Sennheiser Bets Replaceable Batteries Against Sealed Flagship Rivals

Sennheiser began shipping the Momentum True Wireless 5 on September 3, 2026, at $299.95. That is the same list price as the True Wireless 4. The new bet is not another codec. It is a screwdriver, a plastic wedge, and batteries you are supposed to swap years from now.

The company froze the flagship price, opened both the buds and the case, and spent extra current on stronger noise canceling. Daily runtime with ANC on is now 6 hours. Spare cells are still not on the US store. Sony, Apple, and Bose still glue their packs shut, and Brussels may let them keep doing it.

A Screwdriver Comes in the $299.95 Box

Sennheiser’s August 20 launch from Hanover put user-replaceable batteries at the top of the spec sheet, right beside Bluetooth 6.0 and Dolby Atmos head-tracking. The US shop lists user-replaceable 72 mAh earbud cells and a 760 mAh case pack, opened with standard tools. A plastic wedge ships in the box. You bring the driver.

The brand already tried this trick on the over-ear Momentum 5 Wireless in May, which uses a 700 mAh cell and is rated for 57 hours with ANC on. The in-ear version is the harder object. Each bud weighs 7 grams, 0.8 grams more than the True Wireless 4, and the case is 55 grams. USB-C sits on the bottom left of the case so the pack on the right can come out. The earbud screws loosen but stay on the shell, so they cannot roll under a desk.

The US listing still tells shoppers they will need the spare packs, of course. Those packs are not for sale. Sennheiser has said it does not want cells sitting in drawers uncharged, and a company contact told reviewers the kits may land around $40 to $50 when they do. Until then the longevity story is a design, not a spare-parts catalog.

THE CELL MATH

A battery-protection mode still caps charge at 80 percent if you want the original cells to last longer before you ever open the shells. That is the honest version of the bet: delay the swap, then do it at home.

The 7 mm Drivers Sound a Bit More Open

The drivers are the same 7 mm TrueResponse units made in Tullamore, Ireland, that sat in the True Wireless 4. Sennheiser retuned them, added Bluetooth 6.0 with aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless up to 24-bit/96 kHz, and ran the radio through the Snapdragon Sound S5 platform. Hands-on listening found cleaner treble and a slightly wider stage, still on the natural, accurate side of the $300 class.

Sony’s WF-1000XM6 still hits with more bass warmth. The Sennheisers stay closer to a studio monitor, which is the house sound. Bowers & Wilkins Pi8 buds chase a similar purity and list around $450, with a case that also works as a Bluetooth transmitter. At $299.95 the Momentum pair undercuts that luxury tag by about $150 and keeps an 8-band EQ plus Fraunhofer-built Sound Personalization in the Smart Control Plus app.

Spatial audio with head-tracking is new, and it is tuned first for Dolby Atmos. Turning it on moves the stage and can drain the pack faster. Early listeners already found the highest-quality sound mode will not run at the same time as spatial processing, so the extra polish is a choice, not a stack. On an iPhone 16 Pro using AAC with Spotify Lossless, the advanced quality setting also dropped audio in New York streets and at the gym until the app’s robust connectivity mode took over. That mode favors a stable link and longer runtime. The lossless path is still best at a desk.

Samsung and Google phones never get aptX, because those brands do not license it. Multipoint, Google Fast Pair, and Microsoft Swift Pair are on the radio from day one. Frank Foppe, the product manager, called the package the brand’s most advanced mix of sound and hardware in an earbud. The fit data is less poetic and more useful: 73 percent of testers preferred the new fin-less shape over the last generation. The new tips are a bit firmer. Some ears will still want the old ones.

Why ANC-On Runtime Fell to 6 Hours

Official ratings are 12 hours with ANC off and 6 hours with ANC on, measured at mid volume on an iPhone, plus up to 40 hours once the case is counted. The True Wireless 4 was rated about 7.5 hours off, about 7 hours with ANC, and 30 hours with its case. Sennheiser gained 4.5 hours with canceling off and 10 hours in the case, then gave back 1 hour once the mics start working.

A company representative said the new hybrid adaptive ANC draws more power. That is the trade. The system takes a few seconds to sample the room after you put the buds in, then works hardest on low rumble and decently on mid and high noise. In apartment HVAC tests, on New York sidewalks, and on the subway, canceling landed behind the Sony WF-1000XM6, the AirPods Pro 3, and the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen), close enough to live with and clearly better than the last Momentum buds. Transparency is more natural too. Adaptive Anti-Wind and a micro-perforated mic plate try to keep gusts from punching holes in that seal.

FLAGSHIP ANC HOURS AND LIST PRICE

The 40-hour case total is Sennheiser’s overall figure on that same iPhone test, and it is not labeled as an ANC-on number, so it should not be stacked against Sony’s and Apple’s 24-hour ANC-on case ratings. The comparison that matters on a commute is the 6-hour ANC-on column. That is Bose territory, two hours short of Sony and Apple, bought with a stronger canceling system than the last Momentum pair and with a cell you can theoretically change.

$299.95 Versus Sony, Apple, and Bose

At $299.95 the Momentum True Wireless 5 undercuts the XM6 by about $30 and sits $50.95 above the AirPods Pro 3. It matches Bose on list price and on ANC-on hours. Apple still owns iPhone features Sennheiser does not try to copy, including Precision Finding. Sony still owns the daily charge and, in most tests, the last slice of noise blocking. Bose still owns the people who buy silence first.

Sennheiser’s offer is the long hold. The buds are IP54, they stayed put on a run in testing, and they have no hooks, so a dedicated sport pair is still the safer call for hard workouts. Call quality is the other catch-up item. Each bud now uses four mics, including a bone-conduction voice accelerometer, with AI isolation on top. Callers on New York streets heard little background noise and a clear voice, plus a faint woosh from the noise reduction. Engineers said a firmware pass would try to kill that woosh. Brussels Opened an Exit for Sealed Earbuds

The timing is not a vibe. It is a calendar. Article 11 of the EU Batteries Regulation 2023/1542 is due to apply from 18 February 2027. As a rule, portable batteries in products sold in the EU must be removable and replaceable by the end user with common tools, or with tools the maker gives away in the box, and spare batteries must stay on sale for at least five years after the last unit of that model ships.

On 14 July 2026 the Commission adopted a delegated act adding six new product categories that can skip full end-user access, including wearable devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers. Independent analyses of that text argue some hearables may also fit a wet-environment or miniaturisation route, so a sealed earbud could still go to an independent professional instead of the owner’s kitchen table. Fairphone already sells Fairbuds with owner-swappable cells, and Bang & Olufsen’s Beoplay Eleven needs a send-in technician. Google has made the Pixel Buds 2a case pack replaceable, not the buds. A $300 Sennheiser flagship that opens in both places is still rare. If the wearable derogation holds, Sony, Apple, and Bose can keep glue and spend their engineering on the extra two hours of ANC-on life. Sennheiser will have paid for a repair path the law may not force.

The App Still Skips Talk Detection

Smart Control Plus is a thick app: EQ, Sound Zones that flip settings by place, wear detection that pauses when a bud comes out, and a basic find function that shows the last spot the buds disconnected. It does not listen for your voice and drop into transparency the way Sony Speak-to-Chat or Apple Conversation Awareness does. It has no voice controls of the sort on high-end Samsung, Apple, and Sony buds. Those omissions will annoy people who talk through their day more than they will annoy people who sit and listen.

The new shells are rounder and smoother than the chunky True Wireless 4, which helps the 73 percent comfort score and also makes them easier to fumble with dry fingers when you pull them out of the case. That is a small physical cost of the slimmer look. The larger cost is on the clock. You get a flagship that sounds like a Sennheiser, cancels better than the last one, and opens with a driver, and you get 6 hours when the mics are working. The spare packs that complete the sentence are still a promise on a product page, not a SKU.

Consumer Sennheiser gear is run by Sonova Holding AG under license, the same group that already thinks in years-long hearing-device cycles.
