The Momentum 5 Changes How Long $400 Headphones Last

Sennheiser’s Momentum 5 pairs 57-hour playback with a screwdriver-swap cell, a longer lease than sealed Sony and Apple flagships still sell.

Sennheiser’s Momentum 5 lists at $399.95 with up to 57 hours of playback and a battery you can swap with a Phillips screwdriver. That is the part Sony and Apple still refuse to sell on their sealed flagships, and it is the part a $400 pair actually lives or dies on after year three.

Hands-on listening found the 57-hour rating held up, with a 10-minute charge adding up to seven hours. The cups still feel less plush than Sony’s WH-1000XM6 or Apple’s AirPods Max 2, and they sit heavier than the XM6. The second-order cost of those sealed rivals is a dead cell with no door.

Fifty-Seven Hours Is the Easy Part

Sennheiser rates the Momentum 5 at up to 57 hours with ANC on, tested on an iPhone at mid volume. That is nearly double Sony’s official music figure and nearly three times Apple’s. A full charge takes about two hours.

The cell is a 700 mAh pack, 3.7 V and 2.59 Wh, in the left cup. The older Momentum 4 was rated at 60 hours with a sealed battery, so the new pair gives up three hours on paper and gains a door. Sony’s US store lists the WH-1000XM6 at $459.99. Apple lists AirPods Max 2 at $549.

FLAGSHIP BATTERY MATH

Headphones US list price Claimed playback Weight Battery
Sennheiser Momentum 5 $399.95 57 hours, ANC on 290 g User-replaceable, 700 mAh
Sennheiser Momentum 4 Built-in predecessor 60 hours, ANC on About 293 g Sealed
Sony WH-1000XM6 $459.99 30 hours NC on, 40 hours off 254 g Sealed
Apple AirPods Max 2 $549 20 hours with ANC 386.2 g Sealed

Sony’s support sheet puts continuous music at a maximum of 30 hours with noise canceling on and 40 hours with it off, with a full charge of about 3.5 hours. Apple’s spec sheet gives AirPods Max 2 up to 20 hours of listening time with ANC, and about 1.5 hours from a five-minute charge. The Momentum 5 is 36 grams heavier than the XM6 and 96.2 grams lighter than Max 2.

A Phillips Screwdriver Is the Real Spec

Sennheiser’s US product page treats the door as the point of the 57-hour pack. The company says every battery wears out, and that owners can swap this one at home with no service center. iFixit notes the pack is held by fasteners, with no adhesive, in the left earcup of a metal-and-plastic shell.

Will you come to love these headphones? We’re betting on it. But nothing is forever; every battery will some day wear out. Which is why we made it so you can replace this one yourself when needed. No service center required.

The official how-to, posted 5 August 2026, is short. Power the headphones off. Pinch and pull the left cushion. Loosen four screws. Move the baffle aside without detaching it. Note the harness colors, then pinch and wiggle the connector free. Sennheiser says to use official spare parts only.

THE LEFT-CUP SWAP

  1. Power off: Shut the headphones down before you touch the cushion or the screws.
  2. Left cushion: Pinch and pull the pad off the cup that holds the cell.
  3. Four screws: Use a compact Phillips driver on the four fasteners, then shift the baffle aside.
  4. Harness: Match the color coding, pinch the connector, and pull it free with a gentle wiggle.

That sequence is the ownership feature Sony and Apple do not ship. Sennheiser has already extended replaceable batteries in the Momentum True Wireless 5 to the buds and the case. The over-ear pair is the same bet at $399.95, aimed at people who keep cans for years instead of a two-year upgrade cycle.

What Sony and Apple Still Sell for More

Sony still sells the quieter, lighter commute. The XM6 is 254 grams, folds into a more familiar travel shape for many buyers, and carries Sony’s noise-canceling reputation from earlier 1000X models. Apple still sells the Apple stack: H2 features, Spatial Audio with head tracking, USB-C lossless, and a $549 price that has not moved.

Those extras are real. Max 2 is also the heavyweight at 386.2 grams, and its Smart Case is a 134.5-gram extra object that only parks the battery in a low-power state. Sony’s list price of $459.99 sits $60.04 above Sennheiser’s US listing. Apple’s $549 sits $149.05 above it. Neither pair opens with a screwdriver when the cell fades.

Product manager Sreenath Unnikrishnan said the company focused on refining the whole experience without leaving the Momentum 4 formula. The 42 mm driver is the same size as on the 3 and 4. The new work went into mics, codecs, the case, and the cell door, not a new transducer diameter.

The Case Got Thinner, the Headband Did Not

Sennheiser cut the carry case to 2.1 by 7.6 by 8.3 inches, against 2.6 by 7.7 by 8.3 inches on the Momentum 4, and calls the new case 20 percent smaller. The cups still fold flat rather than folding inward on the headband, so the pack is a slim slab, not a tiny cube. Testers who carry a medium purse said this generation finally fits, which the thicker M4 shell did not.

Comfort is the bill. The Momentum 5 does not feel as premium on the head as recent Sony or Apple cups, and the extra 36 grams versus the XM6 shows up on a long day. ANC on this pair does not create the pressurized ear feel some sealed flagships add. For anyone who wears headphones through a workday, that trade is the one Sony still wins in the first week, before anyone thinks about year four.

US store pages sell the pair with a one-year manufacturer warranty, plus paid extensions. Longevity here is a parts story, not a longer factory promise.

Europe’s Battery Rule Lands in February

Sennheiser announced the Momentum 5 on 25 May 2026 and put it on sale in June 2026, in Bronze, Black, Denim, Lavender, and White. The timing sits months ahead of the EU date that still hangs over portable batteries in headphones.

THE DATES AROUND THE CELL

  1. August 2022: Momentum 4 goes on sale with a 60-hour sealed battery.
  2. 25 May 2026: Sennheiser unveils Momentum 5 with a user-replaceable 700 mAh cell.
  3. June 2026: The new pair goes on sale at the US list price of $399.95.
  4. 14 July 2026: The European Commission adopts extra derogations that ease user-swap rules for some wearables.
  5. 31 July 2026: The EU Right to Repair Directive takes effect, with headphones still outside its core product list.
  6. 5 August 2026: Sennheiser posts the four-screw battery and cushion how-to.
  7. 18 February 2027: Portable batteries in a long list of products, headphones among them, are due to be removable and replaceable under the Batteries Regulation.

Right to Repair Europe’s product table still puts headphones on a replaceable battery rule dated 18 February 2027. Some wearables later won a path that limits swaps to trained people. Over-ear cans are the category Sennheiser chose to open with a consumer screwdriver, before that February date, while Sony and Apple left the cups closed.

Eight Mics Close the Old Chatter Gap

Sennheiser doubled the ANC array to eight digital mics, four per side, and says midrange cancellation is up to three times stronger than on the Momentum 4. Voices and nearby talk, the sounds that used to leak through, come down. It is not a jet engine disappearing. It is office chatter and cabin drone getting quieter without the squeezed-ear sensation some ANC rigs add.

WHAT THE NEW RIG ADDS

  • Drivers: In-house 42 mm dynamic units, tuned in the HD 600 family’s direction, with Hi-Res certification on this generation.
  • Wireless: Bluetooth 5.4 now, with a promised 6.0 firmware path Sennheiser has not dated, plus aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, AAC, and SBC.
  • App: Smart Control Plus carries an 8-band EQ, stepped ANC, anti-wind, and a listening-test Sound Personalization profile.
  • Wire: USB-C digital audio up to 24-bit/96 kHz, plus a 2.5 mm analogue jack and a 3.5 mm cable in the box.

Vocals come through as natural, and bass stays strong without flooding the mix. Small parts of a track, a harmony or a string, show up more than they do on cheaper cups. Dolby Atmos is on board, so films and some music spread beyond a hard left-right pair. Launch chatter split on whether that tuning still has the Momentum 4’s lively pop edge; the new voicing is more even, which is also less punchy if you liked the old warmth.

Bluetooth 6.0 remains a future file. Until that update lands, the pair is a 5.4 product with a codec list that already includes lossless aptX on phones that support it.

The Spare Cell Is Still Missing From the Shop

Design is not inventory. Sennheiser’s US spare-parts shop already sells Momentum 4 / Momentum 5 / HDB 630 earpads at $34.95. A replacement 700 mAh cell is not on that shelf. Sennheiser’s India head said owners will order the battery from the website the way they order pads, then change it at home, with no service-center fee. The company did not give a price.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The door: Four Phillips screws, no adhesive, left cup, official video on 5 August 2026.
  • The pads: Genuine earpads are $34.95 on the US spare-parts list.
  • The pitch: Sennheiser says no service center is required once a spare cell exists to buy.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Spare price: No US listing and no published dollar figure for the 700 mAh pack.
  • Stock date: No public date for when the cell goes on the same shop as the pads.
  • Bluetooth 6.0: Promised by firmware, with no calendar from Sennheiser.

Until that SKU appears, the longer lease is a mechanical fact and a storefront gap. You can open the cup. You cannot yet add a new 700 mAh pack to the cart next to the $34.95 pads. Sony and Apple still ask you to replace the whole headset when their sealed cells fade. Sennheiser is asking you to believe the screwdriver, and then to wait for the part.
