Modern Warfare 4 Closes a Saga Activision Already Ended Once
Activision billed Modern Warfare 4 as the epic conclusion of the 2019 saga, the same week Treyarch left Black Ops after a fifth-place U.S. year.
Activision billed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 as the “epic conclusion” of the saga in trailer copy posted September 17. The line sat on the official Call of Duty account above a cinematic that sends Task Force 141 from Korea into a war with no borders.
The game, led by Infinity Ward, still launches October 23 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The phrase does not retire the Modern Warfare name. It does land in the same week Treyarch finished two years of Black Ops after the franchise’s weakest United States sales year since 2008, which is the last time this company closed Modern Warfare and tried to live without it.
Activision Wrote the Ending Into the Trailer
The posted line is short enough to travel and vague enough to argue over. “From Korea to the farthest reaches of the globe, Task Force 141 faces a war with no borders. Witness the epic conclusion.” That is the entire claim. There is no follow-up from Activision on whether the 2019 universe is done, or only the plot that started with the reboot.

The trailer itself is doing campaign work, not brand work. Mads Mikkelsen shows up as a major antagonist, a beat Activision confirmed during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast. Captain Price is a wanted man. Ghost and Gaz are told to bring him in. Some posts treated the caption as a shutdown of Modern Warfare as a product line. Activision has not said that. The original trilogy already used up this funeral in 2011, which is why the new line reads like a calendar clear-out as much as a last chapter.
The Same Week Treyarch Walked Off Black Ops
Treyarch posted its last Black Ops 7 Dev Talk on September 16, a day before the MW4 trailer. Design director Kevin Drew was saying goodbye to a two-year run that covered Black Ops 6 in 2024 and Black Ops 7 in 2025. Season 6 for Black Ops 7 went live September 17, the same date as the campaign film.
This is a bittersweet goodbye, but I think over the last two years, we’ve learned a lot. We’ve tried a lot of things in our current era. But we’re ready to make something new and something that nobody’s ever experienced before.
Kevin Drew, Treyarch design director, Black Ops 7 Dev Talk
Drew did not name the next Treyarch game. He did not say Black Ops 8 is cancelled. Co-studio head Yale Miller used the same video to praise Infinity Ward’s playtests and to point players at MW4. The timing still stacks. Treyarch just shipped back-to-back Black Ops games, the second of which fell to fifth in United States premium sales for 2025, and the studio’s public language is now about leaving “our current era.”
Black Ops has been Treyarch’s main Call of Duty brand since 2010. If the next Treyarch project drops that name, the annual rotation would be without both of the sub-series that have carried it for a decade and a half. That is the hole the 2019 reboot was built to fill the last time Infinity Ward walked away from Modern Warfare.
Infinity Ward Already Closed This Saga Once
The original Modern Warfare run ended after three games. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 shipped in 2011. Infinity Ward kicked around a fourth entry, did not get far, and made Call of Duty: Ghosts instead. Ghosts was a new name with familiar guns. Infinite Warfare, in 2016, pushed the studio further from the modern setting that made the brand, and fan support hit a low. Activision bundled Modern Warfare Remastered in the same box.
Three years later the studio went back to the name that still sold. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launched October 25, 2019, with Captain Price rebuilt and Task Force 141 formed again in a new timeline. Activision said that December the reboot had passed $1 billion in sell-through. Warzone followed and became the live service that kept the 2019 universe on screens between annual boxes. The last closer held for eight years.
TWO TIMES THE SAGA WAS DECLARED OVER
| Year | Game | Lead studio | What followed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2011 | Modern Warfare 3 | Infinity Ward | Ghosts, then Infinite Warfare |
| 2013 | Ghosts | Infinity Ward | A new name after the original trilogy |
| 2016 | Infinite Warfare | Infinity Ward | Modern Warfare Remastered in the same box |
| 2019 | Modern Warfare reboot | Infinity Ward | Return to the name; Warzone follows |
| 2025 | Black Ops 7 | Treyarch | Fifth in U.S. premium sales, per Circana |
| 2026 | Modern Warfare 4 | Infinity Ward | Trailer copy calls it the epic conclusion |
The 2019 game, Modern Warfare II in 2022, Modern Warfare III in 2023, and MW4 make four numbered entries in the reboot, one more than the original trilogy. Infinity Ward already knows how this ending goes, because it wrote the last one and then spent eight years undoing it.
Fifth Place, and the Lowest Rank Since 2008
Black Ops 7 still won its launch month. Circana logged it as the best-selling premium game in the United States in November 2025, the 18th straight year a Call of Duty box has done that since World at War. The calendar year is a different list. Battlefield 6 finished 2025 as the best-selling premium game in the United States on Circana’s tracked platforms, the first time that series has beaten Call of Duty over a full year.
CIRCANA 2025 U.S. PREMIUM RANKING
- First: Battlefield 6, Electronic Arts.
- Second: NBA 2K26, Take-Two Interactive.
- Third: Borderlands 4, Take-Two Interactive.
- Fourth: Monster Hunter: Wilds, Capcom.
- Fifth: Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, the lowest Call of Duty full-year place since World at War finished sixth in 2008.
Black Ops 7 launched into Game Pass on day one. Battlefield 6 did not, and it arrived earlier in the year, so the ranking is not a clean head-to-head on price. It is still the chart Treyarch is walking away from. A franchise that has treated launch-month first place as a habit just posted its weakest United States year since 2008, then used a Dev Talk to talk about making something nobody has experienced. MW4 now has to open that next year without the subscription crutch those two Black Ops games had.
What the Campaign Still Has to Close
Infinity Ward’s plot is built to feel like a last chapter even if the trademark stays on the shelf. After Price kills General Shepherd at the end of Modern Warfare III, Task Force 141 is disbanded and Price is on the run. Ghost questions the methods. Ghost and Gaz are tasked to capture or kill their former captain. CIA station chief Kate Laswell stays in contact and is already wary. Narrative director Jeff Negus said the studio has three games worth of canon to stand on, and that Price did things in Modern Warfare III he cannot come back from.
THE THREADS THE TRAILER IS SELLING
- The manhunt: Price operates off the books while remnants of 141 are sent after him.
- The invasion: North Korea launches a full-scale attack on South Korea; players fight as Private Park Hyun Jun, a conscript seeing live combat for the first time.
- The weapon: An unknown device is being moved to an enemy the blog names only as The Archer.
- The ally: Price turns to Valeria Garza, El Sin Nombre of the Las Almas cartel, after former friends become hunters.
The campaign still jumps from trench fighting in Korea to close-quarters work in New York, chases in Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai, and city assaults to take occupied ground. Negus called the Korean squad one of the largest casts the studio has put in a Call of Duty campaign, with American Marines West and Dunn embedded beside Park, Jay, Cho, and Moon. Associate design director Alex Norris said the Paris chase sits on miles of city the team built to feel like the real streets, then drops a gunfight through them.
That is a finale structure: the squad broken, the captain gone rogue, a world war on a peninsula, a named weapon in the wrong hands. It can end those plots without ending the right to print Modern Warfare on a box in 2029.
MW4 Must Sell Without Game Pass at Launch
Microsoft spent two years putting new Call of Duty games into Game Pass on day one, starting with Black Ops 6. On April 21, 2026, it cut Game Pass Ultimate from $29.99 a month to $22.99 and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99, and it pulled new Call of Duty titles out of launch-day catalogs. Activision said new games would still arrive on Ultimate “the following holiday after launch (about a year later).” The Xbox product page for MW4 now states the title is not available with Game Pass at launch.
Pre-order ads had to spell that out after two years of the opposite habit. Campaign early access still starts October 16 for digital pre-orders of the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition, a week before the October 23 launch. Eligible owners of Call of Duty games from 2019 onward get 10% off the Vault Edition. Day-one multiplayer puts players on 12 all-new 6v6 maps, plus large maps tied to the campaign’s war, and DMZ returns as the extraction mode.
The box is also on Switch 2 at launch, a Nintendo SKU the annual series has not had in this hardware generation. Xbox Play Anywhere lets a single purchase cover console and PC. None of that replaces the day-one Game Pass install base Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 used. MW4 has to convert trailer heat into paid copies in a year when the last Call of Duty already finished fifth.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The copy: The official account called MW4 the epic conclusion of the Modern Warfare saga on September 17.
- The date: The game launches October 23, with campaign early access October 16 for digital pre-orders.
- The studio split: Infinity Ward is shipping MW4; Treyarch has closed its Black Ops 7 Dev Talks and says it wants to make something new.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The trademark: Activision has not said the Modern Warfare name is retired beyond this storyline.
- Treyarch’s next box: Drew’s “something new” is not a named sub-franchise, and it is not a cancellation of Black Ops.
- The 2027 slot: Activision has not announced the next annual Call of Duty, or which studio leads it.
Reading the trailer line as a green light for a fresh sub-franchise is the same move that followed Modern Warfare 3. Ghosts and Infinite Warfare were that experiment. The 2019 reboot was the correction. If Modern Warfare is parked and Black Ops is tired, the next unfamiliar title would not have those two names waiting on the shelf.
No Safety Net After October 23
The safer reading is narrower. Infinity Ward is ending the plot it started in 2019, with Price hunted by his own people and a Korean war as the backdrop, and Treyarch is done talking about the Black Ops 7 year that finished fifth. Those are finished sentences. The open one is the 2027 box, which still has no public name.
The last time this company wrote “the end” on Modern Warfare, the next new name did not hold, and the old one came back. MW4 still has to play the campaign it is selling, on October 23, without Game Pass on day one. The epic conclusion, as written, is a trailer caption. The last one like it lasted eight years.
