continues with a smaller team
Marvel’s Iron Man Motive Continues
Next Star Wars Jedi Respawn Continues
Battlefield Shooter group Continues; Battlefield 6 called a success
Apex Legends Shooter group Heavy investment, new modes
Respawn and DICE collab Respawn, DICE Unnamed future shooter
Project Gridiron EA Sports In development
Fight Night EA Sports Pre-production

Weber and Tinson wrote that action-adventure is a high-stakes genre where every game needs EA’s full weight, so the slate shrinks to Iron Man and Jedi for now. They called Battlefield 6 a great success and said Respawn and DICE will work together on a future shooter they did not name. Apex, they said, will get new multiplayer modes over the next few years.

The three priorities in the same letter are deepen the core franchises, reach new platforms and markets, and build new sports products. Mass Effect did not make that list. BioWare’s last job was a single-player RPG in early development. That is the opposite of an annual sports cycle or a live shooter that can be tuned after launch.

From $775 Million to an Edmonton Lights-Out

Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip founded BioWare in Edmonton in 1995. EA bought BioWare and Pandemic Studios in 2007 for $775 million, before Mass Effect and Dragon Age had become the company’s public face. The studio is 31 years old in the year it closes.

Under EA it shipped the Mass Effect trilogy, Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II, Inquisition, and later Andromeda, Anthem, and Veilguard. Knights of the Old Republic, made with LucasArts, is still the Star Wars RPG a lot of players name first. EA is keeping Star Wars as a licensed action line at Respawn. It is not keeping the Canadian RPG studio that once made the other kind of Star Wars game.

The decline did not start with the buyout. Andromeda and Anthem burned years. Veilguard took a long, redirected path after EA pushed live-service features, then pulled them. Veterans left. By the time Gamble wrote on N7 Day 2025 that the team was heads-down on Mass Effect, with romances still to figure out, the building was already a remnant.

The next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe.

Mike Gamble, executive producer, Mass Effect, N7 Day post, November 7, 2025

Eleven months later the same company ended that work. Gamble also said BioWare had been partnering with Amazon on a Mass Effect TV series, with a writers room underway, set after the original trilogy and not a retread of Commander Shepard. EA’s October letter does not mention the show.

Mass Effect Has No Studio Left to Make It

EA still owns Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and the rest of BioWare’s catalog. Ownership did not move with the Edmonton keys. What moved is the last group of people on payroll assigned to make a BioWare game.

Mark Darrah, who was an executive producer at BioWare from 1997 to 2021, said that fact cuts two ways. With nobody inside EA making those games, the company may be more willing to sell the IPs. It may also be more willing to leave them in a vault.

Now, there’s nobody working on a BioWare game, or games, within the EA organization, and chances are there never will be, which might make them more likely to sell off those IPs. But it might also make them more likely to just try to forget that they ever existed and bury them in the vault.

Mark Darrah, former BioWare executive producer, on YouTube, October 21, 2026

He said EA still looks to be in cost-control mode, and that a shift toward selling dormant IPs would be a later, revenue-minded phase if it comes at all.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The IPs: EA owns Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Jade Empire outright; the closure does not transfer them.
  • The game: Early development on the next Mass Effect project has ended, per both EA and BioWare.
  • The rooms: The Edmonton workspace is closing with the studio.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • A sale: No buyer, process, or asking price has been announced for Mass Effect or Dragon Age.
  • Another EA studio: The October letter does not assign either series to Motive, Respawn, or anyone else.
  • The Amazon series: Its status after the studio closure has not been updated since Gamble’s November 7, 2025 note.

The BioWare a lot of players are mourning already left in pieces, through Anthem, the Veilguard miss, and the 2025 shrink. What EA ended on October 21 is the last legal shell and the last Mass Effect team it was willing to pay for, 78 days into life as a private company carrying $18 billion of new debt. The IPs are still on the books. No one at EA is making them.

Numbers get particular attention here. A percentage in a business story is recomputed from the underlying figures before it goes live, a benchmark in a technology or gaming review is quoted with the conditions it was measured under, and a transfer fee or a lap time in the sports and auto pages is traced back to the club, the league or the timing sheet that published it. The same rule covers news, science, entertainment, lifestyle and travel: if a figure cannot be tied to a filing, a dataset, a transcript or a test Harry ran himself, it does not appear.
