Apple’s Foldable Gives Samsung the Recognition It Dreaded
Samsung foldable owners shrugged at the $1,999 iPhone Duo, the phone that may finally make their devices recognizable.
On September 9, 2026, Apple unveiled the $1,999 iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, and the people who have actually lived with folding screens treated the reveal as a rerun. Samsung owners have carried book-style foldables since 2019, often as the only non-iPhone in the room, and they heard a launch built from jobs their cover screens and hinges have done for years.
That shrug is real. So is the trap inside it. A folding phone that strangers finally recognize is the social proof those owners wanted, and it is also how a seven-year Samsung habit becomes, in public, an iPhone.
A $1,999 iPhone That Opens Like a Passport
Apple priced the 256GB Duo at $1,999 in star white and night sky, with 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB behind it. Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on October 16 in more than 70 countries and regions, phones arrive October 23, and 28 more markets follow on October 30.
Closed, the handset is built to the size of a passport, with a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR panel that Apple says holds 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. Open, a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina display is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max, and both panels share the same aspect ratio so a video does not jump shape when the book opens. Peak outdoor brightness is listed at 3000 nits. The A20 Pro chip, a dual-battery pack, and an IP68 rating sit behind a grade-5 titanium shell. Touch ID is in the side button. Face ID is not.
John Ternus, Apple’s CEO, sold the format as a clean sheet. At the event he said other foldables “just feel like two phones awkwardly stuck together.” The press text went further.
iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone.
John Ternus, CEO, Apple newsroom, September 9, 2026
That line about the most transformational change to iPhone is the part Samsung’s customers cannot hear without laughing. Split-screen apps, a cover display that previews a shot, a hinge that props the phone like a mini laptop, and a crease Apple now promises to hide with nano-texture glass are the daily grammar of a Galaxy Z Fold. Apple still added named tricks the Fold crowd has not had in iOS. Kid Cue plays Peanuts clips on the outer panel to hold a child’s gaze. Duo Preview puts the live viewfinder on the cover so the subject can pose. Smart Take lets on-device models fire the shutter when people look ready. Apple Pencil with USB-C is due later in 2026. Netflix, Zoom, and Slack are already listed as apps using the extra sheet of glass.
Hands-on figures put the Duo at 254 grams, 11.3 mm thick folded and 5.2 mm open. That is heavier and thicker than Samsung’s current book fold. The price, though, sits in the same band.
THE $1,900 BOOK FOLD
| Phone | Starting price | Inner display | Outer display | On sale | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | $1,999 | 7.6-inch | 5.4-inch | October 23, 2026 | |
| Galaxy Z Fold 8 | $1,899 | 7.6-inch | 5.5-inch | August 7, 2026 | |
| Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra | $2,099 | 8.0-inch | 6.5-inch | August 7, 2026 |
Liz Lee, associate director at Counterpoint Research, called the $1,999 sticker, about $100 above the Fold 8 and $100 below the Ultra, a bold place to land for a first foldable iPhone. The hinge is listed at more than 100 parts, with a magnet array to snap it shut. A Duo case is $79. The folio with kickstand is $129.
Samsung Spent Seven Years Thinning the Hinge
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Fold on February 20, 2019, then delayed shipping after review units failed, and put the phone on sale that September near $2,000. Koh Dong-jin, then head of the mobile business, later said the company sold 400,000 to 500,000 units that year, walking back a million-unit claim. Royole had already sold an outward-folding FlexPai in late 2018. Samsung is the brand that kept going after the first screens cracked.
The work shows up as grams and millimeters, not slogans. Samsung’s own history of the series tracks a slow diet from a brick that barely fit a jacket.
HOW THE FOLD GOT LIGHTER
- 2019: The original Galaxy Fold weighed 276 grams, 15.7 to 17.1 mm folded and 6.9 to 7.6 mm open.
- 2020: Galaxy Z Fold2 introduces Flex Mode and a hideaway hinge, at 282 grams.
- 2021: Galaxy Z Fold3 is the first water-resistant Fold, at 271 grams.
- 2022: Galaxy Z Fold4 drops to 263 grams after a lighter linear hinge.
- 2023: Galaxy Z Fold5’s Flex Hinge takes folded thickness to 13.4 mm and weight to 253 grams.
- July 22, 2026: Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra are announced; sales begin August 7. The Fold 8 is listed around 201 grams, 9.7 mm folded and 4.5 mm open. The Ultra is 215 grams, with an 8.0-inch inner panel.
That is eight numbered Fold generations across seven years, 2019 through 2026. Hee-Cheul Moon, a Samsung research manager, said other brands entering the market made the company proud that the value it pioneered was “being acknowledged and recognized.” He also named the metric Seoul still thinks Apple missed.
The key to providing the highest customer value in this market is all about the weight of the device. As you know, it’s not easy.
Hee-Cheul Moon, Samsung research manager
On those numbers the Duo is about 53 grams heavier than the Fold 8. Samsung’s site now bills the Fold 8 as its lightest Fold. Apple’s first try is still a dense slab of titanium, batteries, and a vapor chamber, and it is thicker when shut. The people who already own Folds will feel that in a pocket before they feel iOS 27’s side-mounted dock.
The Leftovers Line From Samsung Mobile US
Hours after the keynote, Samsung Mobile US posted as if it were a fan account with a legal team. The feed did not name Apple. It did not need to.
Let us know when you're done reheating our leftovers 😉

THE THREE-POST ROAST
- The leftovers: “Let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers.”
- The shrug: “So far, so same,” tagged #ItsTimeToSwitch.
- The extra fold: “Making us wait? Fine. We’ll be over here, folding 3 ways.”
Billboards in Seoul, Tokyo, and London ran a “Welcome to Foldables” line that framed Apple as a student arriving after the exam. The joke landed because it was true on hardware history and cheap on what actually moves a phone buyer. Replies treated the tone as stan-account energy, and Apple loyalists answered that being first is not the same as being finished, especially on creases, cases, and the software people already pay for. A circulating “internal hinge report” claiming a four-part Apple hinge against dozens of Samsung parts was tagged as false; Apple’s own note says the Duo hinge uses more than 100 components, and no public fold-cycle scorecard matches those viral figures.
The sharper split is simpler than the memes. Samsung has the years in the hinge. Apple has the group chat. A Fold owner who has already trained friends to tolerate a green bubble does not win that argument by pointing at Flex Mode.
Why Galaxy Fold Owners Still Go Unrecognized
Rasheed Richmond has owned several Samsung foldable phones, and it has been a lonely way to carry a flagship. He is typically the only non-iPhone user at work meetings and social gatherings. Worse, people do not even recognize the device. That is the part the leftovers posts cannot fix with a wink.
For years the object in his hand read as a broken tablet, a prototype, or a novelty from a trade-show floor. Friends asked what happened to his phone. Strangers did not ask at all. The iMessage split in the United States already trained those rooms to treat Android as a lesser guest. A folding Android phone stacked a second confusion on top: even the hardware did not parse as a finished product.
Apple’s event changes the social script without changing Richmond’s inbox. Once a folding slab is something you can buy at an Apple Store, a stranger finally has a name for it. The name they will use is iPhone. Cover-screen cameras, split apps, and a phone that sits tented on a cafe table stop being Samsung trivia and become “the new iPhone thing,” including for people who will never leave iOS. Some Fold owners already concede that Apple, arriving late with years of other people’s drop tests to study, may make the software feel less like two phones taped together. They are less ready to watch their own years of cracked inner screens get filed under someone else’s origin story.
That is why the unimpressed pose is brittle. The insult they want is that Apple copied homework. The outcome they get is that the homework becomes required reading, with Apple’s logo on the cover.
25% of Foldables, and No Units Shipped Yet
Counterpoint Research’s August 2026 update, issued days before the event, still has Samsung in front and Apple walking into second place without a single Duo in a customer’s pocket. Global foldables are on track for 100 million cumulative foldable shipments by the end of 2026, eight years after the category’s awkward start. The format is still about 2 percent of all smartphones. Prices remain in a different universe from a slab phone, and that has not closed.
COUNTERPOINT’S 2026 SPLIT
- Samsung: 38 percent of global foldable shipments, still first.
- Apple: up to 6 million units and a 25% share, in a short, supply-limited window after October 23.
- Huawei: 22 percent, third, with most of that weight in China.
- 2027: foldable shipments up 37 percent, the fastest rise since 2022, with Apple’s share modeled around 40 percent once it has a full year.
Those are forecasts, not receipts. Initial Duo supply is expected to stay tight, so the 25% figure already assumes Apple converts a huge slice of a small, expensive niche with only a few selling months. If the model is even roughly right, Samsung keeps the volume crown in 2026 and loses the story of the product. Huawei can lead on paper inside China and still not own the phrase “foldable phone” in a US meeting. Motorola and Honor get squeezed in the same tables, because a category that was a three-brand specialty starts to look like an iPhone upgrade path.
For Samsung’s mobile group, the ugly version of success is this: foldables finally grow, Apple takes the new buyers who would never have installed One UI, and the people who already own a Fold keep buying Folds. The company still sells panels, still sells Flips, still sells a tri-fold to the few who want a 10-inch sheet in a pocket. It does not get to be the default name on the hinge.
Korean Buyers Picked the Fold 8 After the Keynote
The first hard sales read after September 9 did not go Apple’s way, because Apple is not selling the Duo yet. In Korea, telecom industry figures relayed on September 17 showed Galaxy Z Fold 8 sales up about 10 percent in the week after the Duo unveiling, compared with the week before. Yonhap’s account is that some shoppers who had delayed a purchase, waiting to see Apple’s phone, then chose the Fold 8.
Price helps explain the pivot. The 256GB Duo is 3.29 million won ($2,380) in Korea. The 256GB Fold 8 is 2.28 million won, a gap of 1.01 million won, more than a million won and much wider than the $100 spread in the United States. The 2TB Duo is listed at 5.09 million won. For a buyer who wanted a folding screen and already lived in Samsung’s stores, the keynote removed the last reason to wait, then the local price list removed the reason to switch.
That bump is one country and one week, not a verdict on 2027. It still fits the irony better than the roast does. Samsung spent the event calling Apple a copy shop. Some of its customers used Apple’s copy as a permission slip to buy the original, while it is still cheaper at home and still in stock. The Duo, unseen in those shops until late October, already did Samsung a favor it will not put on a billboard.
Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo still open October 16. Until then the folding phone most people can actually hold is a Galaxy, and the folding phone most people can now name is an iPhone.
