Penguin Colony Turns Language Into Loot on the Ice
Origame Digital’s penguin horror is out on PC, and its word pickups plus end-game star chart turn the anti-expedition back into an expedition.
Penguin Colony landed on PC on October 16, 2026, a $14.99 horror game you play as a penguin that harvests human language. Origame Digital and publisher Fellow Traveller set it in 1939 Antarctica, where Nazis and Māori kaitiaki chase something old under the ice.
The studio asks you to wander like a bird with no quest log. Then it fills the snow with words and, at the end, a chart of every secret you walked past.
Penguin Colony Is Out on PC for $14.99
Fellow Traveller said the game is out now on Steam, GOG, and Humble. A Switch 2 edition is listed as TBA. Steam’s store page prices the base game at $14.99, marked down to $13.49 through October 30, and flags the build as Steam Deck Verified with a 2 GB install.
Lenval Brown, the narrator of Disco Elysium, reads the doomed human expedition. Interface text ships in English, Arabic, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, and Te Reo Māori, with full voice in English. Steam’s own mature-content note lists blood, gore, sudden violent deaths, and depictions of self-harm and suicide.
THE LAUNCH CARD
- PC date: October 16, 2026, on Steam, GOG, and Humble Store.
- List price: $14.99, with a 10% launch cut to $13.49 through October 30.
- Switch 2: TBA on Fellow Traveller’s product page, with no day attached.
- Voice: Lenval Brown on the human side of the ice.
A public demo ran with Steam Next Fest in June 2026, so a slice of the movement and the first human wreckage was already in players’ hands before launch day.
Language as the Only Loot
You hop, swim, and slide belly-first across ice that starts as huts and floes and turns into stone mazes, obelisks, and drops that feel stolen from an old console nightmare. Tap beside another bird and you leave your body for theirs. The open ground is the point. So are the pickups, which are not coins.
Glow-orbs dump English and Te reo Māori words into your run, often sitting next to the thing they name. Naphtali Faulkner, Origame Digital’s Ngāi Te Rangi director, has said he wants players to approach the story like a scientific expedition, with stretches everyone sees and stretches almost no one will. In a separate preview conversation he was blunter about the rhyme: by poking at glyphs and wreckage, you copy the Nazi dig.
That is the gag with teeth. The bird is supposed to be the local who does not need a flag. The loop still makes you a clerk with a sack of other people’s language.
WHAT YOU PICK UP
- Word orbs: English and Te reo Māori terms that sit on the ice like item lore.
- Human wreckage: camps, bodies, and speeches you are free to ignore or circle.
- Glyphs with no file tags: Faulkner said some image files were stripped of metadata so you have to read them in place.
- Bird bodies: a tap-swap that treats the colony, not one hero, as the mover.
Early sessions already split on that sack. Some players treat the words as the joke that makes the horror land. Others bounce off a short, awkward bird game that never becomes the shooter the Nazis on screen seem to want.
What the Kaitiaki Are Doing in 1939
Fellow Traveller sells cosmic horror through a penguin’s eyes, a reworking of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness and The Shadow Out of Time, set two years after the author’s death. In 1939 a Nazi party pushes south looking for an ancient power it can hang on race myth. A kaitiaki party, named in the publisher copy as the group that has done this for generations, tries to put the same thing back to sleep for another hundred years.
Faulkner has tied that plot to fake origin stories closer to home, including the old claim that Celtic settlers beat Māori to Aotearoa. The Nazis in the game, he said, invent a father race out of whatever they find and then call it proof.
They just make that up. The game’s story is about exploring how they do this and the tools and mechanisms that allow this colonial myth-making to happen.
Naphtali Faulkner, Origame Digital director
Brown’s voice is the first thing a lot of people clock, the same low register that carried Disco Elysium, now stuck to a man whose sense of time has already come apart. You hear him. You cannot save him. You can only waddle past a cannibal in a German coat while the speech about plunder keeps going.
Faulkner has also said that if you stop treating humans as the only people in a place, penguins are the locals in Antarctica, and every empire that drew lines on the ice looks briefly insane. The kaitiaki chapters, playable in bursts between the bird sections, are the other human answer: put the thing back in the box.
After Umurangi Generation, a Penguin Trilogy
Origame Digital is still a small Melbourne studio. Its first game, the photography work Umurangi Generation, came out in 2020 and won the Independent Games Festival’s Seumas McNally Grand Prize and Excellence in Narrative in 2021. Penguin Colony is the follow-up, framed on Steam as the first entry in a Shadows of Madness line. Faulkner has called that line a trilogy of Lovecraft ideas run through another lens, and has said some beats here are only doors for later games.
He told interviewers the first sketch arrived after watching Happy Feet with his daughter, because sliding on ice looked like a joy you could hang a whole game on. The project ran about two years full-time, mostly solo, with contractors and guest art that he has described as largely Indigenous. He has also said the body-swap is not a cute extra. It is the argument that a colony beats a chosen one, closer to hongi than to a lone investigator from Miskatonic.
THE ROAD TO THE ICE
- June 2, 2025: The Steam page goes live under app 3695930, still dated only as coming soon.
- September 18, 2025: A reveal trailer hits the Six One Indie Showcase, and Brown’s voice is already in it.
- June 6, 2026: Fellow Traveller posts a story trailer and a Steam demo ahead of Next Fest.
- October 16, 2026: The PC build ships, with Switch 2 still marked TBA.
The low-poly look is a choice, not a leftover. Faulkner has called the game a souped-up PlayStation 2 project, the sort of horror that leaves gaps instead of a quest marker. Wind stands in for a compass. Insight, in the Bloodborne sense, is in the design notes. How much of that systems talk survives a first waddle is the live argument on the store page.
The End Screen Charts Every Missed Word
After the credits, the game lays out a cosmological map, a zodiac of the lore you actually touched. It also shows the nodes you never reached. The publisher copy in the game frames that web as an attempt to get back “pre-social media secret finding and community storytelling.” Faulkner has said, more than once, that he would rather you not grind the set to 100%. Trade notes. Argue. Miss things on purpose.
He has also said some pieces are hidden well enough that he does not expect them on day one, a habit he dates to hanging around Dark Souls videos before the sequels arrived and watching one find rewrite the last one. That is a warm memory of a wiki era. It is also a completion screen.
A player who finished the campaign on launch day called it another narrative high-water mark from the Umurangi Generation team, the kind of claim that used to attach to 1000xRESIST from the same publisher. The map still sits there after the speech, a clean inventory of language you failed to bag. You can take Faulkner at his word and go talk to friends. You can also open a second file and start ticking stars. The design allows both, and the second one is the old human habit the story keeps putting on trial.
Waddle, Slide, Then Swap Birds
Movement is the other product. A stamina bar in the demo recalled Shadow of the Colossus, which made walking up ice a bad idea and sliding a good one. Different birds change the routes.
BIRDS YOU CAN BECOME
- Rockhopper: The jumper, used for ledges the Adelie body will not clear.
- Chick: Fits the small gaps, and cannot swim, per the Steam description.
- Chinstrap: Takes photographs, a nod to Pengi from Umurangi Generation.
- Any nearby adult: A tap trades bodies, so the run is a relay through the colony.
That relay is funny until it is not. One bird is a joke about scale, a beak in a city of Elder Things. A chain of birds is a group that was already on the ice before the flags arrived. Faulkner has said the later story uses that fact, including a lineage beat about who came from what. The playable kaitiaki, walking ground your penguin just crossed, talk over the same ruins in another register.
Steam’s First 32 Reviews Hit 84%
Steam’s store page lists 84% of 32 user reviews as Positive, a stack too small to treat as a verdict and large enough to show the split: some playtesters already talking in game-of-the-year terms, at least one refund after an hour. The deluxe pile is the other launch lever.
EDITIONS ON STEAM
| Pack | What it adds | Listed price |
|---|---|---|
| Penguin Colony | Base PC game | $14.99 |
| Launch cut | Same game, 10% off through October 30 | $13.49 |
| Soundtrack and commentary | Music plus over 2.5 hours of Faulkner’s notes | $6.99 |
| Deluxe bundle | Game plus the extra pack | $16.92 |
The extra pack is sold on its own as soundtrack and director’s commentary, with music from David Mason of Dredge, KOMMI, and Rachel Khan. Switch 2 remains TBA. Faulkner has already said the ice is only the first pass at this mythos, and that the best reading is the one players assemble together, incomplete on purpose.
Until that next game appears, the chart at the end of this one still lights up the words you did not collect. The penguin can waddle away. The map keeps the tally.
