Housemarque Slows Saros Without Cutting a Single Bullet
Saros Zenith, free on October 19, slows the whole fight and adds Eclipse Layers after Alinea had the PS5 shooter trailing Returnal in copies and revenue.
Housemarque’s free Zenith update for Saros, live on PS5 as of October 19, slows the whole fight without removing a projectile. Slow Game Speed, auto-fire, and extra modifiers sit next to a New Game+ ladder and a boss rush.
Alinea Analytics still has the game trailing Returnal in copies and revenue, even though the PS5 audience is more than 11 times larger than it was in 2021.
Housemarque Would Not Cut a Single Bullet
Abebe Tinari, Saros: Zenith design lead at Housemarque, put the studio’s old fear on the PlayStation Blog: challenge should come from the attacks, and the attacks should stay spectacular. The pack’s job, he wrote, was replay for people who had already finished Carcosa, and a lower door for people who had not, so more of them could find the “bullet ballet” that made Saros one of 2026’s highest rated action games.
The studio’s way out of that bind is to keep the projectiles but slow them down. Slow Game Speed can drop the pace of the player, hostiles, and every shot in the air. You set how much it slows, and you can fire it by hand or have it kick in when a fight starts. The patterns do not get thinner. You get more time to read a telegraph and pick jump, dash, shield, or parry.
Although we realize our games can look intimidating at first, we didn’t want to compromise the combat system of Saros by reducing the projectiles that put the “bullet” in “bullet ballet”.

That is a branding choice as much as a kindness. A Housemarque screenshot is a wall of neon. Cut the wall and the trailer dies. Slow the clock and the wall still photographs. PlayStation posted the launch trailer with the feature list on October 19.

Creative director Gregory Louden called the drop a surprise and said he was proud the Zenith team got it out “so fast.” The update had been on the calendar since September 3, so the contents were not cooked in a weekend. The refusal inside them is older than that.
522,000 Copies on a Much Larger PS5 Base
Saros launched April 30, 2026, with deluxe access on April 28. Critics liked it. Metacritic sits at 87 from 140 reviews, 94% positive, with no negative notices in that set, while players have it at 7.6 from 1,184 ratings. The commercial curve did not match the notices.
On May 12, Alinea Analytics head of market analysis Rhys Elliott wrote that the game had passed more than 300,000 copies in two weeks and more than $22 million in gross revenue. Almost a third of those copies came in the early-access window. He also wrote that the two-week start suggested the game would struggle to break even against a reported $76 million development budget.
On October 14 he posted a later snapshot: gross revenue about 20% lower than Returnal at the same point after launch.
THE LAUNCH-ALIGNED TALLY
| Metric | Saros | Returnal |
|---|---|---|
| Copies sold | 522,000 | 649,000 |
| Gross revenue | $40.4 million | $50.5 million |
| PS5s in the market at launch | 93 million | about 8 million |
Returnal arrived in April 2021 as an early DualSense showcase when the machine was still new. Saros arrived in a crowded 2026, after Crimson Desert, Resident Evil Requiem, Hades 2 on PS5, and Pragmata, and against a backlog of PlayStation hits the hardcore already owns. Elliott’s point was that the share of that huge base still shopping for a niche first-party shooter is smaller than the raw install figure.
The people who did buy it played. In those first two weeks, daily users peaked at 142,000 on May 2, after 43,000 on the early-access day and 83,000 on full launch. About 40% had logged more than 15 hours, 30% more than 20, and more than 20% had finished, double Returnal’s completion rate at the same stage. About 78% of those Saros players had already played Returnal. The gap is not retention of Housemarque’s old audience. It is everyone else.
The PlayStation Store has been selling the game at $49.69, 29% off the $69.99 list price, in its Player’s Choice sale. Zenith is free on top of that. That is the conversion pitch: a cheaper door, a slower fight, and a reason to boot the disc again.
What Slow Game Speed Changes in Combat
Saros already launched softer than Returnal, with permanent upgrades, mid-run saves, and biome skips. Reviewers argued about whether that went too far. Zenith does not walk those systems back. It adds a second layer of optional crutches that never touch the pattern density Tinari wanted to protect.
Slow Game Speed is the clearest of those crutches because it is honest. The whole loop drops in tempo, including your own movement, so the “ballet” is still a ballet, just at a speed your hands can read. Combined with auto-fire, it also answers a plainer problem than skill: holding a trigger for a long fight is tiring, and some players cannot do it.
THE NEW CONTROL OPTIONS
- Slow Game Speed: The player, hostiles, and projectiles all drop in tempo, by a amount you set, on a manual toggle or automatically when combat starts.
- Weapon Auto-fire: The main weapon, the power weapon, or both can fire while you aim at a hostile; a perfect reload still needs a timed button press.
- High Contrast Display: Arjun and hostiles can take a solid color fill, a colored outline, or both, so the busiest screens are easier to parse.
- Motion Sensor Aiming: The DualSense motion sensor can drive aim and camera, on top of the button remapping the game already had.
Auto-fire is the tell. It takes the hold, which is endurance, and leaves the reload, which is timing. The assist automates the tiring input and keeps the one that still shows skill. That is how Housemarque can say the pack is not removing “opportunities for player skill expression” while still selling a slower, less physically demanding fight.
The same patch drops 20 new Carcosan Modifiers, split as 10 Protections and 10 Trials. Half of them unlock on a first playthrough. Half wait for Eclipse Layers. Protections make Carcosa more forgiving. Tinari’s favorite new one, Corruption Melee Enhancement, spends the Corruption that usually eats your max Integrity and turns it into a heavy melee hit. Trials push the other way. Hostile Regeneration lets large enemies recover after you stun them unless you close and finish with a melee strike.
You can stack those on a first run. Eclipse Layers then make the stack mandatory.
A Crown That Grows With Every Trial
Clear the story and new nodes appear on the Armor Matrix in Passage, the hub. Those nodes open Eclipse Layers, a New Game+ where the rules shift and a modifier threshold has to be met before a run can start. Tinari said it takes multiple Trial modifiers to hit that bar, and that 25 different Trials are on the menu, with some combinations stacking into nastier fights.
The costume change is the scoreboard. In the Layers, Arjun wears a crown and his armor goes gold. The more Trials you take, and the higher your modifier balance, the larger and brighter the crown gets. It is not only vanity. Twelve Visions, murals and messages an ancient king cut into stone, sit out in the world, and higher crown levels are required to read the extra story text on them.
That is a very Housemarque joke. The thing that proves you made the game harder is also the key to the lore the first ending left hanging. People who already live in Carcosa get a reason to go back with worse rules. People who bounced off the launch build can turn Protections on, drop the clock, and still see the same planet.
Modifier Mastery is the grind around that loop. Dispatch hostiles with a modifier equipped and it gains mastery until the game marks it mastered. The studio is asking you to sample the new kit, not park on one Protection and call it done.
Overlord Rush Packs Eight Bosses Into a Snack
The other half of the pack is arcade muscle memory. Overlord Rush, started at the Primary Unit in Passage, is a training sim that strings the story’s Overlords together and posts scores to a global board. Tinari framed the short sets as a “Saros snack.” For a $69.99 bullet-hell that asked for long runs, ten minutes is a different product.
THE THREE RUSH SETS
- Incursion: Three Overlords, built to finish in 10 minutes.
- Ascension: Three different Overlords, also built as a 10-minute run.
- Totality: All eight Overlords from around Carcosa in one continuous gauntlet.
Boards can be filtered by main weapon, which lets a specialist chase a lane even if the overall list is out of reach. Tinari joked that he expected to fall out of the top 10 in hours, or minutes. The mode needs a PlayStation account and a live connection, which is the one part of Zenith that is not a solo toy.
It is also the most old-Housemarque thing in the patch. Resogun and the studio’s arcade years were built on short, brutal scores. Returnal’s Tower of Sisyphus did the endless version of that in 2022. Overlord Rush is the same impulse cut to a lunch break, which is what you ship when the full campaign did not pull casual PlayStation owners in at the rate the reviews implied.
Returnal Got Its Tower Almost a Year Later
Housemarque has done this dance. Returnal launched April 30, 2021. The Ascension update, with co-op and the Tower of Sisyphus, arrived March 22, 2022, about 11 months later. Zenith landed nearly six months after Saros, and it is heavier on optional ease than on a new place to climb. The studio already knew, from Returnal, that a lot of buyers never saw the ending. Saros doubled that completion rate and still sold behind.
THE PATH TO THE PACK
- April 30, 2026: Saros launches on PS5, with deluxe access two days earlier.
- May 12, 2026: Alinea publishes the two-week snapshot and the break-even warning.
- September 3, 2026: Sony and Housemarque announce the Zenith update for later in the year.
- October 14, 2026: Elliott posts the launch-aligned 20% revenue gap versus Returnal.
- October 19, 2026: Patch 02.000.000 goes live for every owner at no extra charge.
The September announce kills any neat story that the Oct 14 figures caused Slow Game Speed. The figures still describe the room the pack walks into. A high critic score, a Returnal-shaped audience, and a $49.69 sale are what you have when the 93 million did not show up. Louden’s line that there has “never been a better time to return or experience” the game is the honest marketing version of the same math.
Saros on PlayStation 5 is still the full fight, still the same density of shots, still a planet that wants you close enough to melee a regenerating hostile. Zenith just lets you buy thinking time, park a finger, and chase a gold crown if you already cleared it. Totality is all eight Overlords in one run, and every projectile is still in the air.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Saros Zenith Update Free?
Yes. Patch 02.000.000 is a free download for anyone who already owns the PS5 game. Overlord Rush leaderboards are the exception in spirit: they need a PlayStation account and an internet connection, which Tinari flagged in a footnote on the PlayStation Blog.
How Many New Trophies Does Zenith Add?
Six. They unlock through Overlord Rush, Eclipse Layers, and some of the new Carcosan Modifiers, so the trophy list now tracks the pack’s arcade mode and the New Game+ ladder rather than only the original campaign.
When Does Arjun Get the Golden Crown?
The crown and golden armor appear after you enter Eclipse Layer 2. The crown then grows with your modifier balance, and higher crown levels are what let you read the extra story text on the 12 Visions scattered through Carcosa.
What Photo Mode Options Did Zenith Add?
You can change Arjun’s facial expression and toggle power-weapon visuals on his body. Tinari said he wants to see crown-equipped photo mode shots, which is the cosmetic half of the same show-off system as the growing crown.
Did Zenith Change Loot and Artifacts?
Yes. The patch raises the max artifact tier, gives locked yellow containers a chance to drop higher-tier artifacts, retunes how much Growth those artifacts grant, and adds new Artifact Corruption effects. It also retunes costs and damage on several older Protection and Trial modifiers, including Second Chance Overlord and Damage Enhancement.
Can You Filter Overlord Rush Scores by Weapon?
Yes. Global boards can be filtered by main weapon, so a specialist can chase a weapon-specific rank even if the overall top 10 stays out of reach. Incursion and Ascension stay the 10-minute sets; Totality remains the full eight-Overlord gauntlet.
