Meta’s 100-Gram VR Glasses Still Need a Pocket Puck

Meta VR Glasses put about 100 grams on the face by moving compute to a pocket puck, list at $1,299.99, and go on sale in Spring 2027.

Meta priced Meta VR Glasses at $1,299.99 and put about 100 grams on the face by moving the computer into a pocket puck. The company unveiled the two-part headset on September 23, 2026 at Meta Connect and said the kit goes on sale Spring 2027 for $1,299.99.

Influencers treated that face weight as the form factor spatial computing had been waiting for. The number is real, and it is also the part of the product that does not include the computer, the battery, or the wait.

The Computer Lives in a Pocket Puck

Meta said the glasses are five times lighter than Meta Quest 3, primarily because of their two-part system. The frames hold the sensors and the display in a magnesium alloy that the company says adds rigidity and helps keep everything cool. The puck, joined by an optical tether, holds compute, battery, and storage, and clips to a pocket or bag.

Meta’s own store lists a Quest 3 headset weight of 515 grams. One hundred grams on the nose and ears is a hard cut in what a visor usually asks you to wear. It is also an incomplete description of this product, because the product is glasses plus a computer you carry somewhere else.

Hands-on spec sheets after the keynote put the puck around 300 grams, roughly the size of two phones stacked together, and said the frames hold no onboard compute at all, not even a tracking coprocessor. Add those figures and the carried kit is about 400 grams, still under the Quest 3 visor, with most of the mass shifted onto a clip. Meta has not published a puck weight of its own.

THE WEIGHT SPLIT

  • On the face: About 100 grams, according to Meta, with no straps.
  • Quest 3 visor: 515 grams for the all-in-one headset Meta used as the comparison.
  • Apple headset: 750 to 800 grams including the Light Seal and Dual Knit Band.
  • Apple pack: A separate battery weighs 353 grams, with the computer still on the face.
  • Meta puck: Hands-on accounts put it around 300 grams and say it holds the chip, the cell, and storage.

Meta rates the puck battery at up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback, with 45W fast charging. That is a movie window, not a full workday, and it matches the video rating Apple quotes for Vision Pro. You can charge while you use it, which is how both companies stretch a short cell.

70 Degrees Across, About 110 on Quest 3

The glasses are open at the sides, so the room stays in your periphery, and a full-color passthrough camera fills the view through the lenses. Meta is selling that for a flight or a couch, where you still want a sense of the aisle. It is a different pitch from a sealed visor that tries to erase the room.

Hands-on spec sheets after Connect list a 70-degree horizontal field of view and 66 degrees vertical, against about 110 by 96 degrees on Quest 3. The panels are Meta’s first micro-OLED since the original Quest, a 5K Infinite Display at 37 pixels per degree, which the company is pitching for text. Sharpness goes up. Width of view goes down. Optional light blockers can close the gaps when you want the room gone, and with them on the narrow window is the whole show.

WHAT SITS ON THE FACE

Device On-face weight What lives off the face Display claim
Meta VR Glasses About 100 g Compute, battery, and storage in a puck 5K Infinite Display, 37 PPD, micro-OLED
Meta Quest 3 515 g None; all-in-one visor 4K+ Infinite Display, 25 PPD
Apple Vision Pro 750 to 800 g 353 g battery only 23 million pixels, micro-OLED

Those per-eye pixel counts circulating after the keynote, 2412 by 2288 at up to 120Hz, come from the same spec sheets, not from Meta’s blog post. Meta stuck to 5K, 37 pixels per degree, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos in the frames, and a first-ever IMAX Enhanced certification for a VR device. The optical bill for looking like glasses is the 70-degree window, and it is the figure the keynote did not lead with.

Why the Vision Pro Weight Math Leaves the Packs Out

Mark Gurman wrote that a demo felt close to Apple Vision Pro at less than half the price and one sixth the weight. Apple’s spec sheet lists the current headset at 750 to 800 grams with the Light Seal and Dual Knit Band, plus that 353-gram battery. Meta moved the processor as well as the cell. Apple left the computer on your face and only the pack in a pocket.

NEW: Meta debuts $1,299 VR Glasses at 100 grams by offloading the battery and compute to an external pack. In a demo, it’s pretty close to the Apple Vision Pro at less than half the price and 1/6th the weight. They are incredible.

Mark Gurman, on X

The one-sixth line only holds if you weigh Meta’s frames against Apple’s visor and ignore both tethers. Count the packs and the gap shrinks, though the load on the face still favors Meta by a wide margin. Apple publishes 23 million pixels, an M5 chip with an R1 companion, and up to 2.5 hours of general use. Meta has not put a Vision Pro sticker price on its own blog, and Gurman’s “less than half” is his comparison, not a shop listing.

Both kits already accepted a cable. The argument is how much of the machine that cable is allowed to carry. Meta’s answer is almost all of it, which is why the frames can skip a strap and still hold micro-OLED panels, eye cameras, and hand tracking.

Influencer Applause Met a Spring 2027 Wait

GlobalData’s social desk, in a note dated September 29, 2026, found strong enthusiasm for the weight cut and the $1,299.99 price, which many posts treated as a workable number for virtual monitors and wearable media. Shreyasee Majumder, a social media analyst at the firm, said the same threads already named the trade-offs.

Influencer sentiment on X reflected strong enthusiasm for the dramatic weight reduction and the $1,299 price point, which many consider a practical foundation for multi-monitor workstations and wearable spatial media. While discussions acknowledged technical trade-offs such as passive cooling and the wait until 2027, the broader consensus indicates that Meta is successfully executing its long-term hardware roadmap to connect lightweight spatial hardware with multimodal personal AI.

Chad E. Colby, marketing director at TCI Manufacturing, wrote that 100 grams was the big number and that this was the direction he had been waiting for. Linus Ekenstam, an AI founder at Flocurve, called it a Vision Pro-like experience jammed into glasses. The posts that traveled treated the keynote as a product you could already judge. The product is still a season away, and Meta has not opened preorders or named a day inside Spring 2027.

The argument under those posts was practical. People started sketching ways to kill the cable, move the chip into the arms, or hot-swap a battery so the tether would not snag. That is a useful read of the design. The 100-gram number won the room, and the fiber run to a pocket is the part a buyer will feel every time they stand up, sit down, or try to lend the glasses to someone else.

Snapdragon Reality Elite Was Built for Tethered Glasses

Meta said the puck runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor. Qualcomm announced that platform in June 2026, months before Connect, as a chip for high-end mixed reality and for lighter tethered glasses, with up to 48 TOPS of AI processing for on-device language and vision models. Against its prior XR flagship, the company claims up to 60 percent more GPU throughput, 30 percent more CPU, and 160 percent more NPU, plus up to 20 percent longer battery life at the same workload.

The cooling claim is the one that maps onto a puck in a pocket. Qualcomm said the chipset runs up to 12 degrees Celsius cooler under load. Meta’s frames are fanless, which is how they stay at about 100 grams; the heat has to go somewhere, and the somewhere is the pack on your belt. Don McGuire, Qualcomm’s chief marketing officer, tied the glasses to Ray-Ban Meta Audio and Muse Charm as Snapdragon devices meant to work as a set rather than as a single slab of hardware.

Hands-on notes after the show also put 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in the puck, with a microSD slot for cards up to 1TB. Meta’s blog does not list those memory figures. It does say you can talk to a Meta AI agent in the operating system, or use eyes and hands, with no controllers required for the basic job of starting a film or moving a window.

Audio Glasses and a Pocket Charm at Connect

Connect did not put a new Quest visor on the table. It put a glasses-shaped VR kit next to the company’s existing AI glasses push, then told that kit to run the same store as Quest 3. Meta said more than 75 games will play with hand gestures at launch, that the full Quest catalog is available, and that Touch Plus controllers still work if you want them. Xbox Cloud Gaming is in, and a Mac or Windows PC can join over Wi-Fi or USB-C, with full-color passthrough so the physical keyboard stays visible.

WHAT THE KEYNOTE STACKED WITH THE GLASSES

  • The pitch: A cinema, a courtside seat, a multi-screen desk, and a console in one kit that fits in a bag.
  • The input: Eyes, hands, and voice first; optional Touch Plus controllers, not required for the demo path.
  • The work mode: Several virtual screens, a table that becomes a keyboard and touchpad, and a PC brought in as an extra display.
  • The calls: Hologram calling that Meta says works with apps from WhatsApp to Zoom, with a photorealistic face and spatial audio.
  • The sports slate: Over 100 immersive live events a year after launch, with MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports, and UFC named as partners.

McGuire’s post is the cleanest map of the rest of the stage: Ray-Ban Meta Audio, Muse Charm, and the VR Glasses as connected Snapdragon devices. Vaibhav Sisinty, founder of GrowthSchool, wrote that Muse now has voice and real-time video and is coming to Meta Glasses for hands-free use. Meta’s own VR Glasses post speaks of a Meta AI agent in the OS, not of a separate gadget you have to buy to make the frames work.

Hands-on write-ups after the show said the puck also takes USB-C DisplayPort, so a laptop or handheld can throw a virtual screen without a capture card. That is a concrete job the split architecture is good at: keep the panels on your face, keep the ports on the brick in your pocket, and treat the glasses as a display you can sit still with. It is less obvious how that brick behaves when you stand, turn, or try to play a title that still wants two wands.

Until Spring 2027 the 100-gram number is a demo you cannot take home. Meta has not opened preorders and has not set a day inside that season. The frames are light because the computer is elsewhere, on a tether, with a 70-degree window and a three-hour media cell, and that is the product the keynote actually announced.

Numbers get particular attention here. A percentage in a business story is recomputed from the underlying figures before it goes live, a benchmark in a technology or gaming review is quoted with the conditions it was measured under, and a transfer fee or a lap time in the sports and auto pages is traced back to the club, the league or the timing sheet that published it. The same rule covers news, science, entertainment, lifestyle and travel: if a figure cannot be tied to a filing, a dataset, a transcript or a test Harry ran himself, it does not appear.
