HomePod 2 Gets Sound Glow but Surround Needs New Hardware

HomePod 2 is getting Sound Glow, Mac default audio, and four-speaker surround in software, but two of those features still need new Apple hardware.

Apple is adding Sound Glow, Mac default audio, and four-speaker surround to HomePod 2 through software, with no new full-size speaker in the October 13 home lineup. HomePod (2nd generation) still sells for $349. Four-speaker surround with the new $299 Apple TV 4K starts at $895.

The lights can ride on a speaker you already own. The living-room pitch still sells a new streaming box, and often more speakers.

The Free Update Comes With Price Tags

Apple used the HomePod mini 2 announcement on October 13 to describe the new tricks, then folded two of them onto the older full-size model. The HomePod 2 product page now promises Sound Glow in the same breath as Apple Music. The buy page lists surround sound with Apple TV 4K on both the $149 mini 2 and the $349 HomePod.

That is not a new woofer. HomePod 2 still has a 4-inch driver, five tweeters, room sensing, and the S7 chip it shipped with in 2023. The software is doing the selling, and each feature has a door that is not the speaker itself.

THE THREE FEATURES AND WHAT THEY NEED

Feature What the software adds What still sits off the speaker
Sound Glow Top mesh lights in album-art colors and pulses with bass and treble Voice control needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone on the latest software
Mac default speaker System audio, movies, games, and FaceTime without picking AirPlay each time A Mac desktop or laptop with Wi-Fi 6E or later
Four-speaker surround Front and rear pairs, with timing and levels tuned to the room Apple TV 4K (4th generation) plus four HomePod mini 2 or HomePod 2 speakers in matching pairs

Sound Glow is the one that can land on a shelf that is already paid for, as long as you do not need to bark commands at the light show. The Mac path is free only if the computer is new enough. Surround is a bundle, and Apple wrote the bundle in a footnote.

Sound Glow Paints the Mesh You Already Own

Apple’s HomePod 2 page now says the top lights up with colors that match your album artwork, pulsing in tune with the music. The mini 2 write-up is longer, and it is the version owners should expect if the two speakers share the feature.

With Sound Glow, the top of HomePod mini transforms into a visual canvas that glows and pulses in sync with the music, reacting in real time to bass and treble. The song’s album artwork from Now Playing generates a color-matched light experience that’s unique to every song, and users can pick a soundscape like rain to trigger bespoke animations for a soothing atmosphere.

Apple, HomePod mini 2 press release, October 13, 2026

HomePod 2 already has a large touch disc on top, which is why this is a software trick instead of a new lamp. The mesh can carry color. Voice control is the extra gate: Apple’s footnote says that part needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone running the latest software.

That split matters. If you only want the disc to follow a record sleeve, the speaker you bought in 2023 is the product. If you want to ask Siri to switch the animation to rain, you need a phone that already runs Apple Intelligence.

Newer Macs Can Treat HomePod as the System Speaker

AirPlay has sent Mac audio to a HomePod for years. You pick the speaker, you live with the delay, and you do it again after a restart. Apple’s new path is a default output, for a single HomePod or a stereo pair, covering movies, games, FaceTime, and the rest of the system.

The footnote is blunt. The feature works with HomePod mini 2 and HomePod 2 on Mac desktops and laptops with Wi-Fi 6E or later. Apple’s Wi-Fi 6E device list is the practical checklist, and it cuts off a lot of desks that still sit next to a HomePod.

MACS APPLE LISTS FOR WI-FI 6E

  • MacBook Pro: Models introduced in 2023 or later.
  • MacBook Air: Models introduced in 2024 or later, so a 2022 M2 Air stays on AirPlay.
  • MacBook Neo: Named on the same list.
  • Desktop Macs: iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro introduced in 2023 or later.

HomePod 2 itself still lists 802.11n Wi-Fi on its spec sheet. The speed bump Apple is asking for lives in the Mac, not in the cylinder. Older HomePod mini units can still take AirPlay. They cannot be set as the default speaker.

For a Mac mini under a monitor with poor speakers, this is the feature that changes the desk. For a 2022 Air, it is a footnote that says no.

What Four-HomePod Surround Sound Costs

Apple already let two HomePods sit beside a TV as a stereo pair, with Dolby Atmos and an Enhance Dialogue mode that pulls speech forward. The new mode is four speakers: two in front, two behind. Apple TV 4K (4th generation) is required, on the latest tvOS. Older Apple TV 4K boxes stay at two speakers.

The speakers have to be HomePod mini 2 or HomePod 2, in matching pairs for front and rear. Front can differ from rear. Four mini 2 units work. Four HomePod 2 units work. Two HomePod 2 speakers up front and two mini 2 speakers in back is the mix Apple shows. Original HomePod and original HomePod mini are out.

Firmware researcher pdfu, posting on October 16, said a Home Theater splash on iPhone sends setup through Apple TV, and that when a mix includes HomePod 2, the mini 2 units can only sit as the rear pair. That is a software reading, not an Apple sentence, and it is the first extra limit owners should test when the update lands.

Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, tied the mode to the new box.

Front and Rear Pairs Have to Match

Apple says the four speakers and the new Apple TV 4K recognize each speaker’s place in the room, then set timing and levels. There is no separate center channel and no wireless subwoofer in the announcement. The system is four matching-pair cylinders and a $299 streaming box, not a 5.1 pack from a soundbar shelf.

Stores get Apple TV 4K starting November 13. Apple priced that box at $299, or $49.83 a month for six months. HomePod mini 2 is $149 and reaches stores October 30. HomePod 2 is $349.

The Bill for an All-New Room

US LIST PRICE FOR THE FOUR-SPEAKER SETUPS

Speaker mix Speakers only With Apple TV 4K
Four HomePod mini 2 $596 $895
Two HomePod 2 and two mini 2 $996 $1,295
Four HomePod 2 $1,396 $1,695

If you already own two HomePod 2 speakers, the add-on is two mini 2 units and the new Apple TV, which is $597 before tax. That is the least painful path for people who bought a stereo pair in 2023. Anyone starting from zero is shopping in soundbar money, without a dedicated sub.

The Full-Size HomePod Apple Did Not Refresh

Apple killed the original HomePod in March 2021 and pointed people at HomePod mini. The gap lasted until January 18, 2023, when HomePod 2 arrived at $299, on sale February 3, 2023. The new one was shorter, with an edge-to-edge disc, an S7 chip, a U1 radio, a removable cord, and temperature and humidity sensing. It still looks like the 2018 cylinder.

On October 13, 2026, the home event put HomeView, HomePod mini 2, and Apple TV 4K on the table. The full-size speaker was a software slide. The store price is $349, $50 above the 2023 launch tag.

THE FULL-SIZE SPEAKER’S LONG PAUSE

  1. March 2021: Apple discontinues the original HomePod and leans on HomePod mini.
  2. January 18, 2023: HomePod 2 is announced at $299.
  3. February 3, 2023: HomePod 2 goes on sale.
  4. September 14, 2026: HomePod software 27.0 ships.
  5. October 13, 2026: Apple announces HomePod mini 2 and Apple TV 4K, and the HomePod 2 page gains Sound Glow and four-speaker surround.
  6. October 30, 2026: HomePod mini 2 is due in stores at $149, in pink, green, blue, white, and midnight.
  7. November 13, 2026: Apple TV 4K (4th generation) is due in stores at $299.

Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Home Product Marketing, sold the mini as the voice of the lineup, with Siri AI, new colors, and the theater setup. HomePod 2 is the leftover flagship: bigger bass, Spatial Audio, room sensing, still no successor.

Siri AI Stays a Mini Promise for Now

The question people keep putting on the big speaker is Siri AI. Apple attached that assistant to HomePod mini 2 in a future software update, in English at first in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the UK. The mini 2 announcement does not name HomePod 2 for that feature.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • Mini 2 path: Siri AI is listed for HomePod mini 2 in a later update, not on day one with the October 30 speaker.
  • HomePod 2 path: Apple’s public copy for the full-size model names Sound Glow, Mac default audio, and four-speaker surround, not Siri AI.
  • Phone gate: Personal context on the mini, and voice control for Sound Glow, still want an Apple Intelligence iPhone.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • A date for Siri AI on HomePod 2: Apple has not given one, and has not said the S7 speaker is excluded either.
  • The mix rule for rears: The splash-screen claim that mini 2 units drop to the back row beside HomePod 2 has not been confirmed in Apple’s footnotes.

Until Apple puts HomePod 2 on the Siri AI list, the full-size cylinder is getting lights, a Mac toggle, and a ticket into a four-speaker room. The conversational assistant is the product sitting on the $149 speaker that did get a new chip, the S10.

October 30 Is the Practical Deadline for 27.2

Apple has not posted a calendar day for Sound Glow on HomePod 2. It did say HomePod mini 2 is compatible with HomePod software 27.2, and that speaker is due in stores October 30, so 27.2 has to be real before those units leave a factory image. Firmware trackers logged HomePod software 27.0 in September, on September 14. The 27.2 beta had reached beta 3 by October 5.

iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, and macOS 27.2 have been in beta on the same train. The Mac default feature needs that Mac build as much as it needs the speaker build. Surround needs the new Apple TV, which does not arrive until November 13, so the four-speaker room cannot be a day-one October trick even if 27.2 ships with the mini.

If you own one HomePod 2 and you want the disc to follow album art, you are waiting on the same 27.2 drop as the mini 2 launch. If you want the Mac to treat that speaker as the system output, you also need a 2023-or-later machine on Apple’s Wi-Fi 6E list. If you want the theater mode Apple is advertising, you need four allowed speakers in two matched pairs and a fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, which is a $895 floor for an all-new mini 2 room and a $1,695 floor for four full-size HomePods.

The software is free. The room Apple is selling around it is not, and the full-size speaker that did not get replaced is the one expected to light up first.
