Gemini Call for Me Puts Pixel 11 on the Business Line

Google’s Call for Me lets Gemini phone shops from a Pixel 11, yet it must survive the hang-up habits Google spent years teaching.

Google opened Call for Me on September 24, 2026, so Gemini can phone US shops from a Pixel 11. The early preview is limited to paid Google AI subscribers who also installed the Phone by Google public beta. Gemini dials your own phone number, names itself as an AI assistant, and keeps a recording.

That puts a synthetic voice on a line Google spent years teaching people to treat as suspect.

Gemini Dials From Your Number, Then Talks

You open the Gemini app on the Pixel and ask it to handle your everyday phone calls, or you type @Call for me. Google’s help page uses a dinner prompt (call a restaurant and book a table for two at 7 PM tomorrow) and a quote prompt for a dry cleaner on Main Street. Gemini then shows the number it will hit and the details it plans to share, including your name and contact info, before you tap Call for Me.

The bot uses the same voice as Gemini Live, even if the voice you picked for chat has an accent. It can work an automated menu, wait through hold music, and talk to the person who finally picks up. You follow a live transcript in the Gemini app, or you turn the audio on and listen with your microphone muted. Tap Take over and Gemini says you are coming on, unmutes you, and leaves the call.

Asking AI to speak on your behalf is a big step that requires genuine trust. That’s why we built this experience around user control.

Google, Call for Me preview

When the call ends, a notification points you to a summary in Gemini. The Phone app keeps the full transcript and the recording. Standard carrier rates apply because the call rides your mobile network, and for now Gemini will only dial US numbers. Google calls the rollout an early experiment and says it is starting small to get the experience right.

A Google spokesperson said the company wants testers to try messy cases, including accents and noisy rooms. If a shop cannot do what you asked, the company says Gemini will hang up politely. You can also hand it a number, which matters for a barber or tattoo artist with almost no web presence. Gemini will try to find the listing first.

Who Gets Call for Me on Pixel 11?

The preview is for adults in the United States on a Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, or Pixel 11 Pro Fold with a US SIM, English as the device language, the latest Gemini app, a paid Google AI plan, and the public beta of Phone by Google. Google is rolling access in stages, so even that group may not see the button yet.

WHAT YOU NEED BEFORE GEMINI WILL DIAL

Gate Rule
Age and place 18 or over, and living in the United States
Hardware Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL, or 11 Pro Fold with a US SIM
Software Latest Gemini app, English device language, Phone by Google public beta
Account Signed into Gemini, with a paid Google AI subscription
Numbers US phone numbers only

Some Pixel 11 Pro, Pro XL, and Pro Fold buyers can redeem six months of Google AI Pro, an offer Google lists through October 31, 2027. The base Pixel 11 still needs a paid plan. Using the feature also means accepting extra terms, including the Gemini Apps Agentic Calling Additional Terms of Service. Google announced the Pixel 11 lineup on August 12, 2026, and put the phones on sale on August 20, so this preview arrived 35 days after the hardware went on sale.

The Phone App That Taught People to Hang Up

The same Phone by Google app already screens unknown inbound callers and asks them why they rang. Hold for Me waits through hold music after you placed a call, then pings you when a person is back. Direct My Call puts automated menu choices on screen so you can tap past the recording. Scam Detection warns you when the speech on the line looks like a con.

In June 2026, Android added fake call detection for impersonation scams, a silent handshake meant to catch a cloned voice when both sides use Phone by Google. Pixel owners have been trained, on purpose, to treat a strange voice as a problem until it proves otherwise.

Call for Me walks the other way. It places an outbound AI voice on a personal mobile number, so caller ID looks like a customer, not a call center. Then the clerk hears a bot that says it is Google’s assistant on a recorded line. People who hate hold music will love that handoff. People who pick up unknown calls for a living have spent years learning to dump anything that sounds automated.

Google says the calls represent real customers doing real transactions, and that it will “respect the time of the neighborhood shops and front-desk staff answering the phone.” The hang-up risk is still built into the product. If the person on the other end treats Gemini like every other robocall, the patio table never gets booked.

Duplex’s Second Life After Assistant’s Exit

Google first showed this trick in 2018, when Duplex booked restaurant tables with a voice full of ums. Duplex on the Web, which filled in retail sites and tickets, was shut down in December 2022 so the company could focus on the voice side. Hold for Me and Direct My Call grew out of that work. The restaurant-calling service itself was later shuttered.

The older assistant is now leaving phones. Google began removing Google Assistant on Android on September 4, 2026, a shift the company said could take a few weeks per device. Twenty days later, Gemini inherited the job Duplex made famous, this time as a paid Pixel 11 preview rather than a free Assistant trick.

FROM DUPLEX TO CALL FOR ME

  1. 2018: Google shows Duplex at I/O, booking restaurant tables by phone with a conversational voice.
  2. December 2022: Duplex on the Web shuts down so the company can focus on voice calling.
  3. November 25, 2025: Search in the US starts placing agentic calls to local shops and emailing you a summary.
  4. September 4, 2026: Google begins removing Google Assistant from Android phones, watches, and paired headphones.
  5. September 24, 2026: Call for Me opens as an early Pixel 11 preview in the US.

The through-line is control. Duplex ran on a narrow script. Call for Me is a large language model that can share personal details you approve, then stay on the line until the task is done or you grab the handset. Google is explicit that this is still a test, not a finished assistant for every Android phone.

Front Desks Get an Opt-Out and a Daily Cap

The person who answers is the one Google cannot enroll. Gemini is cheap to send on a fishing trip for stock, prices, and open tables. A shop still pays with a human’s minutes. That mismatch is why the help page spends as much time on brakes as it does on bookings, and why a bot that never gets bored can become a new kind of hold music for the clerk.

GUARDS ON THE OTHER END OF THE LINE

  • The opening line: Gemini starts every call by saying it is an AI assistant from Google, calling on a recorded line on your behalf, and it states your name.
  • The recording: The Phone app stores the transcript and the audio, and the other party is told the line is recorded.
  • The opt-out: Anyone who does not want these automated calls can opt out of automated Gemini calls and later opt back in on the same page.
  • The daily cap: Google sets a daily limit on how many calls Gemini can place for you, then makes you wait until the next day, though it has not published the number.
  • The takeover: You can cancel before the call connects, listen live, or take over, after which Gemini leaves.

Those brakes will matter if the preview escapes the Pixel 11 club. One user can fire off many asks in a day. Without a cap, a hardware-store clerk becomes unpaid search results. People who already live with AI outbound calls treat that traffic as a nuisance, which is the exact reflex Google is betting a clear disclosure can overcome.

Why Gemini Cannot Sell, Pay, or Call 911

Google bars the calls that would turn this into a sales engine or a records leak. Gemini cannot place emergency calls such as 911, cannot complete payments or read out card numbers, cannot relay Social Security numbers, passwords, or health information, and cannot be used to sell products or services. Those limits sit in the help page, not in a slogan.

On February 8, 2024, the Federal Communications Commission said TCPA applies to AI-generated voices, treating them as an “artificial or prerecorded voice,” so those calls generally need the called party’s prior express consent. The ruling (FCC-24-17) was adopted on February 2, 2024. Call for Me is built as a user-started errand to a business, with an AI disclosure in the first breath and a ban on telemarketing. That design is Google’s answer to a rule written for spam and scams, not a legal stamp on the preview.

Emergency services stay off limits even if you type the digits. If a shop cannot help, Google says the bot should bow out instead of looping the clerk. The company also says it wants the tests to cover thick accents and noisy rooms, which is another way of admitting the model will get some of these conversations wrong.

November’s Shopping Calls Were a Dry Run

On November 25, 2025, Google already let Search users in the US ask Google to call local businesses about nearby stock and discounts. You added “near me” to a product query, answered a few questions, and chose a text or email summary. Google placed the calls. You never heard them. That page was updated on July 24, 2026.

Call for Me puts you on the same idea with a speaker and a mute button. You can hear the clerk, jump in, and finish the booking in your own voice. It is also narrower: one Pixel generation, one country, one language, a beta Phone app, and a paid Google AI plan. The older Search bot could shop several stores while you waited for an email. This one occupies a single line you own.

The early preview will show whether a disclosed AI, calling from a real mobile number, can finish a haircut booking before the line goes dead.

Numbers get particular attention here. A percentage in a business story is recomputed from the underlying figures before it goes live, a benchmark in a technology or gaming review is quoted with the conditions it was measured under, and a transfer fee or a lap time in the sports and auto pages is traced back to the club, the league or the timing sheet that published it. The same rule covers news, science, entertainment, lifestyle and travel: if a figure cannot be tied to a filing, a dataset, a transcript or a test Harry ran himself, it does not appear.
