Xreal Bets $1,279 Aura Glasses Can Beat Meta
Xreal priced Aura Android XR glasses at $1,279, $20 under Meta’s VR Glasses, and is taking paid orders from reservation holders before the holidays.
Xreal opened paid pre-orders for Aura Android XR glasses on October 7 at $1,279, $20 under Meta’s VR Glasses. Only people who already paid a reservation can finish checkout, and the first boxes are aimed at the United States, Canada, Japan, and South Korea before the holidays.
The wager is timing as much as hardware. Aura puts Google’s Android XR and Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Reality Elite chip in a clip-on puck, then hangs 95 g see-through glasses off a cable, months before Meta’s own $1,299 puck glasses are due in spring 2027.
Xreal Lists Aura at $1,279, $20 Under Meta
The base pair is 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage for $1,279. The 16GB and 512GB kit is $1,499, a $220 step. Meta’s VR Glasses, announced with the same Reality Elite chip in a separate puck, list at $1,299 and are not due until spring 2027.
That $20 gap will write itself into every comparison chart, and it is real. It is also a small slice of what the money actually buys. Samsung’s Galaxy XR, the first Android XR headset, still lists at $1,799. Xreal’s own One Pro display glasses sell at $599. Meta’s Ray-Ban Display, a small in-lens screen with a wrist band, is $799.
THE $1,300 GLASSES SHELF
| Device | U.S. list | On the face | Software | When |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xreal Aura | $1,279 | 95 g glasses plus puck | Android XR | Holiday 2026 |
| Meta VR Glasses | $1,299 | About 100 g plus puck | Horizon OS | Spring 2027 |
| Samsung Galaxy XR | $1,799 | Full headset | Android XR | On sale |
| Xreal One Pro | $599 | Display glasses | Xreal OS | On sale |
| Meta Ray-Ban Display | $799 | One-lens screen | Meta | On sale |
Aura and Meta’s VR Glasses share a price band and a split-compute idea. They do not share optics. Aura is optical see-through, so the real world stays in the lenses. Meta’s pair is a passthrough visor with eye tracking, built to drop virtual rooms over camera video. Calling them twins because both hide a chip in a puck skips that split.
A 95 g Frame Still Needs a Computer on a Clip
Xreal’s product page lists the glasses at 95 grams and puts the heavy parts in the puck: Snapdragon Reality Elite, the 4,455 mAh (34.84 Wh) battery, a trackpad, and a fingerprint sensor. The frames keep an X1S spatial coprocessor for display and sensors, with motion-to-photon latency listed at 3 ms. Xreal tells buyers to clip the puck to a shirt or hang it on a lanyard.
The image is two Sony Micro-OLED panels at 1,920 by 1,200 pixels per eye, running at 120 Hz, across a 70-degree optical see-through field. Electrochromic dimming has five levels, so the lenses can stay clear or go dark for video. Hands and 6DoF tracking come from world-facing cameras. Bose-tuned open speakers handle sound. Frames come in medium (60 to 66 mm) and large (66 to 72 mm), and insertable prescription lenses are supported.
WHAT THE SPLIT SYSTEM INCLUDES
- On the face: 95 g see-through glasses with the X1S coprocessor, 70-degree view, and five-level dimming.
- On the clip: the Reality Elite puck with Android XR, Google Play, Gemini, trackpad, fingerprint reader, and the 4,455 mAh battery.
- On the cable: a wired link for compute and power; DisplayPort-in also lets the glasses act as a monitor for a PC or handheld.
- In software: up to five virtual screens, more than 150 XR apps, and the wider Play catalog, including YouTube, Maps, Chrome, Photos, and games such as Demeo.
Hands-on notes from Google I/O called the picture sharp and bright outdoors. Runtime in hours is still unpublished, so the 34.84 Wh pack is the only official energy figure. Peak brightness is unpublished too.
Founder Passes Sold Out Before the Price Landed
Reservations opened in mid-June without a final price, only a cap: the base model would not exceed $1,500 before tax. Two thousand Founder Priority Passes at $299, each promised earliest-batch shipping and a number printed on the product, sold out in 36 hours. A $99 Launch Credit converted into $199 against the invoice, a $100 bonus. People who skipped both can still buy a $199 deposit credited at launch, with codes set to activate on October 28.
On October 7 Xreal said only those who reserved before that date can pay the balance now. Founder holders who finish payment and pick a size by October 17 keep an individually numbered Founder’s Edition. Everyone else waits for general orders at launch. The $99 credit knocks the base invoice to $1,080 after the $199 voucher; Founder buyers apply the full $299 and owe $980 on the $1,279 kit.
FROM DEPOSIT TO A BOX
- June 16, 2026: Reservations open at AWE with no final price, only the $1,500 ceiling.
- June 18, 2026: All 2,000 Founder passes are gone inside 36 hours.
- October 7, 2026: List prices land at $1,279 and $1,499; reservation holders can check out.
- October 17, 2026: Deadline for Founder holders to lock a numbered unit.
- October 28, 2026: New $199 priority deposits become usable as credit.
- Holiday 2026: First shipments targeted for four countries; further markets wait until 2027.
One reply under Xreal’s pricing post asked which holiday that sentence names. The company did not pin a day. “Before the holidays” is a window, not a tracking number.
Qualcomm’s New Chip Still Lives in the Puck
Aura is the second shipping Android XR device after Galaxy XR, and the first with optical see-through glasses. Google’s Gemini is built in and can talk about what the cameras see, with user permission. Play apps are the distribution bet: Xreal is selling a spatial computer that already has a store, not a new walled garden.
The puck is why the frames stay at 95 g. Qualcomm’s Reality Elite platform, which Reality Elite debuts first in Aura, is rated for 48 TOPS of on-device AI. Against Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, Qualcomm claims up to 60% more GPU performance, 30% more CPU, 160% more NPU, 20% longer battery at the same load, and a chip that runs up to 12°C cooler. The same silicon is specified to drive 4.4K per eye at 90 fps in a headset. Aura uses 1,920 by 1,200 at 120 Hz, so the extra headroom is for Gemini, hand tracking, and five floating windows, not for a denser panel.
Spatial computing is entering a new phase, and Xreal Aura is designed for this moment. By combining lightweight optical see through glasses with Android XR, Gemini, and Snapdragon-powered performance, Xreal Aura gives movie-lovers, gamers, sports fans, desktop workers, developers and the enterprise, a new way to experience computing that’s more wearable, open, and connected to the world around them.
Chi Xu, co-founder and CEO, Xreal
Xu’s launch note says people will be able to use it this year. Android’s brand account replied to the price post with a single line, “the future looks bright from here,” which is as close as Google has come to treating Aura as its glasses moment on the record.

What $1,279 Buys That $599 Display Glasses Do Not
Buyers who already own Xreal’s $599 One Pro are being asked for more than twice that sum. The extra money is Android XR, Gemini, a 70-degree see-through canvas, 6DoF windows that stay in the room, and a puck that is a tiny Android PC with a fingerprint reader. The One Pro is a private monitor. Aura is sold as a spatial computer that still looks like glasses until you notice the cord.
The cord is the tax. Qualcomm’s efficiency claims were written to support thinner, cooler designs, including headsets that keep the chip on the face. Xreal used that thermal budget to take the chip off the face. That is a coherent engineering choice. It is also why a $1,279 “glasses” kit still asks you to dress a computer onto a belt loop. Meta made the same choice for its $1,299 pair, with a different OS and passthrough instead of clear lenses.
At this price the software has to work on day one. Xreal cites millions of Play apps and more than 150 titles built for XR. Floating five Chrome and YouTube windows on a train is the demo. Whether those apps behave as spatial software, or as stretched phone layouts, will decide if $1,279 feels like a computer or like an expensive dongle.
Two Memory Tiers and Four Launch Countries
Reservation holders pick medium or large frames and one of the 12GB and 16GB Aura configurations. The kit in the case is glasses, puck, charging cable, interconnect cable, and a cloth. First shipments are the United States, Canada, Japan, and South Korea. Xreal says more countries follow in 2027, and that the pause is about support and the app catalog, not a tease.
LIST PRICES IN THE FIRST FOUR MARKETS
| Market | 12GB / 256GB | 16GB / 512GB |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $1,279 | $1,499 |
| Canada | $1,829 | $2,149 |
| Japan | ¥229,800 | ¥269,800 |
| South Korea | ₩1,990,000 | ₩2,290,000 |
Canada’s $1,829 base is the local list, not a U.S. surcharge in disguise. Japan’s ¥229,800 tracks the dollar tag rather than cutting it. People who did not reserve before October 7 can still put $199 down and wait for the October 28 credit window, then for general checkout when Xreal opens the shop to everyone.
If the holiday freight actually moves, Aura will be the first Reality Elite product you can wear as glasses, on Google’s OS, at a price that sits $20 under Meta’s still-unshipped pair. If the boxes slip, the $1,279 figure is just another reservation that beat the old $1,500 cap, and Meta still gets the spring to answer with eye tracking and a full Quest catalog on the same class of puck.
