Embark’s Slow-Update Bet Gets a 131,388-Player Night

Embark’s first twice-yearly Arc Raiders update hit 131,388 Steam players, but a free weekend and a $29.99 pack shared the night.

ARC Raiders hit 131,388 Steam players at once on October 8, its strongest night since April. Frozen Trail, the first twice-yearly major patch from Embark Studios, landed that morning with a new ice map and a sale stacked under it.

Five months earlier the studio had bet that fewer, larger updates would bring people back. The first night cannot close that bet, because the patch did not walk in alone.

Embark Bet the Drought Would Be Worth It

On May 13, 2026, executive producer Aleksander Grøndal told players the monthly cadence set at launch was over. The plan had been to keep the Rust Belt feeling fresh. Once the game was live, the studio decided that kind of schedule capped how much each patch could change.

Running at that pace isn’t sustainable, or compatible with the bigger ambitions we have for this game.

Aleksander Grøndal, Executive Producer, Embark Studios, May 13 development update

The same note said Embark would ship major updates twice a year, larger in scale, with the stated goal of changing how people play. A live-service team would still handle balance, bugs, store drops, and events. The extra months were also meant for economy work, fair play, and anti-cheat, the unglamorous systems an extraction shooter dies on if they slip.

THE CADENCE BET

  1. October 30, 2025: ARC Raiders launches on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
  2. January 2026: Steam Charts records a monthly average of 241,197 players and a peak of 465,097, the tracker’s all-time high.
  3. April 2026: Riven Tides, the last major content drop under the old rhythm, lands; the month peaks at 154,498.
  4. May 13, 2026: Grøndal publishes the twice-yearly plan and names Frozen Trail as the first of those updates, due in October.
  5. September 2026: the monthly average sits at 21,256, with a peak of 39,900.
  6. October 8, 2026: Frozen Trail 2.0 goes live at 09:00 UTC.

Grøndal signed that May post himself and said he knew the change would annoy people who wanted a new toy every few weeks. He later said the studio accepted a stretch with fewer players when it slowed the calendar, hoping a bigger drop such as Frozen Trail would win them back. Nexon, Embark’s parent, has said the game has surpassed 16 million copies, which is the kind of install base that can survive a quiet summer. Survival is not the same as a packed queue at 8 p.m.

Steam’s 131,388 Peak Still Trails April

Steam is only one platform, so these figures undercount PlayStation and Xbox. They are still the public tape for how hard the PC side fell, and how hard it bounced on patch day.

THE STEAM SLIDE INTO FROZEN TRAIL

Month Average Steam players Peak Steam players
January 2026 241,197 465,097
April 2026 75,952 154,498
May 2026 61,054 120,450
September 2026 21,256 39,900

Steam Charts shows September averaged 21,256 Steam players, down from 61,054 in May, the month of the cadence note. The September peak of 39,900 never crossed six figures. May’s peak of 120,450 was the last time the PC count had cleared 100,000 before Frozen Trail.

October 8’s 131,388 is about 3.3 times that September peak and about 6.2 times the September average. It is also 15% below April’s 154,498, the spike that sat on Riven Tides. If the wager was “bigger updates beat a monthly drip,” the first scoreboard still has April in front, and April did not have Frozen Trail’s trial weekend hanging off the same day.

The all-time Steam Charts high remains 465,097, logged in January. Nobody serious thought Pendola Pass would reprint launch winter. The live question was whether a six-month content gap would leave the game too empty to refill. On the first night, it was not empty.

Pendola Pass Puts Raiders on a Fallen Emperor

Frozen Trail is version 2.0, and Embark billed it as the largest update since launch. The headline destination is Pendola Pass, a frozen Italian mountain village and Exodus transport hub beyond the Rust Belt, built around a fallen Emperor. Flash Freeze storms punish anyone who lingers outside. Extraction runs through a Ballistic Gondola: call it on a transceiver, breach a tube, climb in.

WHAT 2.0 ACTUALLY SHIPPED

  • The map: Pendola Pass joins the six older maps, with two new conditions, Frigate and Redirection.
  • The machines: Bully, Skulker, and Hydra join the roster, while a Frigate patrols as a high-stakes airborne carrier.
  • The guns: Bantam and Stiletto arrive, and Amplified Weapons add a fifth tier with branching upgrades at the new Research Bench.
  • The base: an Outpost project unlocks craftable furniture from 100 Designs, plus stash space that now tops out at 328 slots before Expedition bonuses.
  • The grind: a rebuilt skill tree, 22 new quests, and a 60-level Reward Pass that replaces Raider Decks after Cred is retired.
  • The toys: Grappling Hook, Tether Launcher, cameras, Yank Grenade, Mountaineer’s Detector, plus a Banjo and Harmonica.
  • The fine print: Solo vs. Squads matchmaking is gone while Embark reworks it, and the Anvil moves from Uncommon to Rare.

That list is why the studio asked for half a year. A new map with its own extract, a housing loop, a pass reset, and a skill-tree rebuild are the kind of pile a monthly patch cannot finish without shipping hollow. The 2.0 notes still log a Hydra that can detect and shoot through walls in a cargo area, plus clipping on the new mountain, which is the residue a long cook is supposed to catch and sometimes does not.

Embark’s own first look at the snow, the gondola, and the downed Emperor is the cleanest picture of what the drought was spent on.

A Free Weekend and a $29.99 Pack Rode Along

The patch is free for anyone who already owns the game. The night’s player count is not a pure content test, because Embark opened the door and put a discount in the window at the same time.

THE COMMERCIAL STACK ON OCTOBER 8

  • The trial: ARC Raiders is free to play from October 8 to 12 on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox, with a €0.25 fee on PS5 in Germany, ending at 08:00 UTC on October 12.
  • The sale: the base game is 50% off on every platform; Steam’s cut price is $19.99.
  • The pack: the Frozen Trail Collector Set for $29.99 bundles the Renzo outfit, 2,400 Raider Tokens, the Banjo blueprint, and Premium Reward Pass access.
  • The cheaper pass: Premium on its own costs 1,150 Raider Tokens, so players sitting on currency already have a path that does not require $29.99.

The Collector Set is the paid skin of the season, and Embark pushed it the same afternoon the servers filled.

A trial weekend always inflates concurrent counts with people who will vanish when the clock hits October 12. A half-price sticker does the same with buyers who were waiting for a sale. The $29.99 bundle can juice Steam’s best-seller list without proving anyone will still raid Pendola Pass in November. Those levers are rational. They also muddy the thing Grøndal asked players to judge: whether waiting for a bigger patch was worth the empty months.

Streamer Hours and the Map People Missed

Launch day had full-day broadcasts on the new mountain, including long sessions from large shooter streamers. That kind of schedule puts thousands of viewers into the same Steam chart the studio will be judged on. One of the sharper replies under the first six-figure screenshots was a shrug at the count until those streams ended. That objection is fair, and it is incomplete.

A returning player who said they had 700 hours logged wrote that a month away made Frozen Trail feel like launch day again, and that the map itself was the reason. That is the sentence Embark needed out of the drought: not that a free weekend can spike a chart, which any live-service team already knows, but that people who had finished the old maps found a reason to kit up.

Both things can sit in the same 131,388. Streamer hours and trial accounts are real. So is a vertical snow map with a dead Emperor in it, after a summer of 20,000-player evenings. The useful split is what remains when the broadcasts stop and the trial keys expire. If Pendola Pass is only busy while someone famous is on it, the cadence bet failed in the ordinary way live-service games fail. If squads keep running the gondola on a quiet Tuesday, Grøndal’s summer looks less like neglect and more like a hold.

Did Frozen Trail Prove the Cadence Change?

Not on October 8. April still holds the higher Steam peak at 154,498, and that month’s spike did not share a day with the first free-play window in the game’s life. Frozen Trail is larger than Riven Tides by Embark’s own billing. The first-night tape does not yet show a larger crowd.

What October 8 does show is that the game was not dead in the way a 21,256 September average can look dead. People still had the client installed. They came back when there was a new mountain, a sale, and a weekend pass. The twice-yearly plan was always going to be judged on the week after the fireworks, which is why Grøndal talked about reviewing the next six months rather than the next six hours.

The trial ends at 08:00 UTC on October 12. After that, Pendola Pass has to hold players who paid $19.99 or already owned the game, without a famous stream filling the server browser, on a map that still lists a wall-hacking Hydra in its known issues. That is the first clean reading of the bet Embark made in May.

Numbers get particular attention here. A percentage in a business story is recomputed from the underlying figures before it goes live, a benchmark in a technology or gaming review is quoted with the conditions it was measured under, and a transfer fee or a lap time in the sports and auto pages is traced back to the club, the league or the timing sheet that published it. The same rule covers news, science, entertainment, lifestyle and travel: if a figure cannot be tied to a filing, a dataset, a transcript or a test Harry ran himself, it does not appear.
