Jalen Duren Takes the $200 Million He Already Rejected
Jalen Duren signed the Pistons’ standing $200 million offer on Oct. 1, hours before a qualifying-offer deadline that paid less.
Jalen Duren agreed Oct. 1 to a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract with the Detroit Pistons. Agent Chafie Fields of THE TEAM said the All-NBA center is staying after sitting out media day and the first practices of camp.
The number on the paper was the standing offer he had already turned down. He signed it ahead of an 11:59 p.m. ET deadline to take a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer that would have made him unrestricted next summer and, on current cap math, paid him less.
He Took the $200 Million Offer He Already Had
Fields confirmed a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract on Thursday night. A league source said it is a straight five-year deal with no options and no incentives. Detroit had put that $200 million package on the table two weeks earlier, after summer offers that ran from $170 million to $190 million.
Duren, 22, became a restricted free agent on June 30 and was the last player among a widely circulated top-50 free-agent list to agree to terms. He skipped the team’s media day on Sept. 28 and was not in camp when it opened the next day, still weighing the qualifying offer and hoping a sign-and-trade might appear. President of basketball operations Trajan Langdon would not move the Thursday deadline, which the club could have pushed as far as March 1.
He has until Thursday to make a decision, and we will be excited to have him in regardless of what decision he does make. He was a huge reason for our success these last two seasons.
Trajan Langdon, Pistons president of basketball operations, media day
Langdon added that Duren would be a Piston either way and that the front office would control only the welcome, not the choice. The Kings, Bucks, Hawks, and Wizards had been tied to sign-and-trade interest. Detroit refused those talks all summer, and one account had Sacramento going silent since late June.
THE SUMMER THAT DID NOT MOVE THE NUMBER
- June 30, 2026: Hits restricted free agency, eligible for a five-year, $287 million max after All-NBA.
- Sept. 18, 2026: Ausar Thompson agrees to his own five-year deal, and talks with Duren pick back up.
- Mid-September 2026: Detroit places the $200 million fully guaranteed offer that will still be there on Oct. 1.
- Sept. 28, 2026: Duren skips media day. Camp opens without him on Sept. 29.
- Sept. 30, 2026: The verbal weight clause comes off the offer. It had never been written into a document.
- Oct. 1, 2026: He accepts the standing $200 million package before the qualifying-offer clock hits 11:59 p.m. ET.
Last fall the club had offered him about $20 million a year on a rookie-scale extension. The new average is $40 million. That raise is real. The last two weeks were not a new bid. They were a deadline.
The Qualifying Offer Would Have Paid Him Less
The walk-away that was supposed to create leverage did not beat the offer on the table. Cap projections for 2027-28 put a four-year max from another team, stacked on the $9.6 million qualifying offer, at $198.8 million over the same five seasons. Detroit’s deal is $200 million. The gap is $1.2 million, and the Pistons money is guaranteed now.
No player who has made an All-NBA or All-Star team has signed a qualifying offer. Duren would have been the first. He also would have held a de facto no-trade clause for 2026-27, then hit the market in 2027 as an unrestricted free agent. Injury, another thin postseason, or a cap that comes in light would have sat on that bet.
PROJECTED FIVE-YEAR HAUL
| Season | Pistons 5-year deal | QO then 4-year max |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-27 | $34,482,759 | $9,615,393 |
| 2027-28 | $37,241,379 | $44,000,000 |
| 2028-29 | $40,000,000 | $46,200,000 |
| 2029-30 | $42,758,621 | $48,400,000 |
| 2030-31 | $45,517,241 | $50,600,000 |
| Total | $200,000,000 | $198,815,393 |
Those figures assume Detroit starts him at about $34.5 million and works up, and they assume a $176 million cap in 2027-28 for the outside max. A higher cap next year could have closed the $1.2 million hole. A lower one would have widened it. He chose the money that was already signed in ink.
Letting the deadline pass without either document was worse. He would have remained a restricted free agent with no qualifying offer as a fallback, able to play this season only if Detroit signed him or moved him by the Oct. 19 sign-and-trade cutoff. Rival executives and other agents called the $200 million choice the sensible one, and the math is why.
Playoff Scoring Fell From 19.5 to 10.2
The regular season is why he opened at a max. The postseason is why Detroit stopped at $200 million. In 70 games he averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds a night in 28.2 minutes, shot 65.0% from the field and 74.7% from the line, and posted a 68.8 true-shooting mark with 41 double-doubles. He made his first All-Star team. A 100-voter panel put him on the All-NBA Third Team in May with Tyrese Maxey, Jamal Murray, Jalen Johnson, and Chet Holmgren, which is what opened the $287 million max instead of a 25% deal.
Detroit won 60 games, took the Central Division for the first time since 2008, and earned the East’s No. 1 seed. Cade Cunningham made All-NBA First Team on the same ballot as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokić, Victor Wembanyama, and Luka Dončić. The supporting center on that ticket then went 14 playoff games at 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds on 51.4% shooting.
REGULAR SEASON AND PLAYOFFS, 2025-26
| Split | G | MPG | PPG | RPG | FG% | FT% | TS% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular season | 70 | 28.2 | 19.5 | 10.5 | 65.0 | 74.7 | 68.8 |
| Playoffs | 14 | 30.1 | 10.2 | 8.5 | 51.4 | 67.4 | 55.3 |
That is a 9.3-point drop in slightly more minutes. He scored 143 points on 56-for-109 shooting across those 14 starts. The Pistons needed seven games to get past eighth-seeded Orlando, then lost Game 7 of the East semifinals to Cleveland at home. In that last game he had 7 points and 9 rebounds in 25 minutes, 48 seconds in a 125-94 defeat.
The year before, in a six-game first-round exit against New York, he had averaged 11.8 points and 10.7 rebounds. The 2026 tape is what a front office can point to when a 22-year-old asks for $287 million. Detroit still would not shop him. It also would not pay the max.
Ausar Thompson’s Extension Became the Respect Fight
Money was only part of the grievance. His representatives said he felt disrespected by the process, especially next to how the club handled Thompson, who agreed in mid-September to a five-year, $155 million rookie-scale extension with no options. The team announced that deal while Duren was still unsigned.
Thompson, 23, made All-Defensive First Team, finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting, and led the league at 2.0 steals per game. His new average of $31 million does not start until 2027-28. Duren wanted to be treated like a pillar on that same clock, and he wanted it in writing without a scale on the contract.
WHAT HE PUSHED BACK ON
- The max gap: All-NBA made him eligible for $287 million over five years. Detroit’s last number was $87 million short of that.
- The weight language: A verbal weight clause rode with an earlier version of the $200 million offer. League sources said it was never put on paper and was dropped on Sept. 30. He has played at least 60 games in every season and had not had weight trouble on the file.
- The order of business: Thompson’s extension closed first. Duren’s camp read that sequence as a slight, even though the Thompson money is smaller and delayed a year.
- Sign-and-trade: He spent the summer hoping another team might get involved. Langdon’s office never opened that door.
The final contract is fully guaranteed and carries no weight terms. That is the piece of the fight he won. The dollar figure on Oct. 1 was still the dollar figure from mid-September. Sitting out the first days of camp did not raise it.
Cade Cunningham Still Called Him His Brother
While the front office held the line, the locker room kept the door open. Cunningham, who went through his own rookie-max talks in 2024, stayed in contact all summer. He held a mini-camp in San Diego that most of the roster attended. Duren did not go, and Cunningham said they had already talked it through.
I mean, that’s my brother. You know, on the court, off the court, we went to war together, obviously. But you know, we’ve had dinners together. I’ve met his family. He’s met my family. The negotiation is between front office and his representation, and so they’re gonna figure that out. So the best thing I can do is be there for them to support them, encourage them, not let them get too down whenever it’s such a crazy time for them.
Cade Cunningham, Pistons guard, Sept. 28 media day
Coach J.B. Bickerstaff said he had kept telling Duren how he felt, and that the noise around the talks did not change the job. “I love JD,” Bickerstaff said. “I know how JD feels about me, how he feels about being a member of the Pistons, it’s positive. I know there’s a lot of things out there being said, but he’s a huge part of what we do.”
Paul Reed ran with the first group in the early practices. Bickerstaff called him the hardest-working player he has been around. That was the contingency if the qualifying-offer night had gone the other way. It is also the rotation Duren is about to walk back into, several days behind a 60-win team that did not add a new star this summer and lost Tobias Harris in free agency.
The Pistons Kept Their Center Through 2031
Detroit now has Cunningham, Thompson, and Duren under long-term deals, with Duren’s running through 2030-31. The club had about $46 million of room under the luxury-tax line before counting his new cap hit, which gives Langdon some choice in how the $200 million is dated. John Collins is in on a three-year, $51 million contract, and Isaiah Joe arrived from Oklahoma City for shooting. Isaiah Stewart was traded to Memphis.
The 6-foot-10 center, listed at 250 pounds, was the 13th pick in 2022, taken by Charlotte out of Memphis and moved to Detroit on draft night. Across his first three seasons he averaged 11.5 points and 10.2 rebounds in 206 games. Year four is the one that got him paid, and the one that got him a ceiling.
He can be traded as of Jan. 15, which opens a short window before the Feb. 11 deadline. Signing the long deal means he has no veto if that call ever comes. The Pistons host the Phoenix Suns in their first preseason game on Monday. Camp has already started without him. The contract that ends the holdout is the one that was waiting when he sat down.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the NBA Deadline for a Restricted Free Agent Qualifying Offer?
Oct. 1 is the last day a restricted free agent can sign the one-year qualifying offer, unless the team postpones that date. Clubs may push the deadline as far as March 1. Langdon said this week he would not do that, which is why Duren had to choose on Thursday night between the $200 million package and the $9.6 million qualifying offer.
How Much Could Jalen Duren Have Made on a Maximum Contract?
All-NBA Third Team made him eligible for a five-year, $287 million max from Detroit, the 30% supermax track. Without that honor his five-year max as a 25% player would have been $239.2 million. The deal he signed sits $87 million below the supermax and $39.2 million below even the 25% max.
When Does Ausar Thompson’s New Pistons Contract Start Paying?
Thompson’s five-year, $155 million extension begins in 2027-28 at about $31 million a year. He still makes $11.12 million this season on the last year of his rookie-scale deal, which is why Detroit could close his paperwork in September without stacking two new star salaries in the same cap year.
Who Drafted Jalen Duren, and How Did He Land in Detroit?
Charlotte selected him 13th overall in the 2022 draft out of Memphis, and the Pistons acquired him in a draft-night trade. He has played all four of his NBA seasons in Detroit, made All-Rookie in 2022-23, and did not reach All-Star or All-NBA until 2025-26.
