Apple Puts the 2017 Apple TV 4K on Vintage
Apple listed the 2017 Apple TV 4K as vintage, a parts window after tvOS 27 already dropped the box.
Apple now lists the 2017 Apple TV 4K as a vintage product, more than five years after it stopped selling the box. The label does not shut the device off. It starts a parts clock on a streamer that already missed a software cut.
On the company’s expired-warranty page, updated October 9, 2026, the entry reads AppleTV 4K (2017). Vintage means Apple stopped distributing the product for sale more than five years ago and less than seven. Hardware work is still possible if the part is in stock.
Apple Added the 2017 Apple TV 4K to Vintage
Apple’s own rule is a calendar, not a keynote cue. Owners of Apple TV and other hardware may obtain service and parts for at least five years from the last date the company distributed that model for sale. Service can run longer where law requires it, or up to seven years, subject to parts. After that, the product can move to obsolete, and authorized shops lose the right to order parts.
The 2017 4K box crossed the five-year mark in April 2026. Apple put it on the vintage worldwide list in October, a lag the company often shows on other products. The same page still lists older Apple TV units as obsolete, including the first three generations and one early Apple TV HD kit sold with a Siri Remote that lacked the white ring on the Menu button.
THE 2017 4K BOX IN BRIEF
- Model number: Apple identifies the first-generation 4K box as A1842.
- Chip: The unit runs an A10X Fusion processor with 64-bit architecture.
- Service status: It is vintage worldwide, so repairs depend on leftover parts.
- Software ceiling: Major tvOS for this model stops at tvOS 26.
Apple also notes a network of more than 5,000 certified repair locations. Vintage status does not wipe that network out. It does mean a shop can turn you away when the board or power supply is gone from inventory.
tvOS 27 Stops at the 2021 Model
The software door closed first. tvOS 27, released September 14, 2026, installs on the Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) from 2021 and the two 2022 third-generation models. The 2017 4K box and the 2015 Apple TV HD stay on tvOS 26.
That split matters more than the vintage stamp for daily use. A healthy 2017 unit still opens apps, plays 4K HDR, and talks to a home network. It will not pick up the tvOS 27 Podcasts redesign, larger text tools, or the faster Control Center. Charts of the maximum supported tvOS for each Apple TV now peg the 2017 cube at tvOS 26.x and mark 2021 and 2022 boxes as current.
THE 2017 APPLE TV 4K CLOCK
- September 12, 2017: Apple introduces Apple TV 4K with 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10, and the A10X Fusion chip.
- April 20, 2021: Apple stops selling the first 4K model the day the second-generation box arrives.
- April 20, 2026: Five years have passed since the last distribution date, the vintage threshold in Apple’s policy.
- September 14, 2026: tvOS 27 ships without the 2017 4K box or the Apple TV HD.
- October 9, 2026: Apple adds AppleTV 4K (2017) to the vintage worldwide list, 5 years and 172 days after the last sale.
- April 20, 2028: Seven years after the last sale, the point at which Apple’s policy treats a product as obsolete.
Obsolete is not automatic on that 2028 date. Apple sometimes waits to move a name from vintage to obsolete. Once it does, hardware service ends and parts orders stop. The 2017 box is not there yet.
What the 2017 Apple TV 4K Still Streams
On launch day, Apple sold a living-room pitch, not a disposable dongle. Eddy Cue, then senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, put the job in one line.

The same Apple TV 4K starts at $179 for 32GB, or $199 for 64GB, and sat next to a $149 32GB Apple TV (4th generation). Orders opened September 15, 2017. Units shipped September 22. The box was built to output 2160p with Dolby Vision and HDR10, scale HD on a 4K set, and act as a HomeKit hub because it stayed plugged in at home.
Those picture features still work on tvOS 26. Netflix, Prime Video, and the rest of the app set keep running on the last system the hardware can hold. What the 2017 unit cannot add is Thread, the radio later Apple TV 4K models use in a Matter-heavy home. The vintage label does not strip 4K HDR. It also does not restore a home-hub role the newer boxes took.
The Glass Remote and HDMI 2.0a Still Define It
Apple’s spec sheet still reads like a current accessory page until you hit the ports. The first 4K model is a 35 mm by 98 mm by 98 mm black cube that weighs 15 ounces (425 g). Inside is an A10X Fusion chip with 64-bit architecture, the same class of silicon Apple put in iPad Pro that year. Storage is 32GB or 64GB. Wireless is 802.11ac with MIMO, plus Bluetooth 5.0 on the box and Gigabit Ethernet on the back.
Video leaves through HDMI 2.0a. That is enough for 2160p, Dolby Vision, and HDR10. It is not HDMI 2.1, which the 2021 and 2022 boxes use for 4K60 HDR with a wider set of formats. The 2017 Siri Remote is the glass slab with a Lightning port, Bluetooth 4.0, an IR transmitter, and a 124 mm by 38 mm body that weighs 1.59 ounces (45 g). Later remotes moved to a clickpad and, on the newest pack-ins, USB-C.
If you bought in 2017 and never changed the remote, that glass controller is a faster ID than the cube itself. All recent Apple TV 4K units are small and black. The remote and the HDMI version are not.
How to Identify a First-Generation Apple TV 4K
Apple’s identify guide is the clean check, because every current 4K box looks related from the sofa. Match the model number, then confirm the ports.
THE A1842 TELL
- Model A1842: First-generation Apple TV 4K from 2017, 32GB or 64GB, HDMI 2.0a.
- Model A2169: Second-generation 4K from 2021, HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6, Thread, Gigabit Ethernet.
- Model A2737: Third-generation 4K Wi-Fi from 2022, 64GB, HDMI 2.1, no Ethernet and no Thread on Apple’s list.
- Model A2843: Third-generation 4K Wi-Fi plus Ethernet from 2022, 128GB, HDMI 2.1, Thread.
- Model A1625: Apple TV HD from 2015, HDMI 1.4 up to 1080p, the other box left off tvOS 27.
A 2017 unit that still takes tvOS 26 and refuses tvOS 27 is behaving as designed. The identify page also notes the original glass remote as the pack-in for A1842. If a clickpad remote is in the couch cushions, someone swapped it later, or the cube is a newer model.
Parts Stay Possible Through a Seven-Year Window
Vintage is the awkward middle. Apple still talks about hardware service. Authorized providers can still file a parts order. Stock is the limiter, and Apple does not publish a public inventory for a 2017 power board or HDMI port.
WHAT VINTAGE CHANGES FOR OWNERS
- Working boxes: Keep using them. The vintage line does not disable apps, HDMI output, or Ethernet.
- Broken boxes: Book Apple or an authorized shop while parts remain, rather than leaving a dead cube in a drawer.
- Major tvOS: Already done. tvOS 27 will not land on A1842.
- Obsolete step: Policy puts that more than seven years after the last sale, which for this model is 2028, unless Apple delays the move.
The company was discontinued on April 20, 2021, so the seven-year obsolete threshold lands on April 20, 2028. That is a policy date, not a booked calendar event. Apple’s August and September 2026 list updates on iPhone and Mac showed the same pattern: products sit past the birthday, then a support-page edit makes the new status official.
Apple’s service article says the longer you use a product, the better it is for the planet. For a 2017 Apple TV 4K that still sits under a TV, that line is still the practical path. The constraint is a failed power supply or HDMI board after shops can no longer order the part.
Plenty of 2017 Boxes Are Still Plugged In
The first 4K Apple TV had a long run in stores and a longer run in cabinets. It sold from September 2017 until April 2021. Nine years and 27 days after launch, Apple’s paperwork caught up. In the meantime the 2021 model added Wi-Fi 6, HDMI 2.1, and Thread, and the 2022 refresh split into a 64GB Wi-Fi box and a 128GB Ethernet box.
APPLE TV 4K LINE, SIDE BY SIDE
| Model | Introduced | Number | HDMI | Thread | tvOS 27 | Service list |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K (1st gen) | 2017 | A1842 | 2.0a | No | No | Vintage |
| Apple TV 4K (2nd gen) | 2021 | A2169 | 2.1 | Yes | Yes | Not listed |
| Apple TV 4K (3rd gen) Wi-Fi | 2022 | A2737 | 2.1 | No | Yes | Not listed |
| Apple TV 4K (3rd gen) Ethernet | 2022 | A2843 | 2.1 | Yes | Yes | Not listed |
A 32GB 2017 unit can still have room to spare, because apps live in the cloud and the box is not a photo library. People still running one are not waiting on a vintage badge to decide. The upgrade that would move a working A1842 is a feature the 2017 HDMI 2.0a port cannot do, such as a higher refresh output, not a support-page heading.
Apple has a smart-home event scheduled for October 13, 2026, and a new Apple TV is widely expected in that mix. The vintage edit on October 9 fits the five-year clock from April 2021 even if a new box appears. For a 2017 unit that already plays 4K HDR on tvOS 26, Tuesday is optional. For a dead one on a shelf, the parts window is the date that counts, and it is already open.
