Kate Middleton’s £99 Jeans Do the Work on Bute
On her first Rothesay visit, Kate Middleton’s £99 Holland Cooper jeans, not the Burberry trench, did the commercial work as London Fashion Week opened.
The Princess of Wales wore £99 Holland Cooper jeans and a chocolate Burberry trench on the Isle of Bute on September 17, 2026. It was her first official visit to the island that names the couple’s Scottish titles, built around shinty, a beach clean and a community pub.
London Fashion Week opened the same day, so the trench moved as a London story. The jean is the piece a shopper can buy before the ferry runs again.
A First Day in Their Namesake Town
William and Catherine, both 44, arrived by ferry as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, titles they have held for more than four years without an official stop in the town that supplies the name. Rothesay is the royal burgh on Bute. The diary was written around community, connection and volunteering, the same brief they carried on a visit to Mull and Iona in April 2025.
On Mull they had walked a community hall, a producers’ market and a ranger service in Atlantic woodland. Bute was the next island chapter, and the first time they had set the titles down in the place on the map.
Their own account called it a first visit and opened on sport. The caption put volunteers and belonging ahead of clothes, which is not how the pictures travelled.
A £99 Jean Did the Selling
Fashion pages filed the day as British luxury outdoors. The trousers doing the work sit in a different price band from the coat and the gold. Holland Cooper lists its signature Jodhpur Jeans at £99, and the chocolate pair on Bute is ticketed at the same figure in the brand’s country collection.
High-rise, skinny, cut with stretch, they are the house jean the founder has refused to retire. She told an interviewer in 2025 that skinny jeans in about 30 colours had been the bestseller for a decade, and that the company sold 40,000 pairs a year. A princess in chocolate jodhpurs on a Hebridean pitch is that product in its ideal weather.

The moss turtleneck with exposed seams, the suede Chelsea boots and the coffee belt from Madrid’s Maison Hotel completed the country register. A House of Bruar tweed baker boy cap came out at Ettrick Bay when the rain went sideways. That does not change the arithmetic: the earrings cost more than 32 pairs of the jeans.
Why the Trench Showed Up in London
The coat was Burberry, chocolate, double-breasted, with the house check flashing when the wind caught the hem. It is the garment London knows how to talk about. September 17 was day one of London Fashion Week, and Burberry was already in the city with archive pieces for a museum display.
The free V&A trench coat display, titled The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon, opens on September 21 at South Kensington and runs through January 3, 2027. That is four days after Bute. The house is marking 170 years. Online, the loudest posts tagged the princess to the trench and the trench to Fashion Week, which is a London reading of a Scottish working day.
William dressed in the same earth palette, olive jacket over a brown sweater, navy trousers, brown boots. The pictures look coordinated because they were. The commercial split still sits in her half of the frame. Burberry is the national luxury trademark. Holland Cooper is the brand that has described a Kate appearance as a global blow-up it cannot schedule.
Jade Holland Cooper Built This in a Field
Jade Holland Cooper founded the label in 2008 by selling tweed miniskirts at Badminton Horse Trials after leaving agricultural college, the farmer’s daughter who wanted race-day clothes that did not exist on the field. Tailoring and tweed are made in the United Kingdom. She has said the house is now one of the biggest buyers of UK wool. The catalogue runs to about 2,000 products, from £25 to £2,200, across womenswear, menswear, children, home and equestrian kit. US e-commerce opened in September 2024. In July 2026 she said the business was heading towards $100 million turnover, after an 88 percent rise over three years reported alongside that conversation.
The Princess of Wales has worn the brand for years, including a tartan trench the founder still calls one of the best days of her career, and a white bodysuit she has put back on more than once. There is no palace memo. Inventory does not get a night’s head start.
WHAT A KATE APPEARANCE DOES TO THIS BRAND
- The map: Holland Cooper said the back-end dots of live customers turn the globe green in a single hit.
- The phone: The first time Catherine wore the label, the founder was on a shoot with 40 missed calls and thought someone had died.
- The shop: She now meets customers who have flown to the Cotswolds stores from the United States and Australia because they saw the princess in the clothes.
Eloise Moran, a royal fashion commentator and author of The Lady Di Look Book, said a single appearance now does as much brand discovery as it does sell-out math, and that Catherine makes an investment purchase feel like a sensible one. Holland Cooper, she said, sits between heritage and modern tailoring without reading as costume, which is how the princess actually dresses for mud and cameras.
When we’re looking at our website page on the back end and you see all the dots as to where your customers are, the whole globe just goes green. It’s a phenomena.

That is the hidden ledger under an island photocall. A £99 jean does not need a luxury customer. It needs the pictures to land in places the Cheltenham sales team cannot buy.
Shinty Sticks, a Tractor and a Community Pint
The clothes had to work on a pitch, a wind-cut beach and a pub carpet. Shinty is played with a curved caman and a small leather ball. Bute has hosted the Buteman Cup since 1900. Bute Shinty Club is run by volunteers, many of them former players, and doubles as a social room for the island. Catherine picked up a stick, said “I want to give it a go,” missed, then started finding the keeper. She told Andy McAlindon, the content creator known as Andy the Highlander who was standing by the goal, “I was a bit worried I was going to take your teeth out.” Tom McMillan, a former Bute player, said she hit the ball better than William and was lining shots up.
THE ROTHESAY DAY, IN ORDER
- September 17, 2026: Arrive by ferry and visit Bute Shinty Club in Rothesay, watch an under-17s match, then take penalties on the pitch.
- September 17, 2026: Join Beachwatch Bute at Ettrick Bay, a group that has worked the coastline since 1998, ride the charity tractor and pick litter in hard rain.
- September 17, 2026: Close at the community-owned Anchor Tavern in Port Bannatyne, a pub locals brought back after it shut in 2020.
Sue Brooks of Beachwatch Bute offered gloves. Catherine declined them and said, “actually, I do this all the time,” then skipped the grabber and used her hands. William called the volume of waste frightening and pointed out to sea. Their later post from the bay credited almost three decades of community action for keeping the beaches usable. At the Anchor they thanked a room that now runs on volunteer hours. Catherine called the setup special. Talking to residents, she put a swim, a sauna that “appears,” and live music on a future Bute list.
Those are the people the titles were supposed to meet. The trench still led the fashion file, because a Burberry check on Fashion Week’s opening morning is easier to syndicate than a volunteer mechanic’s tractor.
What the Leaf Earrings Cost This Time
The gold at her ears was a repeat, not a debut. Kiki McDonough’s Lauren pavé diamond leaf earrings are listed at £3,200 in 18ct yellow gold, a 19.8mm drop inspired by ballerina Lauren Cuthbertson. The London workshop holds a royal warrant. Leaf, not heart, whatever the photographs suggest at a distance. On a day billed as island volunteering, they were the one line in the look that cost as much as a small wardrobe of the jeans.
That split is the point the fashion file keeps missing. Burberry supplied the silhouette London wanted on September 17. Kiki McDonough supplied the familiar sparkle. Holland Cooper supplied the garment that matches how the princess actually moves through rain, and the brand that has already measured what those pictures do to a shop map. Bute supplied the namesake town, late, and a volunteer timetable that will still be there when the trench is back on a mannequin in South Kensington.
She has already said she wants the swim. The jeans remain on the site for £99.
Frequently Asked Questions
What titles do William and Kate use in Scotland?
They use Duke and Duchess of Rothesay whenever they are north of the border, a style taken from Rothesay on the Isle of Bute. The September 17 stop was their first official visit to that town. Charles, as Duke of Rothesay, did go to the island on October 17, 2017, including a tour of Bute Fabrics, then one of the larger employers there.
When does the V&A Burberry trench display open?
The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon is a free display in the Prince Consort Gallery at V&A South Kensington from September 21, 2026, to January 3, 2027. It is built in three chapters, Invention, Craft and Creativity, and opens with Thomas Burberry’s cotton gabardine from 1879 before 19 runway looks from the past 25 years.
How much are Holland Cooper Jodhpur Jeans, and what sizes run?
The Jodhpur Jean is listed at £99 in denim and in chocolate. The cut is high-rise and skinny, in sizes 6 to 18, with petite, regular and tall lengths fitted to 28-inch, 30-inch and 32-inch legs. Some colourways on the site show last-few stock, with made-to-order pairs quoted at two to four weeks.
Who founded Holland Cooper, and where is it based?
Jade Holland Cooper started the company in 2008 after a year at agricultural college, selling tweed miniskirts from a stand at Badminton Horse Trials. The brand is headquartered in the Cotswolds in a 70,000-square-foot building the founder has described as a from-scratch investment, employs 120 people, and has a boutique in Cheltenham plus space in Harrods.
