Apple Caps the iPhone 18 Pro Max Battery for Shipping
Apple locked the iPhone 18 Pro Max under 20 watt-hours for shipping, then put a 14-day 80 percent cap on repairs and trade-ins.
Apple now ships every iPhone 18 Pro Max with the battery held under 20 watt-hours until you activate the phone. The bigger cell is real. The cap is software, and it comes back whenever you mail the device.
On September 18, 2026, the same day the phone went on sale, Apple published a Prepare to Ship switch in Settings. Use it for a repair or a trade-in and charging can sit at 80 percent for 14 days.
The Factory Cap Lifts When You Hit Activate
Apple’s support note is blunt about the hardware. iPhone 18 Pro Max battery life jumped in part because the cell now sits over 20 watt-hours. Devices with a single-cell battery over that line pick up extra shipping rules in most countries. Apple’s fix limits battery capacity to below 20 Wh from the factory through transport, then drops the limit when you activate the phone.
A boxed, unactivated Pro Max already sits under the line. You do not run Prepare to Ship on a phone that has never been set up. After activation, the full charge is yours, which is why the limit has to go back on before the handset travels again as cargo.
No other iPhone model gets the toggle. Apple says the process exists only to meet shipping rules, and only on this phone.
THE PRO MAX CELL ON PAPER
- 5,391 mAh: Rated capacity on the EU energy label for the SIM-tray iPhone 18 Pro Max, 568 mAh above the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s 4,823 mAh.
- Over 20 Wh: Apple’s own figure that trips the single-cell shipping line.
- 45 hours: Video playback Apple quotes for the Pro Max, 6 more hours than iPhone 17 Pro Max.
- 1,000 cycles: Point at which the EU label says capacity should still be at least 80 percent.
Those hour ratings live on Apple’s US product page as up to 45 hours of video playback and up to 30 hours of typical use. The mAh figure is the EU label, which Apple has to publish there. They describe the same phone from two clocks, not two batteries.
Why a Cell Over 20 Wh Changes Shipping
Air rules treat a single lithium-ion cell and a multi-cell pack as different objects. The US FAA’s 2025-2026 lithium shipping guide, built on ICAO Technical Instructions, draws the line at cells greater than 20 watt-hours and batteries greater than 100 watt-hours.
Go over on a loose cell and the shipment leaves the easy consumer track. Standalone lithium-ion cargo in that class is kept off passenger aircraft, needs a Class 9 hazard label, a shipper’s declaration, UN-spec packaging, and a state of charge at or under 30 percent.
WHERE THE AIR RULES SPLIT
| Line | What it covers | If you go over |
|---|---|---|
| 20 Wh | One lithium-ion cell | Fully regulated Class 9 air rules |
| 100 Wh | A battery made of several cells | The same Class 9 path |
| 30% charge | Standalone lithium-ion cells on cargo aircraft | Higher charge needs extra approvals |
A phone is a cell inside equipment, which is a milder category than a battery shipped on its own. Apple still chose to hold the Pro Max under 20 Wh in transit rather than send every factory carton down the heavier paperwork path.
Repair Desks Now Carry a 14-Day Charge Cap
The factory cap is only the first half. After you activate the phone, any later cargo trip needs Prepare to Ship. Apple lists repair, trade-in, return, or a gift. The path you tap decides how long the cap stays on.
THE TWO PREPARE TO SHIP PATHS
- Repair, trade-in, or return: Charging is capped at 80 percent for 14 days so the phone stays under 20 Wh while it waits to be boxed, and you cannot switch the mode off until those 14 days end.
- Other, including a gift or a private sale: The same drain and charge limit apply, but you can undo shipping preparation at any time.
Start the repair path too early and you live on 80 percent while the phone is still in your pocket. Apple’s own order of operations is to talk to Apple, the carrier, or the reseller first, because some of them have steps that must finish before the toggle. Mail-in service pages now send Pro Max owners to this flow before the usual backup-and-erase list.
In-store handoffs skip the cargo problem. The 14-day lock is a mail-in tax, paid by anyone whose cracked screen or trade-in has to ride a truck.
Other Brands Split the Pack Instead
Nothing in the air rules says a phone must use one cell. The 20 Wh ceiling applies per cell. Split the pack and each piece can stay under the line while the phone as a whole holds far more charge. Large Android flagships have been doing that for years, which is how some of them ship 6,000 mAh and up without a shipping mode in Settings.
Apple kept one cell. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is 8.75 mm thick and 249 grams, and the extra milliamp-hours landed inside that slab instead of in a second pouch. The EU label for the smaller iPhone 18 Pro lists 4,056 mAh, and that model has no Prepare to Ship control. Only the Max crossed the line.
Treating the toggle as proof of a giant battery skips the design choice. Two smaller cells would have kept each one under 20 Wh and left Settings alone. Apple did not take that path, so iOS now has to impersonate a smaller cell every time the handset goes back into the logistics system.
The Phone Runs Warm While It Drains
Prepare to Ship lives at Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone. Unplug the cable first. Apple says that speeds the drain. Then pick Repair, Trade-in, or Return, or pick Other if the phone is going to a person. You may need your Apple Account password. For a return or trade-in you must remove Activation Lock. Erasing is best, Apple says, but not required.
WHAT YOU ACTUALLY TAP
- Unplug the charger: A full battery can take up to a couple of hours to fall under 20 Wh; a low one may take a few minutes.
- Pick the reason: Repair, trade-in, and return lock 80 percent for 14 days; Other does not.
- Wait for Ready to Ship: Settings shows that status with a red badge when the drain and the charge limit are in place.
- Do not box it on a failure: If the ready screen never appears, stop and call Apple or the recipient.
While the cell discharges, the phone can run warmer than usual. Apple calls that expected, and says it cools once the mode finishes. You can keep using the device during the drain unless you erased it, in which case it is a brick until the job ends. On an erased unit the Hello screen’s Info button is the only status light, and it reads Yes next to Ready to Ship when the mode is on.
Cabin Bags Do Not Need the Switch
Apple is careful to separate cargo from a seat pocket. The Pro Max battery is safe, including for shipping and air travel, and Prepare to Ship is not something you enable because you have a flight. The extra rules are for packages, labels, and carrier declarations, not for a phone in a cabin bag.
The battery in iPhone 18 Pro Max is safe, including for shipping and air travel. This process is needed only to meet shipping requirements and isn’t required while traveling or for any other iPhone model.
Apple Support, Prepare your iPhone 18 Pro Max to ship
If Ready to Ship never appears, Apple’s instruction is not to put the phone in a carton, because you will likely need specific packaging. That is the Class 9 kit the firmware was written to avoid. Gift the phone in person and none of this fires. Mail it, and the Settings badge is now part of the box.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Prepare to Ship Work on the iPhone 18 Pro?
No. Apple says the process is not required for any other iPhone model, and the toggle is documented only for iPhone 18 Pro Max. The iPhone 18 Pro’s EU energy label lists 4,056 mAh, which Apple has not described as a cell over 20 watt-hours.
Do You Need Wi-Fi or Cellular to Run It?
Yes. Apple’s “what you need” list is the iPhone 18 Pro Max plus a cellular or Wi-Fi network. If the screen is dead, the company says to contact Apple or the recipient before you try to ship, because the mode lives in software you have to operate.
Can You Undo Prepare to Ship the Same Day?
Only on the Other path, the one Apple gives for sending the phone to a person. After a repair, trade-in, or return selection, the 80 percent cap lasts 14 days. When you are allowed to undo it, the control is under Ready to Ship, then Undo Shipping Preparation, and you can set a new charge limit later in Settings, Battery, Charging.
What If You Erase the iPhone During the Drain?
You cannot use the phone while it discharges. Status moves to the Hello screen, where the Info button shows whether Ready to Ship is on. Leave the unit on a network until that line reads Yes, then pack it. A wiped Pro Max with no badge is not a legal shortcut around the 20 Wh rule.
Is a Fully Charged Pro Max Legal in a Suitcase?
Apple does not ask you to run Prepare to Ship for travel, and it states the battery is safe for air travel as you carry it. The 20 Wh paperwork is a cargo problem for shippers and carriers. A passenger bag is not the factory carton the firmware was built to clear.
