Amazon Phases Out Fire Tablets for Android Alexa Slates
Amazon is killing Fire tablets and putting Google Play on new Alexa slates, reversing a 15-year closed software bet.
Amazon will phase out Fire tablets and sell Alexa Tablets that run Android with the Google Play Store, devices chief Panos Panay said on October 8. The Fire line, he said, “wasn’t giving customers what they were asking for.”
After 15 years of a closed store and no native Gmail or YouTube, that request was Google’s apps, better hardware, and fewer lock-screen ads. The new slates still open into Amazon’s own apps. The gate on the front door is Google’s.
Bezos Wanted Profit After You Bought the Tablet
The original Kindle Fire arrived in 2011 on a fork of Android called Fire OS. Amazon pulled Google’s services so a cheap slab would push the Amazon Appstore, Prime Video, Kindle, and ads on the lock screen. Jeff Bezos, then CEO, stated the doctrine when the Kindle Fire HD landed in 2012.
We want to make money when people use our devices, not when they buy our devices.

On Fire hardware, Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, and Google Drive lived in the browser. The official apps were not in the Amazon Appstore. Developers who already shipped for Google Play and Apple had to build a third copy for Fire, and a lot of them skipped it.
Panay, senior vice president of devices, Alexa, and Leo, joined in 2023 after running Microsoft’s Surface hardware. He told his tablet team to throw out the parts bin. “Start from zero, don’t use any components we’ve ever used. Just ask, what is it? What is a great piece of hardware and what is it supposed to do?” On software he was shorter: “Google Play was a necessity, end of story.”
Last August, the Phone Appstore Went Dark
The store that was supposed to make Fire OS a platform had already lost the phone. Amazon discontinued Appstore support on Android phones on August 20, 2025, after freezing new phone submissions on February 20, 2025. Coins, the store’s play money, ended the same day. The company said almost everyone who used the store was already on Fire TV or Fire tablets, so the phone client was extra work.
Fourteen months later the tablets themselves take Play Store. Fire TV still carries the Fire name, which makes the split plain: the living-room stick can stay inside Amazon’s software. A slab people carry next to a Pixel or an iPhone could not.
THE CLOSED-GARDEN TIMELINE
- 2011: Kindle Fire ships on Fire OS, with the Amazon Appstore as the only front door.
- 2012: Bezos says Amazon makes money when people use the devices, not when they buy them.
- 2023: Panay leaves Surface for Amazon devices, Alexa, and Leo.
- February 20, 2025: Developers cannot submit new Appstore apps that target phones.
- August 20, 2025: The Appstore on Android phones stops; Fire TV and Fire tablets keep it.
- October 8, 2026: Amazon unveils Alexa Tablets on Android with Play Store and says Fire tablets will not be refreshed.
The phone store died because it never beat Google on Google’s turf. The tablet line is now walking onto that turf on purpose, because the closed version stopped selling the hardware.
Three Aluminum Slates Replace the Fire Line
Kevin Keith, vice president of devices, said the new lineup pairs aluminum unibody bodies with full Google Play Store access. Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, Amazon Music, Amazon Quick, and Amazon Luna still sit on the home screen. YouTube, Netflix, Gmail, and Google Docs come from Play, which is the gap Fire owners spent years sideloading around.
The 12 Pro ships with Android 16 at API level 36, a MediaTek Dimensity 8400, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3. Amazon says it is nearly three times faster at processing and nine times faster at graphics than any tablet it has shipped. The two smaller models use a MediaTek 8189.
THE ALEXA TABLET LINEUP
| Model | Starting price | Display | Chip and memory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alexa Tablet 8 | $229.99 | 8.7-inch, 329g, 7.95mm | MediaTek 8189, 4GB RAM, 64GB |
| Alexa Tablet 11 | $329.99 | 11-inch, 2.5K, 90Hz, 16:10 | MediaTek 8189, 8GB RAM, 64GB |
| Alexa Tablet 12 Pro | $499.99, or $549.99 with Nanomatte | 12-inch, 2800 x 1840, 120Hz, 3:2, 6.5mm | Dimensity 8400, 8GB RAM, 128GB (up to 16GB) |
Preorders opened on October 8. Units ship on October 14 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and on October 19 in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. Best Buy and Target will carry them. Amazon Kids Tablets in 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes bundle a case and a year of Kids+, and the kids models ship in Japan on October 14.
A 12-Inch Slate With Optional Matte Glass
The 12 Pro is Graphite only, 6.5mm thick, with a 280 PPI panel, quad Dolby Atmos speakers, a 13MP rear camera, and an 8MP front camera. Amazon rates it for 16 hours of video. The $50 Nanomatte option uses Corning glass etched by photolithography at the sub-pixel level, which the company contrasts with sandblasted matte panels that scatter light. Panay called the screen the one non-negotiable. “And the one thing on this product was, let’s go make the perfect screen.”
A USI 2.0 Pro Pen with 4,096 pressure levels, tilt, magnetic docking, and wireless charging is $89.99. The Pro Keyboard magnetically attaches with no Bluetooth pairing and is $149.99. Load a Nanomatte 12 Pro with both and the bill is $789.97 before tax, which is the Surface-shaped kit Panay built without calling it a computer.
The 11 and the 8 Stay Cheaper
The Tablet 11 is the video set: 276 PPI, 90Hz, 16:10, dual Dolby Atmos speakers, 8GB of RAM, and up to 15 hours of video, in Graphite, Amethyst, or Matcha. The Tablet 8 is the one-hand model at 329g and 7.95mm, with Wi-Fi 6, 4GB of RAM, up to 14 hours of video, and colors in Graphite, Rosette, and Teal. An 8-inch Amazon tablet used to win on price against everything. At $229.99 it has to win against other Android slates that already had Play Store, which is a different fight.
Existing Fire Tablets Keep Working
Amazon’s launch post does not mention Fire. Asked about owners already in that world, a spokesperson said the new line does not take anything away from them. “The Alexa Tablets are a new product line built for what’s next, they don’t change anything about the experience Fire tablet owners have today.” Amazon will provide at least four years of support “after the last Fire tablet we sell.” Panay put a simpler line on it: “We won’t leave any customer behind.” He also said there will be no Fire hardware refreshes.
WHAT FIRE OWNERS KEEP
- Apps and media: Purchased apps and content stay available on Fire hardware through the Amazon Appstore.
- Security updates: Amazon will keep issuing them, with a floor of four years after the last Fire tablet it sells.
- No new Fire slates: The brand is being phased out on tablets; the next hardware is Alexa-branded and runs Android.
- Fire TV stays Fire: Living-room sticks and TVs still use the Fire name, so the retirement is a tablet decision, not a company-wide wipe.
The last-sale date is not public, so the four-year clock has not started in a way a buyer can mark on a calendar. People who wanted a $100 video slab with ads will wait through that rundown, then they are shopping in a different aisle.
What Amazon Still Controls on the Home Screen
Alexa+ is built into every tablet, which is the layer Amazon did not hand to Google. Say “Alexa” or tap Ask Alexa and the assistant answers, drives the smart home, and stays on top of whatever app is open. On-Screen Intelligence can read the display, pull hike details off a page, or drop a game schedule into a calendar and flag clashes. It is off by default and needs an opt-in, with a visible marker when Alexa can see the screen. Live sessions drop the wake word so a conversation can run, and a shared-screen mode can follow a recipe or a product clip if you turn that on.
Open Kindle and the slab tries to become a reader. Notifications mute, blue light drops, and Amazon rates the mode at up to 20 hours. Three themes run from warm color to paper tone to grayscale. Notes made with the Pro Pen sync to Kindle Scribe. Panay posted the pitch himself the night of the launch, calling the 3:2 page “rad” and the reading mode the best Amazon has put on a tablet.
The Kindle experience on the new Amazon Alexa Tablets is rad. The 3:2 ratio is perfectly balanced to get more of the page on screen, and when you open a book, magic happens.

That clip sells a ritual. The commercial problem is still the store. A personalized For You feed and a Dynamic Tab keep Prime Video, Kindle, and Amazon Music in the first layer of the interface, which is how Amazon intends to make money now that Play Store owns the catalog. Lock-screen ads were part of why Fire felt cheap. They are the first thing Panay listed among the asks Fire never met.
Panay Closed the Door on an Amazon Laptop
The 12 Pro with a trackpad keyboard is a laptop-shaped object. Panay still said not to expect an Amazon-branded computer or laptop. He did say more hardware is coming through fall 2026. Memory costs, he said, made a premium tablet “quite tricky” to build without trade-offs; Amazon denied that the shortage set the price. “They gave you the full craftsmanship of a product, but are able to keep it at that price point,” he said.
He has talked before about a foldable Kindle sitting in experimental form. He also confirmed Alexa as a hardware brand beyond speakers, after a reporter walked him through Echo, Fire TV, Kindle, Ring, Blink, and Eero. The tablet is the first product line with Alexa in the name. A phone with an Alexa interface has been rumored around him since the Surface Duo years. That is not a notebook, and he shut that door in the same interviews where he buried Fire.
Tablet Demand Already Fell 12.3 Percent
Amazon is raising the average selling price into a category that is shrinking. IDC found that worldwide tablet shipments fell 12.3 percent in the second quarter of 2026, to 33.6 million units, down 5.2 percent from the prior quarter. United States shipments dropped 31.6 percent year over year. IDC said Amazon’s own tablet shipments declined, against a hard comparison with 2025, when brands pulled inventory forward ahead of tariffs. The top five vendors held about 79.8 percent of the market.
THE TABLET MARKET IN Q2 2026
- Global units: 33.6 million shipped, down 12.3 percent from a year earlier.
- United States: Shipments fell 31.6 percent year over year, the weakest major region in IDC’s note.
- Amazon: Shipments declined, and the company is leaving the bargain plastic band it used to own.
- Concentration: Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, Huawei, and Xiaomi held about 79.8 percent of shipments.
The $229.99 8-inch will be judged next to other Android slates that already had Gmail, not next to a discounted Fire HD. That is the cost of Panay’s reset. Bezos wanted a device that paid for itself after you took it home. The new ones ask you to pay for aluminum, a matte panel, and a Google account, then hope Alexa+ and Kindle keep you inside Amazon once the Play Store is open. Fire owners keep their apps for at least four years after the last unit sells. The next tablet Amazon wants them to buy does not say Fire on the badge, and it will not run Fire OS.
