Diablo V Sells a Sanctuary Where Diablo Already Won

Blizzard set Diablo V in a Sanctuary the Lord of Terror already rules, due spring 2029, while Diablo IV keeps seasons and loses further expansions.

Blizzard dated Diablo V to spring 2029 at BlizzCon on September 12, and set it after the Lord of Terror has already seized Sanctuary. The numbered sequel is the first Diablo game that starts after the war is lost, while Diablo IV still has a new season on September 15 and an Amazon class pack in 2027.

Platforms were not named. The team called the project early, with regular public updates planned from 2027. The pitch is simple, and it cuts against 30 years of holding the line: the heroes failed, and Diablo won.

Westmarch Under the Lord of Terror

Official copy from the Forging the Next Era panel puts him in the city that used to be the human capital. Diablo has conquered Sanctuary as a stepping stone toward the High Heavens, and he now rules from Westmarch’s throne, turning people and souls into weapons for the Eternal Conflict. He is not a last-act boss. He shapes the map, the story, and the player’s route from the first hour.

Diablo has conquered Sanctuary, a stepping stone to invading the Heavens. Now from the throne of Westmarch, he wields Sanctuary’s people and souls as weapons in the Eternal Conflict.

The Diablo V Team, Forging the Next Era recap, Blizzard

You play the Heir to Westmarch and a survivor caravan, running through a kingdom that Hell has turned into an outpost. A hidden tie to Diablo makes that heir both a threat to him and easy to twist. Few humans got out. Some knelt. A few were raised into Dread Commanders, strong enough to stand with Hell’s own powers. The Western Continent sits at the center of that rule, and the land itself is not stable: terrain, points of interest, monsters, and rewards can change when you come back, because terror is still rewriting the ground.

Blizzard’s own question for the chapter is blunt. What must you become when the world has already fallen?

You Still Kill Diablo on September 15

The same opening ceremony that revealed that fallen world also sold the opposite fantasy for the live game. Diablo IV’s Season of Hell’s Legacy on September 15 is the 30-year party piece. Deckard Cain’s lost soul returns to walk players through a hunt for the Prime Evils. You face Baal, Mephisto, and Diablo, take splinters of their souls, and carry one of those splinters for a share of their power, with the usual warning that the gift has a price.

More than 130 million players have entered Sanctuary across the series, Blizzard said, and the season is built as a playable tour of old foes, places, and loot. The Diablo IV: Age of Hatred Collection also lands on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15, bundling the base game with Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred. A Netflix animated series set in this world is in development, with no studio, cast, or date attached.

THE ROAD FROM DIABLO IV

  1. June 6, 2023: Diablo IV launches on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
  2. October 8, 2024: Vessel of Hatred opens Nahantu and adds the Spiritborn.
  3. April 28, 2026: Lord of Hatred ships with Skovos, the Paladin, and the Warlock.
  4. September 12, 2026: BlizzCon’s opening ceremony reveals Diablo V for spring 2029.
  5. September 15, 2026: Season of Hell’s Legacy begins at 9:30 a.m. PT, and the Switch 2 collection goes live.
  6. First half of 2027: The Amazon class pack arrives in Diablo IV, with Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger, and Commander builds, plus the javelin as a new weapon type.
  7. Spring 2029: Diablo V is due, in a Sanctuary the Lord of Terror already holds.

So the anniversary week still asks you to put Diablo down in the current game, then immediately tells you the next numbered chapter is the one where that work did not stick.

100 Years Sit Between the Two Games

Diablo game director Brent Gibson told interviewers at BlizzCon that the events of Diablo V sit 100 years after Diablo IV. That gap is the escape hatch for anyone who heard “Diablo won” and assumed the live story was finished. It is also a destination. Every remaining season now plays out on a clock that ends in a fallen Westmarch, even if the team has not drawn the path beat by beat.

Gibson said the group is focused on Diablo IV seasons and on reaching Diablo V. In his account, Lord of Hatred closed the Story of Hatred around Mephisto, and the work now turns toward the Story of Terror. No further Diablo IV expansions are currently planned. Support is not being pulled: he said seasons will continue for a very long time, and that the century between the two games leaves room to keep telling stories while the sequel is built. Continuity matters to the team, he added, without a locked map of how each season will get there, because they want to watch how players respond as they go.

That split is the product. Diablo IV remains the place you log into through 2027, with a javelin Amazon still on the calendar. It is no longer the place new continents get sold as boxed expansions. The next big structural swing is the sequel, and the sequel’s first fact is that the old heroes are gone.

What Happens to Diablo IV After the Reveal?

A spring 2029 window is about two and a half years from the September 12 reveal, and almost six years after Diablo IV’s June 6, 2023 launch. For anyone still running seasonal characters, that is a long time to play a game whose next numbered fight has already been described, including the ending the live seasons are walking toward.

The sharper read of the wait is not that Blizzard is walking away tomorrow. It is that the live title now has a known ceiling. Seasons can still add bosses, splinters, Cube recipes, and a class pack. They cannot unwrite a sequel that begins with Diablo on the throne. If you want a new region the size of Nahantu or Skovos, the answer from this BlizzCon is that the team already told the Story of Hatred and is spending the big swings on Terror instead.

That is why the 2029 date landed heavier than a teaser usually does. Diablo IV is still getting a Switch 2 bundle and a 30-year season in the same breath as the sequel, which is the company trying to hold both crowds. The math underneath is less gentle. One game is the epilogue with seasons. The other is the occupation.

A Caravan Instead of Towns

The panel’s most concrete break from Diablo IV is civic. Towns and taken strongholds are gone as the safe spine of the map. Survival means assembling allies who travel with you through scorched ground, act as vendors, and carry their own scars. Side work, the team said, comes from that moving camp rather than from a notice board in a city that no longer exists.

RULES OF A FALLEN SANCTUARY

  • The throne: Diablo rules from Westmarch and is present from the start, not waiting at the end of a campaign.
  • The heir: You are tied to him in a way that makes you dangerous and easy to corrupt.
  • The road: A caravan replaces towns, with companions who sell, travel, and tell their own stories.
  • The odd pair: Early companions include a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a stranded Treasure Goblin looking for purpose in a world where greed has lost its use.
  • The ground: Maps, monsters, and rewards can change on return as Diablo keeps reshaping the Western Continent.

That last point is a reversal of Diablo IV’s more authored overworld. The team is going back to maps that rebuild themselves, including the open land, and it is tying that churn to the villain’s active rule rather than to a dungeon algorithm running in the background. Whether that feels like danger or like a loot reroll will be the fight once builds go out in 2027.

The Plague Knight Spreads Disease Then Eats It

Only three classes were shown, and the team called them the first of more. Two are old names with old jobs. One is new and mean in a way the series has not used as a full class.

THE FIRST THREE CLASSES

Class Status How it fights
Demon Hunter Returns (from Diablo III) Twin crossbows, strikes from shadow, leaps across the field
Monk Returns (from Diablo III) Fists plus holy power used to batter and smite
Plague Knight New Spreads disease and pestilence, then consumes it for power

The Plague Knight is the tell. Official language calls the class walking death in heavy armor, a fighter who poisons the ground and then eats that sickness. In a game about a world already rotting under Diablo, the new fantasy is not another holy order. It is someone who lives in the rot and uses it.

Loot is being aimed at Diablo II on purpose. The team wants items that are readable, memorable, and worth chasing for hundreds of hours. It is trying stat requirements on gear, with the public caveat that this is an experiment, not a lock. Larger items take more inventory space again. Sets are coming back. Crafting is described as deep, drawing on Lord of Hatred’s work, with Diablo II-style runes and runewords. Anyone who spent Diablo IV’s first year staring at a wall of affixes will hear that list as an apology. It is also a bet that the next numbered Diablo should feel like a hunt again, not like a seasonal pass with a boss at the end of the reward track.

Players Get Regular Looks Starting in 2027

Diablo V is still early, and Blizzard said so. The 2027 update cadence is the real near-term product: design notes, systems, and features as they harden, with the team arguing that showing work early lets players push the thing they actually want. Until then, the live game is Diablo IV, the Amazon pack is the next named class drop, and the sequel is a throne, a caravan, three classes, and a date.

The same ceremony put even later dates on other Blizzard worlds, including an open-world StarCraft shooter for spring 2030. Long dating is the house style this year. For Diablo it has a cost the others do not, because the live ARPG is still taking money for seasons while the sequel’s box already says those seasons end in failure.

The wait is the part that will age badly if 2027’s first builds look thin. Readable loot, changing maps, and a villain who never leaves the stage are the promises other action RPGs already use as their sales pitch, and announcing them two and a half years out invites a direct comparison long before anyone can play. People still in Diablo IV also want a clean offline path if the live servers ever thin out, which this reveal did not offer.

Until spring 2029, the Diablo you can actually launch is the one where Cain still has a job and the Prime Evils still die on a seasonal timer. The next numbered game is the one that starts after that job is over.

Numbers get particular attention here. A percentage in a business story is recomputed from the underlying figures before it goes live, a benchmark in a technology or gaming review is quoted with the conditions it was measured under, and a transfer fee or a lap time in the sports and auto pages is traced back to the club, the league or the timing sheet that published it. The same rule covers news, science, entertainment, lifestyle and travel: if a figure cannot be tied to a filing, a dataset, a transcript or a test Harry ran himself, it does not appear.
