Tesla Restages Its 2017 Roadster, This Time With Rockets
Tesla’s flying Roadster reuses the 2017 $50,000 deposit play, cuts range in half, and still has no price, with production penciled in for 2028.
Tesla hopped a rocket-assisted Roadster over its own lineup at SpaceX’s McGregor, Texas, test site on October 15, 2026, and said production starts in 2028. The flying trim is invite-only. The deposit is the same $50,000 Tesla took in 2017, and there is still no price.
The stunt looked new. The commercial terms did not. Tesla restaged the 2017 Kickstarter, then bolted on SpaceX hardware to fill a nearly nine-year hole in the spec sheet.
Thursday Night at a Texas Rocket Range
The white wedge climbed an inverted ramp on suction fans, left the ramp upside down, and rolled upright on cold-gas thrusters before it settled in a cloud of vapor. Later it jumped a row of Tesla products, including a Semi, and landed after a mid-air flip that vehicle engineering chief Lars Moravy nicknamed the kickflip.
Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive, told the crowd it was what you get when the car company and the rocket company work together, and that people had to watch in person to prove the clip was not AI. He also said the demo car was driving itself so Tesla would not kill anyone.
Let’s take it to the limits, and way past the limits.
Elon Musk, Tesla chief executive, McGregor event, October 15, 2026
He called the two-seater the only manually driven car Tesla will make in the long run, then warned it is not a safety-first machine. The fun meter, he said, goes to 11 out of 10, right up to the point where you do not detach the retina of the person inside. A live sprint at the site was timed at 0.81 seconds to 60 mph, a figure Tesla did not assign to a trim and that no independent timer has confirmed.
Nearly Nine Years On, the Spec Sheet Is Smaller
Tesla first rolled a Roadster prototype onto a stage on November 16, 2017, at SpaceX’s Hawthorne, California, headquarters, as a surprise at the Semi event. Musk promised the fastest production car ever made, a 2+2 cabin, a 620-mile range, a 1.9-second run to 60 mph, a top speed above 250 mph, and production in 2020. The base car was $200,000. The first 1,000 Founders Series cars were $250,000, paid in full up front.
The 2026 car is quicker on paper in a straight line and much later in the factory. Range is now more than 300 miles. The cabin holds two people, or one on the flying trim. Tesla has not posted a price. Production is 2028, eight years after the first date.
2017 PROMISE VERSUS 2026 PAGE
| Item | November 2017 | October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Range | 620 miles | More than 300 miles |
| 0-60 mph | 1.9 seconds | Under 1.6s, 0.9s, or 0.59s by trim |
| Top speed | Above 250 mph | Above 230 mph on Rocket |
| Seats | 2+2 | Two, or one on Rocket |
| Price | $200,000; $250,000 Founders | Not announced |
| Production | 2020 | 2028 |
| Deposit | $50,000, or $250,000 Founders | $50,000 Performance, $250,000 Thrust |
Tesla took those 2017 prices off its site in 2021. The new page sells a different car under the same name, with SpaceX parts doing the work the old battery pack was supposed to do.
Three Versions, and Only One Is for the Road
The clip that spread overnight is not the car Tesla will sell over the counter. The three Roadster configurations Tesla listed split the hardware, and the hop sits on the version most people cannot order.
HOW TESLA IS SELLING THE THREE ROADSTERS
- Performance: Two seats, road ready, active aero and a multi-mode suction system, 0-60 mph in under 1.6 seconds, open for a reservation.
- Thrust: Two seats, race ready, rear cold-gas thrusters, 0-60 mph in under 0.9 seconds, limited release, $250,000 to hold a place.
- Rocket: One seat, air ready, thrusters around the body for lift, yaw and a short hop, 0-60 mph in under 0.59 seconds, invite only, not in every region.
Tesla’s own footnote is blunt. Rocket is not approved for public road use. Range on all three is more than 300 miles. Rocket’s listed top speed is above 230 mph, below the 250 mph floor from 2017. Treating the McGregor hop as a street car you can reserve skips that note.
Configurations
– Performance: road ready, seats 2
Active aerodynamics & multi-mode suction system for next-level performance on & off the track
– Thrust: race ready, seats 2
Multi-mode suction system paired w/ rear-mounted cold-gas thrusters that enable 0–60 in <1 second

The $50,000 Check Tesla Cashed Twice
Tesla reopened the books in September 2026 on the same cash terms it used in 2017, before it had shown the production body. A Performance hold is a $5,000 card charge plus $45,000 by wire within 10 days. The reservation is not final until the wire clears. Tesla calls the card payment fully refundable. The wire is the real lock.
That $50,000 is the 2017 figure again, not adjusted for nine years of inflation. Thrust asks $250,000, the same round number as the old Founders Series, except this time it buys a place in a limited race trim rather than one of 1,000 numbered cars. Tesla’s reservation agreement says the purchase price, if shown at all, is only an estimate, and that Tesla cannot confirm the exact price or guarantee when a car will be delivered.
THE ROADSTER DEPOSIT CLOCK
- November 2017: Tesla takes $50,000 reservations and $250,000 Founders payments and points to 2020 production.
- 2020: The first build year passes with no customer cars.
- December 2021: Tesla removes the $200,000 and $250,000 prices from its site and closes Founders reservations.
- October 2025: OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman posts that he cannot even reach the old reservation inbox after 7.5 years.
- September 2026: Tesla asks a new group for the same $50,000 before the reveal.
- October 15, 2026: The McGregor demo lands, still with no MSRP.
- 2028: Tesla’s new production year, eight years after the first one.
Altman wrote that he had been excited for the car and that he understood delays. “But 7.5 years has felt like a long time to wait.” Musk later said that refund went through. Other holders have described a slow, messy exit from a queue that never produced a car. In October 2024 Musk thanked those “long-suffering” depositors on an earnings call, then kept the project behind robotaxis and Optimus.
SpaceX Hardware Does What the Tires Cannot
The physics pitch is simple, and Tesla stated it without a brochure flourish. Tires cap how hard a car can launch. Cold-gas thrusters do not. Tesla said the Roadster’s thruster pack makes four to five times the force the tires can put down, which is why a sub-second sprint is even on the table.
SpaceX has used the same class of thruster to nudge spacecraft for decades. Packing that gear into a road car meant filling every spare void with carbon-fiber overwrapped pressure vessels. Event recaps put the flying hardware at 10 nozzles fed by about 600 liters of compressed gas, tanks the car can refill so it does not need a special propellant. Tesla has not posted a fill time on the product page. Engineering interviews after the show put today’s fill at six to seven hours, with a goal of about 30 minutes.
This is not a surprise if you kept the old posts. In June 2018 Musk wrote that a SpaceX option would add ten small rocket thrusters around the car for acceleration, braking and cornering, and that maybe they would even let a Tesla fly. The 2026 demo is that post, filmed. It is also still a 2028 product with no sticker.
Suction fans are the other half. They let the car stick to an inverted ramp and, Tesla says, corner harder than rubber alone. Musk joked that the car could suck the chrome off a trailer hitch. The Performance trim, the one you can actually reserve, gets the fans and the aero and does not get the hop.
What a Nine-Year Spec Sheet Gave Up
Range fell from 620 miles to more than 300 because the tanks and nozzles ate the space a 2+2 cabin and a giant pack used to occupy. Tesla’s page even flags that the posted figures describe the Thrust augment and are an optional upgrade, which is a polite way of saying the road car and the show car are not the same machine.
Yorkville Ives analyst Dan Ives said the night put propulsion, pressure vessels and control hardware from SpaceX onto a Tesla product in a way investors can see, and he still puts an 80% chance on a Tesla-SpaceX combination by the end of 2027. Barclays analyst Dan Levy has told clients a deal could be announced before Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting, which has to happen by December 6, 2026. Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management called the demo a ridiculous display of engineering with no commercial value beyond embarrassing other carmakers.
A merger is a separate question from whether Tesla can build this car. Shared tanks on a sports car do not close a deal. They do show why Tesla keeps holding Roadster events at SpaceX sites, first in Hawthorne in 2017 and now in McGregor.
Model 3 and Model Y Still Pay the Bills
The Roadster will not fix Tesla’s mix. In a report dated October 2, 2026, Tesla said it delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter and produced 464,391. Almost all of that volume is still Model 3 and Model Y.
TESLA’S THIRD QUARTER, IN CARS
- Total delivered: 486,532, down 2.1% from 497,099 in the third quarter of 2025.
- Total produced: 464,391, so Tesla sold 22,141 more cars than it built.
- Model 3 and Model Y: 478,237 deliveries, 457,387 produced.
- Other models: 8,295 delivered, 7,004 produced, down 48% from 15,933 a year earlier.
Year to date Tesla has delivered 1,324,681 vehicles, up 8.8% from 1,217,902 through the first three quarters of 2025. The “other models” bucket is where a Roadster would sit if it existed, next to Cybertruck, Cybercab and Semi. At 8,295 units it is already a rounding error, and the sports car is two years out with no price.
Musk has said the Roadster will not move the revenue needle, and the reservation page is built as if he means it. Tesla will post third-quarter earnings after the close on October 21, 2026. Until then the flying car is a clip, a footnote about public roads, and another $50,000 wire Tesla is happy to take.
