Final Fantasy VII Revelation Opens Hard Mode on Game One
Revelation opens Hard Mode on a first save, dropping Remake’s second-run lock as FITS jobs and post-game take over.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation will let players pick Hard Mode on a first save, director Naoki Hamaguchi said after Tokyo Game Show 2026. In Remake and Rebirth, that setting stayed locked until the credits.
The change is not a louder copy of the old gauntlet. Hamaguchi said the team rebuilt the high-difficulty path around new combat tools and a pile of post-game work that no longer needs a second full story run.
Hard Mode Opens on the First Boot
Comments from the TGS sit-down circulated on October 18, 2026, and Hamaguchi posted the same day that he had spelled out how Hard Mode will work. He had been answering a run of questions that piled up after a September scare that the setting was gone.
Since I’ve seen quite a few people asking about Hard Mode recently, I talked about how Hard Mode will work in FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION.

Hard Mode, he said, “won’t function in the exact same way as it did in Remake and Rebirth.” The team “reimagined the high-difficulty experience to align with the new game design,” and the setting is selectable from the very start. Players who want tough fights on a first file can have them without rolling credits first.
He tied that choice to structure, not mercy. Revelation, unlike the first two remake games, is being built with “a wide variety of end-game content even after you’ve beaten the game.” The old loop, beat the story then switch on Hard, is no longer the only late-game plan.
That is the design tell. Square Enix is treating the first playthrough as a place for veterans, because the hours after the finale, and two named story packs, now carry the extra life a New Game Plus file used to provide.
Why Remake Locked Hard Mode Behind the Credits
Remake and Rebirth did not hide Hard Mode as a joke. Enemies in those files hit harder and take more punishment, and some bosses change their patterns. You also lose the crutches that carry a first run.
Consumables stay in the bag. Rest benches refill HP and leave MP untouched, so magic becomes a budget. Remake also paid 2x XP and 3x AP on that path, and some manuscripts and gear only dropped there. Rebirth kept the item ban and the stingy benches; chocobo-stop cushions were the rare MP exception.
You could not start a fresh file on Hard. Chapter select, unlocked after the story, was the door, and once a chapter was set to Hard you were stuck until you finished it or bailed. Guides still treat that second pass as the platinum’s combat half.
HARD MODE THEN AND NOW
| Rule | Remake and Rebirth | Revelation |
|---|---|---|
| When you can pick it | After the main story | On a first save |
| Items in battle | Banned | Allowed |
| Rest benches | HP only, no MP | Not described |
| What it is for | The post-credits challenge | A first-run option beside separate end-game work |
Those rules made Hard Mode a new game with your endgame party, not a slider on minute one. Enemies were tuned for high levels from chapter 1, which is why a cold start was never on the menu.
The Item Ban Does Not Survive FITS
The line veterans will feel is the one about potions. Hamaguchi said the team did not keep “the traditional rules centered around no item usage.” Cooperative abilities and the new FITS job suits have widened what a party can do, and “simply banning items wouldn’t be enough” for the hard fight they want.
In Revelation, we’ve created a challenging environment that will thoroughly satisfy those seeking high difficulty, while also expanding players’ freedom and strategic options.

So the name comes back and the identity does not. Old Hard Mode was a resource famine. New Hard Mode is meant to be a denser puzzle with more buttons still live, including the item bar.
That is the leftover argument after the unlock news. Opening the setting on boot fixes the second-run tax. Leaving items on means a first-file Hard run will not feel like Rebirth’s chapter select files, even if the HP bars are meaner.
Four Job Suits, Unlocked After a Few Hours
FITS is the system Hamaguchi is using to justify that wider kit. Square Enix frames it as specialized roles, four FITS types at PAX West, that sit on top of each character’s existing style rather than replacing it. Battle director Teruki Endo told that panel the battle system already felt complete after Rebirth, and FITS was the surprise they still wanted to add.
Each suit changes commands and comes with its own look. Endo limited the set to four on purpose, so each one would play differently instead of padding a long job list.
THE FOUR FITS ROLES
- Warrior: Signature commands such as Cloud’s Braver can fire more often, including outside a normal ATB spend, and a special move helps Limit Breaks come up.
- Knight: Defense and party cover, including a taunt, stronger guarding that also shields nearby allies, and a heavy special that buffs the group.
- Black Mage: Fire, lightning, wind, and ice become a main plan, with cheaper follow-up spells of the same element and new -ja tier magic such as Firaja.
- Summoner: Extra summon commands let a summoned beast attack beside you, fire set pieces, and run synergy moves beyond a normal summon drop.
Hamaguchi wanted players to mix those roles freely. Endo pushed to put the full set in reach as soon as the system appears, rather than dripping jobs out across the plot.
Warrior and Black Mage Push the Attack
Warrior is the blunt version of a character you already know, built so Cloud still plays like Cloud while swinging more often. Black Mage is the swing in the other direction, turning MP from a heal budget into an offense plan, which is exactly why an item ban would collide with the new kit.
If Firaja and elemental imprints are the point, stripping Ethers and phoenix downs would flatten the build space Hamaguchi keeps selling. The team is betting that more verbs, used well, will hurt more than a locked item bag.
Jobs Unlock a Few Hours In
Hard Mode may be on the boot screen. FITS is not. Hamaguchi said the suits unlock about 5-6 hours in, and at that moment every FITS for every character is usable. Skins can be picked separately from the equipped job, so the look and the role do not have to match.
The first stretch of a Hard file is therefore the older hybrid combat at a higher setting, with items still in play, before the job layer arrives. Anyone hoping to break the finale on minute one with a Summoner Cloud will wait through that opening.
Enemies Still Rise With the Party
For players who wanted the old late-game crunch, Hamaguchi pointed at Dynamic Mode, which Rebirth already shipped. In that setting, enemy stats climb with the party so side content does not turn the map into a farm. He described it as the place for “highly strategic battles with both enemies and your character fully leveled up.”
It is easy to mash the two names together. Hard Mode is the high-difficulty option from the start. Dynamic Mode is the scaler that keeps fights honest as you grow. They can sit beside each other, which is how some players are already reading the comments, as two dials rather than one renamed mode.
Square Enix also said the planet opens on the Highwind, with free party swaps on the field and a grappling gun for rooftops. An airship that can point you at nasty fights early is a second reason a post-credits-only Hard Mode would have been a poor fit. Difficulty has to travel with the ship.
Square Enix Wants One in Five Platinums
Unlocking Hard Mode on file one also lands on the trophy sheet. Rebirth’s platinum, The Planet’s Hope, sits at 2.6% of PlayStation players, an ultra-rare mark Hamaguchi has owned in public. He said the team wanted people to “go through all this content and perfect it,” then admitted they “didn’t expect so many people to want the platinum trophy.”
Endo’s reaction, as Hamaguchi recalled it, was “Oh, no! I feel bad – I have regrets.” For Revelation he wants battles “enjoyable rather than just challenging,” and he is aiming higher: “we’re expecting twenty percent of players or maybe even more than that to be able to obtain it.”
THE PLATINUM SHIFT
- Rebirth rate: About 2.6% on PlayStation, the figure Hamaguchi has discussed.
- Revelation target: 20% of players, or more, by Hamaguchi’s own forecast.
- Rebirth structure: Trophy guides still say you must complete all chapters on Hard after a first clear.
- Revelation lever: Hard Mode on the first save removes that forced second story if the trophy list follows the new unlock.
A 20% platinum is still a long game. It is not Rebirth’s mini-game wall plus a banned-item replay. Square Enix is even smoothing the on-ramp to the first two titles with Streamlined Progression, including unlimited HP and MP and a full ATB gauge, so more people can arrive at Revelation ready to play it on purpose.
Sephiroth and Vincent Packs Fill the Old New Game Plus Slot
The other half of Hamaguchi’s argument is content after the last boss. Square Enix has already named it. Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on April 8, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox on PC. A Story Expansion Pass then adds two story DLCs, planned between Winter 2027 and Spring 2028.
Story DLC 1 is Sephiroth. Story DLC 2 is Vincent and the Turks. Both will go on sale alone after they ship. Standard digital is $69.99. Premium at $99.99 folds in the pass and 24-hour early access. Premium Plus is $109.99. The Square Enix Store collector bundle is $349.99. A trilogy edition is $84.99 for players still catching up.
THE RELEASE AND DLC WINDOW
- June 9, 2026: Square Enix announces Revelation for a Spring 2027 multiplatform launch.
- September 3, 2026: The April 8, 2027 date lands, with the Sephiroth and Vincent packs named.
- October 18, 2026: Hamaguchi confirms Hard Mode on a first save and keeps Dynamic Mode.
- April 8, 2027: The main game ships, with Premium early access the day before.
- Winter 2027 to Spring 2028: The two story packs are planned to arrive.
That calendar is why Hard Mode no longer has to be the encore. The encore already has names, prices, and a season. Hamaguchi, who has been on this series for more than 10 years, said his focus is on finishing Revelation rather than talking about what comes after it. The difficulty menu is already doing part of that finish: the first file can be the hard one, and the months after launch are booked for extra story instead of a mandatory second trip through the same chapters.
