Discord’s No-ID Age Gate Was Trained on Forced Checks
Discord’s global age checks skip IDs for more than 90% of users because a social-graph model was trained on people already forced to scan faces and documents.
Discord began sorting every account into adult, teen, or unconfirmed age groups on September 23, 2026, without asking most people for an ID. Co-founder and chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy said more than 90% will not be asked to confirm a Discord age verification result at all. The labels come from account signals the company already holds, not from a new passport scan.
The catch-free pitch still has a price paid earlier. The model learned those labels from people in places where law already required a face scan or a government ID.
The 90% Shortcut Comes From Forced ID Checks
Vishnevskiy delayed a global rollout on February 24, 2026, after users rebelled at a plan that leaned on facial age estimation and ID uploads. He promised more methods, a public vendor list, and a technical write-up before the company expanded. The wait did not kill age checks. It produced a classifier.
Through 2025 and 2026, Discord already ran age assurance in countries that would not accept a homegrown guess. Users there confirmed they were teens (13 to 17) or adults (18 or older) with facial age estimation or an ID scan paired with a selfie. Discord says it never received those images and did not train on them. It used only the age group data itself as the training and evaluation label.
That is the bargain hiding inside the new default. People who had no legal way to skip a scan created the ground truth that now lets everyone else skip one. The company also says the estimation model is not currently available in the United Kingdom or Australia, two of the markets that generated those confirmed labels. Adults there who want age-restricted spaces still go through a vendor.
Brazil’s Digital Statute for Children and Adolescents took effect on March 17, 2026. Texas arrived on a court clock of its own. Vishnevskiy wrote that policymakers from the European Union to Indonesia want stronger teen rules, and that launching a global design with non-biometric options is how Discord gets ahead of laws that might demand something heavier.
He posted the plan on the company’s account the day before the switch.

The Model Reads Your Friends and Game Graph
The classifier is XGBoost, a tree ensemble that stacks corrections on earlier trees. Discord’s most predictive input is not how old the account is. It is a 32-dimensional embedding of how the account sits in the social graph, built with a method the company calls Discord Entity-Relationship Embeddings, or DERE.
DERE encodes who an account is friends with, which servers it joins, and which games it plays. Discord says users of similar ages cluster together, and the model reads that shape. It does not read message text, usernames, bios, or media. It does use counts, including active days in the past month and how many messages an account has sent.
SIGNALS THE AGE MODEL USES
| Feature group | What the model sees | What it leaves out |
|---|---|---|
| User embeddings (DERE) | Structure of friends, servers, and game titles, as a 32-number vector | Usernames, profile text, and any message content |
| Account metadata | Account tenure, subscription history, email and phone verification status | Race, gender, ethnicity, and other demographic attributes |
| Engagement metrics | Counts only: active days, servers owned, messages sent | The words inside those messages or calls |
| Community context | Categories of servers, drawn from server names and descriptions | Any single server, friend, or community as a deciding vote |
| System metadata | Operating system, browser type, and hardware platform | Face scans and government ID images |
A score between 0 and 1 is the probability that an account belongs to an adult. Two confidence thresholds turn that number into a decision. Above the upper line, Discord marks the account adult. Below the lower line, it marks the account teen. Between the lines the account stays unclassified, which still carries extra protections until the person confirms an age group.
Discord designed that uncertain band on purpose. Adults are most of the user base, so many unclassified accounts will belong to adults, and the company would rather leave them gated than guess. Scores are averaged over a longer window so one busy day cannot flip a label. New accounts stay unconfirmed until there is enough history to score.
The company says performance meets or exceeds the vendor methods used in countries that already require age assurance, measured on a held-out set, and that it will re-measure against freshly confirmed ages and retrain when the numbers drift. It has not published a single accuracy rate.
What Changes If Discord Labels You a Teen
Friends, DMs, voice, and ordinary servers stay in place for a teen account. Age-restricted rooms, some safety toggles, and how strangers reach you do not. Vishnevskiy has said that even a teen classification is meant to leave the core product intact, and that nobody is required to hand Discord extra information to keep chatting.
Status lives under User Settings, then Account Status. It is not shown on a public profile or to other members in a server. Adults see no product change. Unconfirmed accounts get the same content locks as teens, with a slightly wider profile visibility rule that the help pages spell out.
THE TEEN PROTECTIONS THAT LOCK ON
- Stranger mail: Messages from people who are not friends land in a message requests inbox, and turning that off requires an adult confirmation.
- Friend alerts: Discord warns before a teen accepts a request from someone with no mutual friends and no small shared server.
- Sensitive media: Images flagged by the company’s sensitive content filters are blurred or blocked, depending on where they appear.
- Adult spaces: Age-restricted servers, channels, and age-restricted bot commands are closed until the account is confirmed adult.
- Profile reach: Full profile details and activity, including the game being played, show to friends and people in smaller servers, with some of those defaults adjustable without an age check.
Communities that used age-gated channels for spoilers or politics, not for adult content, got a separate spoiler-channel tool earlier in 2026 so a whole server does not have to be locked to 18 or older. Regional help pages still override pieces of this package in the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, and Texas.
A 70,000-ID Breach Still Hangs Over Vendors
The February delay was not an abstract privacy debate. In October 2025, Discord said about 70,000 users may have had government ID photos exposed after an unauthorized party hit a third-party customer service provider that handled age-related appeals. The company said the incident was not a breach of Discord itself, and it called larger haul figures circulating at the time incorrect and part of an extortion attempt.
Those appeals were the old manual path: a selfie with a government ID, sent so Trust and Safety could review an age dispute. That is a different stack from k-ID, the vendor now running facial estimation, ID scans, credit-card checks, and AgeKeys. Discord says current vendors were not involved in the September 2025 support-agent incident, that facial estimation must run on the user’s device, and that ID images going to k-ID’s document partner Veratad are deleted after the age comes back.
Skepticism has not moved. A skip-ID score still sorts the whole network, and a card check adds a payment flow that account thieves already know how to abuse. Discord answered the breach question in the same thread as the launch post.
But what about the risk of a data breach? We've made some significant changes here too: https://t.co/Mu4TzNI1j0 pic.twitter.com/oAQ8d7esYv

FROM THE ID BREACH TO THE GLOBAL SWITCH
- September 20, 2025: An unauthorized party compromises a third-party customer service provider Discord used for support and age-related appeals.
- October 2025: Discord says about 70,000 users may have had government ID photos exposed and contacts affected accounts.
- December 9, 2025: Discord applies an age-assurance experience in Australia, even though it was not classed as an age-restricted social media platform there.
- February 24, 2026: After a February 9 teen-safety announcement drew a revolt, Vishnevskiy delays the global rollout to the second half of 2026.
- March 17, 2026: Brazil’s Digital ECA takes effect, after Discord began a local age-assurance rollout earlier that month.
- May 2026: Discord publishes its first age-assurance figures in the 2026 Transparency Report, covering the UK and Australia launches.
- September 23, 2026: Automatic age groups begin rolling out worldwide over several days.
The vendor page now names k-ID as orchestrator, Stripe as the card processor that keeps the last four digits under payment-law duties, and Veratad as the ID-document checker. Contracts, Discord says, bar vendors from ads, profiling, or training their own models on what users submit.
Texas Forced the Tools Discord Built for Britain
The global switch also closes a gap Texas took to court. Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office filed suit on May 22, 2026, and on July 24 secured an agreed temporary injunction against Discord that requires the UK-style age-assurance and default teen settings for every Texas user within 90 days. Discord must file progress reports to the office every 30 days. The underlying case still goes to trial on deceptive-trade claims.
Discord told the court it has 200 million monthly active users and could not say how many are in the United States, how many are teenagers, or how many adults pose as teens. In 2025 it submitted 489,782 reports of suspected child sexual exploitation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. A Texas investigator who opened an account as a 13-year-old girl was solicited for explicit sexual acts within 30 seconds, the office said.
Parents testified across two hearing days. One described abuse of her child by Charles Maitski, now serving a life sentence in federal prison, and said a default setting “so simple” might have stopped it. Another had emailed Discord in July 2025 to delete her 11-year-old son’s account; ten months later an assistant attorney general logged into that still-active account in the courtroom. New Jersey had already sued, and Nevada, Indiana, and Arkansas have sued as well.
Discord built a platform where adult predators could hunt Texas children, then looked parents in the eye and told them it was safe.
Ken Paxton, Attorney General of Texas, July 24, 2026 injunction announcement
The order does not invent a new check. It turns on the system Discord already runs in Britain: automatic placement for most people, on-device face estimation when a scan is used, and ID images that go to a vendor and are deleted after the age comes back. Paxton’s framing is that Britain got a deadline and Texas got a promise that slipped. A court order, he noted, cannot be taken back.
Adults in the Wrong Bucket Get New Exits
February’s menu was a video selfie or an ID. The September menu is longer, and what you see still depends on region and device. Discord never handles the documents. Vendors pass back an age signal, and Discord stores the resulting group on the account.
HOW AN ADULT CAN CONFIRM AN AGE GROUP
| Method | What Discord receives | Who touches the raw data |
|---|---|---|
| Account signals (automatic) | A teen, adult, or unconfirmed label | Discord’s own model, on data it already stores |
| Credit card | Adult or inconclusive | k-ID routes the card to Stripe; a charge under $0.50 USD may post and is refunded within 14 business days. Debit and prepaid cards are rejected because minors can hold them. |
| Apple App Store | An age group, not a birthdate | Apple, after you choose to share your age range with Discord |
| Google Play Store | An age group, not a birthdate | Google Play, after you approve the share |
| Google Wallet | Age group and issuing country | Google Wallet, for passports from Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK, and the United States |
| Video selfie | An estimated age | On-device facial estimation through k-ID; the clip never leaves the phone |
| ID scan plus selfie | An age | k-ID and Veratad; images deleted after confirmation |
| AgeKey | Pass or fail that you are an adult | A device passkey that is double-blind, so Discord and k-ID cannot see where it was minted or reused |
Discord has said the more-than-90% figure mixes two populations: accounts the model can place on its own, and accounts whose activity never requires a placement because they do not touch age-restricted spaces or locked safety settings. The remainder can stay unconfirmed forever and keep friends, servers, DMs, and voice. They simply cannot open adult rooms or flip certain teen defaults.
A leftover manual review still exists in narrow cases, offered through an official Discord DM or a minimum-age appeal card, not as a button anyone can tap. That is the path that used to run through customer-service vendors. Discord’s public line now is that k-ID handles it when it happens at all.
Vishnevskiy Wants the Next Wave of Laws to Copy This Model
The product argument is that a graph score is kinder than a national ID wall. The political argument is that if Discord does not ship its own version, a legislature will ship a worse one. Vishnevskiy has been saying some form of that since February, when he called the design a model he hoped the rest of the world would adopt.
A skip-ID classifier still puts every account in an age bucket. Once that bucket exists, a later statute can demand a tighter threshold, a smaller unclassified band, or an ID for the slice that remains. The 70,000-photo leak is the reason users treat vendor promises as provisional. The Texas record is the reason child-safety offices treat Discord’s timelines as provisional too.
We’ll get some things wrong, but you can judge us on how we respond: how accurate the age group estimation gets, how fast we fix bad calls, and whether we keep publishing the data so you don’t have to take my word for it. That’s how we earn your trust.
Stanislav Vishnevskiy, Discord co-founder and CTO, Safer for Teens, Same Discord for Adults, September 22, 2026
The placement job will take a few days to reach every account after the September 23 start. Age group status sits under User Settings, Account Status, and Discord says it will never ask for that confirmation by email or text.
