Arc Raiders Hits 166,670 as Embark’s Twice-a-Year Bet Lands
Frozen Trail pushed Arc Raiders to 166,670 Steam players, the first test of Embark’s twice-a-year update bet, during a free weekend that ends October 12.
Arc Raiders logged a 166,670 concurrent Steam peak on October 10, the highest count since March. Frozen Trail, Embark Studios’ 2.0 drop, launched October 8 with free play that runs until October 12 at 08:00 UTC.
That spike is the first public reading of a bet Embark made in May, when it swapped monthly content for two large updates a year. It also arrives inside a free weekend, a 50% sale, and Twitch drops, so the chart is not a clean verdict yet.
Steam Hit 166,670 With the Weekend Still Running
Steam’s own counter, as captured on a Steam Dashboard snapshot dated October 11, put 166,670 concurrent players on October 10 at 20:40 UTC. The same page still showed 118,691 people in the game on October 11, with a 24-hour average of 131,072. Those figures are Steam only. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S do not appear in them.
THE OCTOBER 10 SPIKE
- Weekend peak: 166,670 players at once on Steam, recorded October 10 at 20:40 UTC.
- Next-day count: 118,691 still in-game on the October 11 snapshot, 47,979 below that peak.
- All-time high: 481,966 on November 16, 2025, per SteamDB, so this spike is about a third of launch-era traffic.
- September ceiling: a monthly peak of 39,900 on Steam Charts, which Frozen Trail more than quadrupled.
The all-time mark was 481,966, set on November 16, 2025, not even three weeks after the October 30, 2025 launch. From there the slide was orderly and brutal. Steam Charts’ closed months show a game that kept losing a fifth to two-fifths of its average almost every time the calendar flipped.
STEAM CHARTS, APRIL TO SEPTEMBER
| Month | Average players | Monthly peak |
|---|---|---|
| April 2026 | 75,951.7 | 154,498 |
| May 2026 | 61,053.6 | 120,450 |
| June 2026 | 35,914.8 | 68,130 |
| July 2026 | 28,661.6 | 50,024 |
| August 2026 | 23,216.8 | 41,319 |
| September 2026 | 21,256.1 | 39,900 |
April’s 154,498 peak still belonged to the last big content beat, Riven Tides. March had gone as high as 250,148. Frozen Trail’s 166,670 clears every monthly peak after March and sits more than four times September’s 39,900. The monthly Steam concurrent player history is the drought the new number is being asked to reverse.
Free play started with the patch, on October 8 at 09:00 UTC, so there is no update-only window to isolate. Thursday’s servers already held free-weekend guests. Saturday’s 166,670 is the headline. Sunday’s 118,691 is the first hint that the peak was a Saturday crowd, not a new floor.
Embark Bet the Game on Two Updates a Year
On May 13, 2026, executive producer Aleksander Grøndal told players the studio was done with the monthly cycle it had planned at launch. The post is signed in his name. The argument was scope, not boredom: monthly pressure, he wrote, capped how much each drop could change the game.
Over time, we’ve found that the pressure of a monthly cycle limits how impactful these updates can be. You feel it, and we feel it too. Running at that pace isn’t sustainable, or compatible with the bigger ambitions we have for this game.
Aleksander Grøndal, Executive Producer, Embark development update
The replacement was blunt. Embark would ship major updates twice a year, larger, meant to change how people play, while a live-service crew kept shipping balance, bug fixes, store rotation, and events. Frozen Trail, already dated for October, was named as the first of those bigger drops and as the largest since launch.
Grøndal knew the wait would grate. “We understand that this change won’t please everyone, and that it might be frustrating not to get updates as frequently, but we truly believe this will be worth it,” he wrote. From that letter to patch day was 148 days. Players who had treated Arc Raiders as a monthly habit now had a summer of live ops, a new trader, stash tweaks, and no new frontier.
THE BET’S CALENDAR
- May 13, 2026: Embark ends the monthly major-update plan and dates Frozen Trail for October.
- October 8, 2026: Frozen Trail goes live at the same hour free play opens (09:00 UTC).
- October 10, 2026: Steam records 166,670 players at 20:40 UTC.
- October 12, 2026: Free play ends at 08:00 UTC.
- October 13, 2026: A weeklong PvE matchmaking test begins, running through October 20.
That calendar is the wager in motion. The studio asked for a half year of patience, stacked a free weekend and a sale on the delivery date, and booked a PvE experiment for the week after the tourists are supposed to leave.
Frozen Trail Is the Payoff for That Wait
Pendola Pass is the proof of size. Embark’s preview places it past the peaks that wall in the Rust Belt, an old Italian village and Exodus transport hub held in ice, with a supermarket, a dead square, an observatory, a buried train depot, and a fallen Emperor. The Frigate, a UFO-scale ARC ship, is the new operation on that map. Redirection is the other new map condition. Dynamic loot, tested only on Pendola Pass, is supposed to stop the same route paying the same way every raid.
The official account posted the launch as the biggest update yet, with free play attached.

Around that mountain, Embark rebuilt the metagame rather than sprinkling guns on the old loop.
WHAT THE SIX-MONTH DROP CHANGED
- New threats: Bully, Skulker, and Hydra join the roster, with the Hydra tied to the Frigate.
- New home: an Outpost with a Research Bench, plus 100 furniture designs that craft like blueprints.
- New grind: a 60-level Reward Pass that replaces Raider Decks and retires Cred, 22 new quests, and a reworked skill tree with forced binary picks mid-branch.
- New ceiling: stash max raised by two tiers to 328 slots without Expedition bonuses.
New kit: Bantam and Stiletto, Amplified weapons, a Grappling Hook, a Tether Launcher, a Yank Grenade, and Basic and Advanced Cameras.
The Grappling Hook is the toy that leaves the patch notes. It latches onto cliffs and flying ARC, which is why clips of people swinging through a raid started moving again. Embark even carved space for it by shrinking the old Snap Hook, cutting range from 20m to 18m, doubling durability cost from 2% to 4% per use, and raising power cost from 50 to 60, so the two gadgets are no longer a straight upgrade path.
The patch is not a clean ship. Embark published a known-issues list that includes a Hydra firing through walls in the Cargo area, rare invisible lobby spawns, a Tether Launcher that cannot be repaired yet, and a stack of Outpost camera and lighting bugs. “Solo vs. Squads” matchmaking was pulled so the studio can rethink it. Those are the seams of a drop that tried to be an expansion.
Why Returning Players Said They Were Wrong
The May letter did what Grøndal predicted. People who liked the first six months quit when the calendar went to two dates a year, and they said so in public. Frozen Trail’s scale is what they are walking back. Threads from lapsed players have been admitting the wait produced an update large enough that the “these devs fumbled” read no longer holds, even if they do not expect December 2025 traffic to return.
Map size is the specific praise, not a vibe. Players coming off work have been logging an hour and still seeing only a slice of Pendola Pass. The Frigate reads as a boss arena you board, not a skybox prop. Amplified weapons that need parts from special ARC, including the Turbine, give those machines a reason to exist beyond being obstacles. That systems note is quieter than the Spider-Man jokes and more like what a six-month build is for.
The Grappling Hook is still the thing that travels. Swinging a raid like a superhero toy, then sprinting with no stamina drain, is easier to post than a skill-tree node. The new camera feeds the same habit. Arc Raiders already ran on slapstick physics; a button that saves the bit is a social product as much as a photo mode. English posts over the weekend have been clips and “last chance, it’s free,” not a long argument about retention. The retention argument is the chart after October 12.
PvE Gets a One-Week Trial on October 13
The next scheduled test is not another map. Embark will run a PvE matchmaking toggle beta test from October 13 to October 20, one day after free play ends. In PvE sessions, player-to-player damage is zero. Solos, duos, and trios share the same lobby. Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate, and the new Frigate are excluded, because those conditions were built around not knowing who else is on the map.
The studio split its audience in that same post. Friendly co-op players are 37% and have grown since launch. Mixed players are 27%. Pure PvP players are 34% and have been stable. Over 70% of the Friendly group and 40% of the PvP group want fewer hostile encounters, and 51% of the surveyed player base wanted a dedicated PvE option. Loot value is lowered in PvE to pay for the safety. PvPvE gets a slight loot bump during the test so the economy does not drain into the safer queue.
Grøndal did not dress it up as a mode launch. “It’s possible that this will not work. This test is not a promise that there will be a PvE mode in the future,” he wrote, adding that any later version could look different. When the week ends, the toggle comes off. The original pitch for Arc Raiders, seven years back, was a PvE co-op raid game; Embark reset that into the extraction shooter that launched. This trial is the studio circling a choice it already made once.
If a large share of the free-weekend crowd is here for co-op against ARC, October 13 is when that group gets a queue that matches how they already play. If they bounce when other Raiders can shoot them again on October 20, the 166,670 was a tourist number twice over.
October 12 Is the Chart That Counts
Embark did not send Frozen Trail out alone. The game is half-price at $19.99 on Steam, 50% off a $39.99 list price, and the same discount is on the other platforms. Twitch drops run October 8 through November 4, with an Oxygen Respirator at 60 minutes watched and a Mailbox at 120. The Collector Set DLC bundles cosmetics, tokens, and the Premium Reward Pass. The weekend is a funnel with a content drop inside it.
Progress from free play carries into a purchase, and new players can walk onto Pendola Pass immediately if they queue with someone who already unlocked the map. That is a smart on-ramp. It is also why 166,670 cannot be read as the installed base coming home. Some of those accounts will vanish at 08:00 UTC on October 12. Some will buy at $19.99. Some will linger for PvE week and then leave when other players can hurt them again.
The twice-a-year bet still has no second data point. Embark has not named the next major update. If the cadence holds, that drop belongs in 2027. Between now and then the live-service team has events, balance, and whatever Frozen Trail’s known-issues list still owes. The 118,691 still on Steam on October 11, with free play not yet over, is already a step down from Saturday night. The number that settles the wager is the one that remains after the price is $39.99 again and the PvE toggle is gone.
The toggle comes off on October 20, and Embark has not named the next major update.
