Albon Dumps Sainz in Q1 at Madrid’s First Grand Prix

Alex Albon dumped Carlos Sainz out of Q2 by 0.005s as both Spanish drivers missed the cut at Madrid’s first Formula 1 Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso went out with him. Oliver Bearman and Lance Stroll never ran.

George Russell then stole the Q1 top spot from championship leader Kimi Antonelli at the flag, a 1:33.211 that still only sets the middle part of Saturday. The back of Sunday’s grid is already a local wound.

Albon Knocks Sainz Out by 0.005s

Sainz is the circuit ambassador, a Madrid native, and the first driver on this grid who had already lapped the place. He spent the weekend at his parents’ house. Albon even went there for dinner. Then the Thai driver found the one lap that counted, and the local hero did not.

With four minutes left in Q1, Sainz sat 16th, less than a tenth clear of Alonso. Albon was still in the drop zone. The late improvement flipped the Williams garage: Albon went through, Sainz did not, and the margin was five thousandths. Williams had been leaking out of Q1 in recent races. One car made it. It was not the one the grandstands came to see.

Sainz had already told anyone who asked that the FW48 would hate this layout. On Thursday he did not dress it up.

I think it’s no secret that it’s still going to be a struggle for us. I couldn’t think about a layout that is probably more difficult for our car. But it’s OK. I’m just going to work extremely hard to make sure this is the last year that I come here to Madrid without a chance of fighting for something bigger.

He also said the Saturday and Sunday would sting, because he would not have a car with which to put on a show for the crowd that filled his home city. That forecast arrived on time. Williams has 11 points and sits ninth in the constructors’ table. Sainz has 6 of those, Albon 5. The upgrade package is pencilled for Baku, not here.

The Six Names That Missed Q2

Q1 at the Madring ended with a clean split: the two Williams cars separated by a blink, the two Aston Martins in the bottom six, and both Cadillacs out on the new team’s first Spanish weekend. Bearman and Stroll filled the last two slots without a representative lap.

Q1 CUT AT THE MADRING

Esteban Ocon took 15th for Haas. The surviving Williams still sat 0.640s behind him, a hole so large the midfield was racing a different session. Cadillac, which has scored 0 points in 2026, left both cars in the drop. Perez and Bottas at least set times. Aston Martin’s afternoon was uglier: Alonso 18th on merit, Stroll still in the garage.

Why Bearman and Stroll Never Ran

Haas made the call before the green light. The team said, “Ollie Bearman will not participate in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix as a result of the damage sustained to his VF-26.” The crash that caused it closed FP3.

Bearman lost the Haas at speed through Turn 10, clipped the right-front, and slammed the left side into the wall hard enough to wreck the floor and the bodywork. He climbed out on his own. Mechanics had about two hours, and less than that once Lewis Hamilton’s earlier barrier repairs had already eaten the clock. They ran out of time.

Stroll’s Saturday was a paperwork problem as much as a speed one. Aston Martin fitted a fresh set of power-unit parts after a suspected battery issue in FP2. An FIA Technical Delegate’s Report logged a fifth internal combustion engine, turbocharger and MGU-K, a sixth energy store, and a seventh PU-ANC, all over the seasonal cap. That is a grid drop large enough to send him to the back of a 22-car field. He never left the pit lane in Q1, so the penalty is academic. He was already last.

HOW SATURDAY CAME APART

1. Friday, September 11: Russell leads FP1 in 1:34.077. Antonelli answers in FP2 with 1:33.662. Alonso deals with a clutch fault. Stroll reports a late battery worry.
2. Saturday FP3: Albon glances the wall at Turn 20, breaks a rear track rod, and sets no time. Hamilton goes head-on at the last corner, tries to limp back with a broken wing and a puncture, and is told to stop. Bearman then bins the Haas at Turn 10. The hour loses about 30 minutes to two red flags for crashes.
3. Pre-qualifying: Haas withdraws Bearman. Stroll’s new power-unit parts are logged. Air is 27C, track 50C, sky clear.
4. Q1: Stroll stays in the garage. Russell tags a wall in a similar way to Albon’s FP3 tap, then still produces the 1:33.211. Albon eliminates Sainz by 0.005s.

The late FP3 finish even shoved the Formula 2 sprint back, a small sign of how much time the new walls had already taken. Hamilton at least got the Ferrari repaired and into Q1. Bearman did not get that luck.

Russell’s Last-Second 1:33.211

Antonelli had looked like the man all weekend. He was fastest in FP2 and again in FP3, a 1:32.797 that left Charles Leclerc 0.166s back, Oscar Piastri 0.189s, Lando Norris 0.236s, and Max Verstappen 0.375s. Mercedes had owned every practice hour, Russell on Friday morning and the 20-year-old after that.

Q1 was messier. Antonelli’s first proper banker was a 1:33.566. Liam Lawson then threw a 1:33.316 at the top, 0.250s quicker, with Verstappen only 0.065s slower on medium tyres. Gabriel Bortoleto, in the Audi, jumped as high as third. Antonelli locked up at Turn 17 and used the runoff. He still came back with a 1:33.267. Russell’s last lap, 1:33.211, was 0.056s faster than that and put Mercedes 1-2 in the first cut.

THE TITLE FIGHT INTO SATURDAY

• Antonelli: 267 points, championship lead, Q1 P2 after topping FP2 and FP3.
• Russell: 201 points, 66 behind his teammate, Q1 fastest after leading FP1.
• Hamilton: 191 points, into Q2 after the FP3 barrier strike.
• Constructors: Mercedes 468, Ferrari 346, McLaren 287, Red Bull 204.

Norris had almost no FP2 after a gearbox issue and still went fourth in the final hour. Verstappen and Lawson both showed the Red Bull could live with the front group on a single lap, even while the Dutchman sampled mediums. None of that repairs the hole behind them. Q2 and Q3 still have to rank the top 16. The people Spain came to watch are not in that group.

A Layout Sainz Called the Worst Fit

The Madring is a hybrid around IFEMA and Valdebebas, mixing 1.5 km of public roads with permanent asphalt. Formula 1 lists it at 5.414 km and 22 corners, 57 laps on Sunday, 308.399 km. Cars are expected to hit 340 kph. There are only two Straight Mode zones, and the overtake detection sits before Turn 22. Overtaking was always going to be scarce. Qualifying, on a track this tight, was always going to be the whole weekend for anyone more than a few tenths off.

WHAT THE NEW TRACK ASKS FOR

• Turn 1: About 200 m from the lights, a heavy brake from the 589 m pit straight.
• La Monumental: Turn 12, a 550 m banked right with a gradient up to 24 percent and room for about 45,000 people.
• The walls: A street section that ends in a chicane, then a technical run where a small slide writes off a session, as Albon, Hamilton, Bearman and even Russell found.
• Sainz’s read: If you wanted a layout that hurts the current Williams, this is the one.

Alonso, twice a world champion and the other Spaniard on the grid, had clutch trouble on Friday and was 17th in FP3, 2.223s off Antonelli. Sainz was 18th in that hour, 2.667s away, after a near-miss of his own at Turn 7. Aston Martin has 3 points. Alonso has all of them. Stroll has 0, and he has not escaped Q1 at all in 2026. The new circuit did not create that gap. It just refused to hide it.

Madrid’s First Grand Prix in 45 Years

Formula 1 had not raced in the Spanish capital since Jarama in 1981, when Gilles Villeneuve took his last win. Jarama sits about 30 km north of the city. Madrid first hosted the Spanish Grand Prix in 1968, in rotation with Barcelona’s Montjuïc, and then on its own after 1975. James Hunt and Mario Andretti won here in that era. Then the calendar moved to Jerez and Barcelona, and the capital waited.

The wait ended on a 10-year contract that runs through 2035. Madring’s own history page puts the return at 45 years after its last Madrid race. Sainz, named an ambassador while the circuit was still being built, called it a weekend he never would have dreamed of as a 10-year-old karting around this city. Williams even ran a tribute nod to 1981, the last time the championship came this close to town.

That is the joke the hour played. The ambassador is 17th. The other Spaniard is 18th. The teammate who ate at the family house is the Williams that advanced. A first Grand Prix in a city this proud was supposed to give those two a stage. It gave them a Q1 timesheet and a long Sunday in traffic.

The Back of the Grid Is Already Settled

Sainz starts 17th on the provisional grid. Alonso starts 18th. Perez and Bottas line up 19th and 20th for Cadillac. Bearman, with no time, is 21st. Stroll is 22nd, and the power-unit penalty cannot drop him any further. Q2 and Q3 still have to sort pole from the group Russell just headed in 1:33.211, with Antonelli 0.056s behind him and Lawson’s 1:33.316 still on the board from the first runs.

Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix is 57 laps on September 13. The new walls will still be there, and so will the 0.005s that sent the local driver the wrong way out of his own qualifying hour.
