The Coalition locked Gears of War: E-Day to gold on September 17, 19 days before the October 6 launch. Studio head Mike Crump said the build is finished, with pre-install starting September 29 at 8 a.m. Pacific on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Steam.

Premium Edition owners can play on October 1, while Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members wait until October 6.

Pre-Install Begins September 29 at 8 a.m. Pacific

Crump’s studio gone gold in a September 17 note that reads less like a trophy and more like a shipping schedule. Pre-install opens at 8 a.m. Pacific (15:00 UTC) on September 29 for anyone who pre-ordered and for Game Pass members who plan to play on day one. That download window sits two days before Premium early access and seven days before the worldwide launch.

THE LAUNCH WINDOW

  1. September 17, 2026: The Coalition locks the gold master and publishes the launch PC spec sheet.
  2. September 29, 2026: Pre-install opens at 8 a.m. Pacific on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Steam.
  3. October 1, 2026: Premium Edition owners begin playing at 8 a.m. Pacific, up to five days early.
  4. October 6, 2026: Worldwide launch at 8 a.m. Pacific, including Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

The franchise account posted the same calendar the night the gold note landed. The replies that stuck were not about the disc. They were about October 1.

Clearing 115 GB on an SSD is the practical first move, because the launch spec sheet requires a solid-state drive at every tier. An HDD is not supported. Game Pass members who wait until October 6 still get the September 29 pre-install, which is how Microsoft avoids a 115 GB stampede at 8 a.m. on launch morning.

We’re excited to finally put the game in your hands when Early Access begins October 1, ahead of launch on October 6.

Mike Crump, Studio Head, The Coalition, on Xbox Wire

E-Day is the origin story set 14 years before the 2006 Gears of War, with Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago on the day the Locust first break the surface. It is built in Unreal Engine 5 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Steam, with a 4K target and up to 60 FPS in campaign and multiplayer on a compatible display. Two-player split-screen is console only. Online campaign co-op, Horde Siege, and Versus need a Game Pass plan that includes online multiplayer, sold separately.

What GPU Does Gears of War E-Day Need?

The gold spec sheet is the filter on that calendar. Every published frame target assumes upscaling is on, through NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 4, or Intel XeSS 3.0. The Coalition also lists hardware ray-traced reflections, shadows, and global illumination, plus HDR, ultrawide monitors, and a built-in benchmark. The Steam listing requires hardware ray tracing in plain language: a GPU with dedicated RT hardware is required, and cards without it are not supported.

That line retires the GTX 10-series and AMD’s pre-RDNA 2 cards. The floor is an RTX 2060 or an RX 6600, listed beside current entry cards, the RTX 5050 and the RX 9060, so a new budget GPU and a 2018 RTX card share the same row. Minimum is 1080p at 60 FPS on the Medium preset, with upscaling. Recommended is 1440p at 60-plus on High. Ultra is 4K at 60-plus, and that row jumps to an RTX 5070 Ti or an RX 7900 XT.

LAUNCH PC SPEC SHEET

Tier Target GPU CPU VRAM / RAM
Minimum (Medium) 1080p 60 FPS with upscaling RTX 5050, RTX 2060, RX 6600, RX 9060 Ryzen 5 2600X, Core i7-6850K, Core i5-10400 6 GB / 12 GB
Recommended (High) 1440p 60-plus FPS with upscaling RTX 5060, RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6700 XT, RX 9060 XT Ryzen 5 5600, Core i5-11600K 8 GB / 16 GB
Ultra 4K 60-plus FPS with upscaling RTX 5070 Ti, RX 7900 XT Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Core i7-14700K 12 GB / 16 GB

Storage is 115 GB on an SSD for all three rows. Crump said the studio kept tuning PC stability after the summer multiplayer beta, and the Ultra column is the new piece of that work. The 12 GB RAM minimum is the one break in an otherwise strict modern list. The GPU is not. If the card cannot do hardware ray tracing, the game will not run.

A $30 Gap Between October 1 and October 6

Standard Edition is $69.99. Premium Edition is $99.99. The extra $30.00 buys the five-day head start on October 1, the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack for campaign only, 1,000 Iron, and five seasonal customization packs that begin with the Emergence Pack at launch. A $30 Premium Edition Upgrade exists for players who start on Standard. The official rundown of Premium Edition contents and pre-order bonus also names the launch cosmetics: Death’s Rendezvous Marcus Fenix, Bloodied Hunter Tai Kaliso, and the matching weapon skins, poses, banner, and icon.

WHAT THE PREMIUM EDITION ADDS

  • Early access: Play starts October 1 at 8 a.m. Pacific, five days before Game Pass and Standard owners.
  • Campaign kit: The Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack is locked to campaign, not Horde or Versus.
  • Seasons: Five customization packs ship over time, with Emergence at launch and the rest as each season drops.
  • Currency: 1,000 Iron is the premium in-game stack included in the box.

Every paid edition, including Standard, still gets the pre-order extras: the Exfil Dom character skin and the Exfil weapon skin set, plus the summer Open Beta access that already ran. Collector’s Edition is $299.99 and bundles the Premium digital upgrade with a 15-inch Marcus and Dom statue, replica Carlos Santiago COG tags, a Luke Preece SteelBook, and a physical disc on Xbox or a digital token on Steam. That box also launches October 1. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass skip the $30 clock and arrive with the rest of the world on October 6.

The gold note makes that split official. Microsoft is not asking Game Pass to wait because the build is late. The build is gold. The wait is the product.

Horde Siege Already Ate the Beta Hours

The summer test already showed which mode the gold build has to feed. Early access ran August 6 through August 10 for pre-orders and Game Pass, with a second weekend August 13 through August 17 open to everyone. Horde Siege is a 12-player PvE mode, three squads of four on the same city map, with Assault, Marksman, Medic, and Breacher classes, shared objectives, and world bosses. Versus is a tighter 4v4 with Ranked and Social playlists, plus jump, vault, and slide on top of the old cover-based gunfight.

The Coalition’s own beta tally put Horde Siege at 54 percent of matches and 61 percent of hours played, against 39 percent of matches in Versus. Assault was the most used class at 36 percent, then Medic at 23.6 percent, Marksman at 20.8 percent, and Breacher at 19.6 percent. The Gnasher still led the kill board at 143.1 million, ahead of the Lancer’s 108.4 million. Players wiped more than 314 million Locust, and more than 60,000 of them died to the Raven at extraction.

THE COALITION BETA TALLY

  • Xbox sample: Rhys Elliott at Alinea Analytics estimated 1.2 million Xbox players on console and Windows in the first beta window, with nearly 90 percent coming from Gears 5 and 55 percent from Gears of War: Reloaded.
  • Time in: 24.1 percent of those players logged 10-plus hours in a four-day test, and 6.5 percent logged 20-plus.
  • Steam peak: SteamDB logged an all-time concurrent high of 22,084 in the open beta, above Gears 5’s 10,196, Gears Tactics’ 7,351, and Reloaded’s 4,819.
  • Pre-orders: Elliott estimated Steam pre-orders moved from about 50,000 before the beta to about 100,000 after it.

That is a returning Xbox crowd and a larger Steam test than this series has had on that store. It is also a Horde crowd. The gold build can ship a campaign about Emergence Day, but the live game that has to hold after October 6 is the 12-player siege on Kalona, with five themed seasons already promised and Season 1 titled Emergence.

55 Achievements, One Zero-Point Capstone

Studio Brand Director Nicole Fawcette posted the full 55-achievement list on September 9, eight days before gold. The set is worth 1,000 Gamerscore. Forty-six of the 55 awards pay 15 points, six pay 25, and the two grind pieces at the bottom are the old Gears joke told again. “For Whom The Bell Tolls” is 75 points for finishing the campaign on Insane with every side mission and hidden item. “Dead Serious” is 85 points for 100 percent of the campaign on Insane, 25,000 Versus kills, max player level, and max rank on all four Horde classes.

The campaign is five acts. “Remember Kalona” is a 25-point clear on any difficulty. “Today We Are Canceling the Apocalypse” is the Insane clear. “The Lucky Ones Died on E-Day” pays 0 points and unlocks when every other achievement is done. Fawcette called Gears famous, sometimes infamous, for this list, and the gold build now has to carry it. “Got Your Wings” asks players to re-up for the final time. “Field Service” sits at player level 100 and the first re-up. Horde has its own pile, including 50 survived missions, 50,000 Horde kills, and an extract with the full squad alive on Allfather.

A 0-point capstone and an 85-point “Seriously” cousin are how this series has always stretched a launch past the credits. They also tell you the gold master is not a campaign-only disc. Versus kills and four maxed classes are in the same sentence as Insane.

Steam Licenses Stay Off Xbox Play Anywhere

The storefront split is the last gate on the same week. Buy E-Day on the Xbox Series X|S store or the Xbox on PC store and Xbox Play Anywhere gives you both. A Steam license does not. Game Pass day one covers the Xbox app and console, not a Steam library copy. Pre-install still runs on all three storefronts on September 29, so the download is shared even when the license is not.

That is the launch The Coalition actually shipped to gold: a 115 GB SSD install, a ray-tracing GPU as the true minimum, a $30 door on October 1, and a Game Pass flood on October 6. The disc is done. The queue is not.

Numbers get particular attention here. A percentage in a business story is recomputed from the underlying figures before it goes live, a benchmark in a technology or gaming review is quoted with the conditions it was measured under, and a transfer fee or a lap time in the sports and auto pages is traced back to the club, the league or the timing sheet that published it. The same rule covers news, science, entertainment, lifestyle and travel: if a figure cannot be tied to a filing, a dataset, a transcript or a test Harry ran himself, it does not appear.
