Giant iPhone Duo Sculptures Rise at a Store Short on Phones

Apple unwrapped giant iPhone Duo sculptures at Fifth Avenue and three other flagships, packing New York with demos while walk-in phones stay scarce.

Apple unveiled giant iPhone Duo sculptures at its Fifth Avenue plaza on October 22, a day before the foldable goes on sale. Matching oversized models went up at flagships in London, Mumbai, and Shanghai, with mirrored skins and glowing edges that show the phone in several poses.

The New York store is also due more than 150 demo units. Apple says walk-in stock is limited and will sell out fast.

The Sculptures Come Off at Four Stores

The wraps came off on the evening of October 22, and oversized iPhone Duo models now stand in the open beside the glass cube. Apple is using the same stunt at three other flagships, a rare move for a hardware launch, and the New York set is the one that will be photographed all weekend.

WHERE THE GIANT MODELS STAND

  • New York: Apple Fifth Avenue, on the plaza beside the cube, unwrapped on the evening of October 22.
  • London: Apple Covent Garden, in a market that still has limited walk-in stock.
  • Mumbai: Apple BKC, in a market with no launch-day walk-in sales.
  • Shanghai: Apple Jing’an, also reservation-only, where four models were shown first.

Apple CEO John Ternus posted a photo of the Jing’an plaza with four oversized Duos in mirrored finishes and glowing edges, set in different positions. Apple calls those positions poses, the same word it uses to sell a phone that folds and stands. Two of the four sculpture sites, Mumbai and Shanghai, are in countries where Apple barred walk-in purchases on October 23, so the plaza models are the product most people there will actually see.

Ternus was expected at Fifth Avenue on launch day. He introduced the first foldable iPhone on September 9 and called it the most transformational change to iPhone since the original, a line the plaza is now repeating in metal and light.

Fifth Avenue Packed More Than 150 Demo Units

The outdoor models are the postcard. Inside, Apple reporter Mark Gurman said the company planned more than 150 demo units for Fifth Avenue, against about 20 at a typical store. The flagship is meant to feel like a foldable lab, not a pickup counter.

DEMO UNITS BY STORE

Store Demo units planned
Apple Fifth Avenue, New York More than 150
Apple Park Visitor Center Nearly 100
Michigan Avenue, The Grove, Upper West Side About 30 to 40 each
Typical non-flagship stores About 20

Gurman also described a fixture that opens and closes the phone, plus a MagSafe stand that holds an unfolded Duo next to two regular iPhones so the open sheet sits against a familiar slab. Untethered units along the Avenue tables are meant for StandBy, the clock-and-photo trick that only makes sense if you can pick the thing up and set it down.

Opened, the 7.6-inch inner display is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max and has room for two apps side by side. Closed, the 5.4-inch outer screen keeps 90 percent of the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area in a pocket-size book. That jump is why Apple is putting so many units on tables. A foldable you cannot handle is just a poster, and the plaza already has the posters.

Why Staff Were Told to Warn Walk-Ins

Some Apple Store employees said they had been advised that launch-day purchase stock would likely be gone, and that they should discourage customers without pre-orders from coming in. That guidance was not a public, company-wide notice. On October 21, Apple put its own version on the record.

On Friday morning, our teams look forward to welcoming customers at Apple Stores to experience iPhone Duo and the incredible iPhone line-up for themselves. Apple Stores will have limited iPhone Duo available for walk-in customers, and we’re working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers’ hands as quickly as possible.

Apple, statement on walk-in supply, October 21, 2026

Limited walk-in supply is planned in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, and a run of other European and Asian stores, with some Italian locations and a launch-day-only window in Macao. Apple said it expects Friday’s supply to sell out quickly after pre-order demand it called nothing short of extraordinary. The online store has told customers to check back on Saturday, October 24, for pickup reservations.

MARKETS WITH NO WALK-IN SALES ON OCTOBER 23

  • East Asia: China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.
  • South and Southeast Asia: India and Malaysia.
  • Europe and Gulf: France and the United Arab Emirates.

Buyers in those 10 markets have to reserve an Apple Store pickup slot online. That is how a giant Duo can stand in Mumbai and Shanghai while the store under it has no boxed phone for a stranger who walks in. Apple uses the same reservation trick in some countries to keep crowds down and to make life harder for scalpers. The sculptures do the opposite job. They gather a crowd on purpose.

The Cube Has Staged iPhone Launches Since 2007

Fifth Avenue is the store Apple uses when it wants a product to live on the street. Steve Jobs opened the glass cube in 2006. Apple has treated it as a launch beacon from the first iPhone onward, and the Duo sculptures are the latest object the plaza has been asked to wear.

THE CUBE AS A LAUNCH STAGE

  1. May 19, 2006: Steve Jobs opens the Fifth Avenue store and greets the first customers through the cube.
  2. 2007: The glass cube becomes a focal point for iPhone launches, a role Apple still assigns it.
  3. September 19, 2019: Apple reopens a rebuilt store beneath the cube and says the site has drawn over 57 million visitors, more each year than the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building.
  4. 2024: The cube is lit in Apple Intelligence colors for the iPhone 16 launch.
  5. 2025: Giant Pro and Air models go up at several stores.
  6. September 2026: Fifth Avenue’s cube takes on color for iPhone 18 Pro’s Burgundy and Glacier finishes, the second dress rehearsal in just over a month before the Duo sculptures arrive.

When the rebuilt store opened, Apple nearly doubled the space under the plaza, added 18 mirror-glass Skylenses and 62 skylights, and kept the cube as the only thing a tourist needs to recognize. The Duo models sit in that leftover civic square on purpose. They turn a phone most people cannot buy into something a Fifth Avenue crowd can stand beside.

Pre-Orders Slipped to January in Under 30 Minutes

Pre-orders opened at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on October 16. In less than 30 minutes, Apple’s estimated shipping dates in most countries moved to around January 25. The 256GB model starts at $1,999 in star white or night sky, with grade 5 titanium polished to a mirror finish, the same visual language the plaza sculptures are now shouting. Storage steps run through 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Sales then open in more than 70 countries on October 23, with 28 more on October 30.

Let me cut to the chase: Apple made a major mistake here. The company knew there would be severe supply constraints but went ahead with the launch anyway, apparently prioritizing a desire to get the device on the market early in its fiscal first quarter over satisfying demand. That will disappoint many of the early adopters most eager to buy it.

Mark Gurman, Apple reporter, Power On newsletter, October 18, 2026

Gurman wrote that Apple first planned a United States and China launch, then opened pre-orders in more than 70 countries at once. Apple has not taken up his verdict. It has said demand was nothing short of extraordinary and that it is working to fill orders as fast as it can. The public September launch already listed that wide country set, so the fight is over inventory math, not over whether the phone exists.

A20 Pro, a dual-battery design, and a hinge built to hold a 7.6-inch sheet flat are the reasons that math is ugly. Foldable panels and hinges do not ship like slab iPhones. Apple still chose an October date after, Gurman said, looking at a possible slide into later November. The plaza sculptures are what that choice looks like from the sidewalk: a full launch show, with the boxed product somewhere behind it.

A Night Line Formed for Phones in Short Supply

As of October 21, Fifth Avenue still had no line, even as other stores had already drawn campers. That changed once the sculptures were in the open. By the evening of October 22, about 40 to 50 people were waiting on the plaza for walk-in units, with roughly 14 hours left before sales. A reserved pickup is still the clean ticket. The overnight line is a bet against Apple’s own warning, and against staff who had already been told to send empty-handed visitors home.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The models: Giant iPhone Duo sculptures are unwrapped at Fifth Avenue, Covent Garden, BKC, and Jing’an.
  • The demos: Fifth Avenue is slated for more than 150 units to try, not to take home.
  • The stock: Apple says U.S. walk-in supply is limited and should sell out quickly on October 23.
  • The line: About 40 to 50 people were already waiting on the Fifth Avenue plaza on the evening of October 22.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Boxed count: How many iPhone Duo units Fifth Avenue will actually sell to walk-ins on October 23.
  • The CEO: Whether John Ternus appears at the New York store on launch day.
  • The queue: Whether the Thursday night line leaves with phones or only with photos of the sculptures.

On the plaza after dark, the oversized Duos were already doing the work a sold-out product cannot do. They held the poses. The people in line held their place. Sales open on Friday, October 23, under those same models, in a store built to let you try a phone you may not be allowed to buy.

Numbers get particular attention here. A percentage in a business story is recomputed from the underlying figures before it goes live, a benchmark in a technology or gaming review is quoted with the conditions it was measured under, and a transfer fee or a lap time in the sports and auto pages is traced back to the club, the league or the timing sheet that published it. The same rule covers news, science, entertainment, lifestyle and travel: if a figure cannot be tied to a filing, a dataset, a transcript or a test Harry ran himself, it does not appear.
