Musumeci Beats Mitchell Without a Finish at UFC BJJ 11

Mikey Musumeci won a 15-minute decision over Bryce Mitchell at UFC BJJ 11, while Mason Fowler kept his title on a split draw.

Mikey Musumeci beat Bryce Mitchell by unanimous decision in the UFC BJJ 11 main event on Thursday, September 24, at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. The bantamweight champion moved up to featherweight and still could not tap the UFC fighter through three five-minute rounds.

In the co-main event, light heavyweight champion Mason Fowler kept his belt after a split draw with Nick Rodriguez, a result that appeared to surprise both men.

Fifteen Minutes and No Tap From Mitchell

Musumeci came in on four straight submissions. Mitchell came in 19-3 in the UFC, with 10 of those wins by tap, and this was his UFC BJJ debut. Referee Vitor Ribeiro watched them work the Bowl for the full 15 minutes of Bowl grappling, and the judges never had to hunt for a winner even though the scores stayed in the desk.

Round 1 settled into Musumeci’s guard under Mitchell’s top pressure, then flipped when Musumeci used a leglock to sweep. He locked a D’Arce that had Mitchell gasping, switched to a guillotine, and still lost the hold. At the 10-second clapper he arm-dragged Mitchell on the Bowl’s slope and finished the round on a takedown.

Mitchell skipped the low-five to start round 2 and tried to stay heavy. Musumeci swept again, threatened, and could not isolate an arm. Round 3 opened dirty, Mitchell rubbing his head into Musumeci’s face until Ribeiro broke them. Musumeci jumped a flying triangle. Mitchell slammed him into the mat.

William Tackett, Musumeci’s teammate, talked him onto the back. A body triangle, a rear-naked try, an armbar. Mitchell stayed compact. Sean Strickland, the former UFC middleweight champion working Mitchell’s corner, kept talking to the crowd while his fighter scrambled. Mitchell shot one last time in the closing seconds and ran out of clock.

I couldn’t implement the aggressive strategy that I wanted to. He used (leglocks) for sweeps, and could’ve really hurt one of my legs if he wanted to.

Bryce Mitchell, after UFC BJJ 11

Mitchell called the rest of the match survival mode. He also called Musumeci scrambly and sticky. The judges raised Musumeci’s hand. They did not read numbers.

Musumeci Parked the Leg Locks and Still Won

The booking started as a style argument. Mitchell had spent the summer saying Musumeci would not wrestle and liked to play off his back. Musumeci answered by offering a match with pieces of his own game taken out, and Mitchell, who said he had not watched the film, took it.

THE LIMITS MUSUMECI PUT ON HIMSELF

  • Guard pulls: He said he would not pull guard or scoot on his seat against a wrestler.
  • Leglock taps: He said he would not finish with the heel-hook game that built his title run.
  • The catch: Sweeps off those same entries stayed legal, and he used them.

The first leglock sweep drew boos, because the APEX crowd thought he had broken the deal. He had not finished with it. He had used it to climb on top, which is how a 135-pound champion spends 15 minutes with a 145-pound UFC fighter and never hears a tap.

Mitchell had said before the match that he did not want a clock. He wanted Musumeci to tap, and he talked about a twister, because he wanted the room to stop treating him as a curiosity. He got the minutes instead. Musumeci got the decision, and the four-submission streak is over.

A Split Draw That Left the Champion Surprised

Grappling regulars had already decided the real match was the co-main. Fowler, the UFC BJJ light heavyweight champion, was making a third defense. Rodriguez, the CJI heavyweight champion out of B-Team, was the man who had already beaten him.

They first met at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 7 in 2024, a match with no weight limit, and Rodriguez won it 6-0 on points. This time the number was 205 pounds, a cut for Rodriguez and a home for Fowler. Fowler retains the 205-pound title because the judges called a split draw, not because he left the Bowl with a win.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • Round 1: Fowler pulled guard, took the back, and forced Rodriguez to defend through a long scramble before the pace died late.
  • Round 2: Rodriguez punished an omoplata sweep, reached half guard, and chased a choke at the clapper while Fowler spread his arms to show the judges he was safe.
  • Round 3: Rodriguez shot early, passed to mount and side control, then mounted again with a minute left and locked a choke that Fowler survived.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • The cards: UFC did not read round scores, so the split remains a black box.
  • The rematch: Nobody in the Bowl announced a fourth meeting, even though the series now sits 1-0-1.

Fowler stood at the horn and clapped, which the UFC recap read as a man who thought the belt had just left. Then the draw was announced, and both athletes looked stunned. A lot of the room had Rodriguez up 2-1 on position and that late choke. The champion still drove home with the strap.

Why a Split Draw Leaves Fowler Champion

UFC BJJ matches run three rounds of five minutes inside the Bowl, a sloped pit built to keep people from backing out. If nobody taps, three judges use a 10-point must scoring rules sheet. A close round is 10-9. A round of long, one-way control is 10-8. A round that almost ends the match can be 10-7.

The criteria stack in a fixed order: attacks that can finish the match, then the starts of takedowns, passes and sweeps, then who held the position. Defense does not score. That is why Lucas Norat could survive armbars, a kimura and a triangle later in the night and still lose a unanimous decision to Pedro Machado. He never got paid for staying in the fight.

A split draw is the ugly child of that math. One judge can have Fowler in the first round by enough, another can have Rodriguez in the last two, and a third can split the difference. Under a champion-retains custom, the belt does not move on a tie. Fowler’s third defense will live in the record as a hold, not a win, which is a cold way to leave a rematch that was supposed to settle 2024.

Three Finishes Came Off the UFC BJJ Open

The main card streamed on UFC Fight Pass at 9 p.m. ET, with two prelims earlier. The official finish times from Las Vegas show the taps clustered away from the two matches that sold the show. Eight bouts, three submissions, four unanimous decisions, one draw.

THE UFC BJJ 11 CARD

Match Weight Result
Mikey Musumeci vs Bryce Mitchell Featherweight Musumeci, unanimous decision, 15:00
Mason Fowler (c) vs Nick Rodriguez Light heavyweight title Split draw, Fowler retains
Aurelie Le Vern vs Rana Willink Featherweight Le Vern, unanimous decision
Jay Rodriguez vs Kevin Beuhring Middleweight Rodriguez, inverted D’Arce, R2 2:54
Pedro Machado vs Lucas Norat Light heavyweight Machado, unanimous decision
Jordan Holy vs Ryan Elgarico Jr. Featherweight Holy, unanimous decision
Mason Stritzel vs Sebastian Zazueta Bantamweight Stritzel, inside heel hook, R2 4:06
Daniel Deeder vs Kolby Gonzalez Welterweight Deeder, kimura, R3 2:20

Jay Rodriguez, Nick’s brother, told people he would win with an inverted D’Arce and then did it at 2:54 of round 2, after referee Jason Herzog stood them up from a slow guard. He asked next for Ronaldo Junior and the 185-pound title. Le Vern, a former women’s featherweight champion, went the distance in a rebound from her title loss to Rebeca Lima at UFC BJJ 7.

The two prelims belonged to the new UFC BJJ Open pipeline. Mason Stritzel is 18. He took an Open in Chicago, got this booking, and heel-hooked Zazueta at 4:06 of round 2. Daniel Deeder needed until 2:20 of round 3, then folded Gonzalez’s left arm in a kimura so tight the opener’s own account posted it as a break. Gonzalez did not tap until the elbow had already gone to a place elbows do not go. The celebration after that one did not land clean.

The Face of UFC BJJ Wants MMA Now

Musumeci is the athlete UFC stood up when this product launched. He took the inaugural bantamweight championship at UFC BJJ 1 on June 25, 2025, finishing Rerisson Gabriel with a heel hook in round 3, then kept the belt at UFC BJJ 3 on October 2, 2025, with a Mikey Lock, a modified heel hook, at 3:01 of round 1 against Keven Carrasco. Thursday was a non-title match at 145 pounds, and he still used it to say he is about done at 135 and wants MMA, because the gritty UFC type is more fun to hold than a pure grappler.

THE ROAD INTO THIS CARD

  1. 2024: Nick Rodriguez beats Mason Fowler 6-0 at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 7, no weight limit.
  2. June 25, 2025: UFC BJJ 1 opens, and Musumeci wins the first 135-pound title.
  3. June 4, 2026: Fowler retains at UFC BJJ 9 with a rear-naked choke, and Rodriguez, now at 205, asks for the belt.
  4. September 24, 2026: Musumeci wins a 15-minute decision; Fowler’s title fight ends in a split draw.

The promotion did not wait long to ask the next question on its own account.

A body this good at jiu-jitsu can get bored of tapping specialists. That is the generous read of a champion who just spent 15 minutes on an MMA wrestler and still wants punches in the mix. The colder read is simpler. A frame built for heel hooks and Bowl walls does not automatically live with calf kicks and right hands, and Ryan Hall already ran that experiment in the cage. Musumeci has the decision. Fowler has the belt. Thursday’s two biggest matches did not give either man a finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Musumeci vs Mitchell a Title Fight?

No. UFC BJJ lists Musumeci’s belt at 135 pounds, and Thursday’s match was a featherweight bout at 145 so Mitchell did not have to come all the way down. Tapology lists both men at 5 feet 10 inches, so the size gap was weight and muscle, not height, and the 135-pound title stayed on the shelf.

How Do UFC BJJ Judges Score a Round?

Each round is 10-9 unless one athlete is clearly in charge (10-8) or spends the round on the verge of a stoppage (10-7). Finish attempts sit at the top of the sheet, then takedowns, passes and sweeps, then control time, which is why stalling from a safe position is a bad bet in the Bowl.

What Was the First Fowler vs Rodriguez Result?

Rodriguez won 6-0 on points at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 7 in 2024 when there was no weight limit. Fowler has since won the light heavyweight title and defended it, including a rear-naked choke over Devhonte Johnson at UFC BJJ 9, so Thursday was the first time they met with a 205-pound belt in play.

When Did UFC BJJ Launch?

The first numbered card, UFC BJJ 1, ran on June 25, 2025, after a Road to the Title series modeled on The Ultimate Fighter. Musumeci coached on that show, then headlined the opener, and UFC BJJ 11 on September 24, 2026, was the eleventh card in the same Bowl at the Meta APEX.

Musumeci leaves Las Vegas with a decision and a cage question. Fowler leaves with a belt he clapped away at the horn. The finishes on this card belonged to Jay Rodriguez, an 18-year-old Open graduate, and a kimura that did not wait for the tap.
