The iPhone 18 Pro Battery Tests Crown Odd Winners

iPhone 18 Pro Max lasts longest and the 18 Pro charges fastest, but the $929 iPhone 17 and a $129 battery swap still win for most people.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max lasted longer between charges than any Apple phone in lab tests. The smaller iPhone 18 Pro, which starts at $1,199, hit 82% in 30 minutes on a cable, the fastest wired fill in the lineup.

Apple rates the Max at 45 hours of video and sells it from $1,299. A 2024 iPhone 16 Plus still won a 45-minute mixed-use grind by a single point, and the $929 iPhone 17 keeps landing near the top without a Pro price.

The 18 Pro Max Wins Apple’s Endurance Crown

Two lab checks sat behind the ranking. One streamed video over Wi-Fi for three hours with the screen at full brightness. The other ran 45 minutes of games, video, social scrolling, and a video call at half brightness.

In the three-hour stream, the iPhone 18 Pro held the most charge. The iPhone 17 Pro lost 8% more in the same run, a one-year gap that is large for this test. The 18 Pro Max placed second. The $929 iPhone 17, $270 below the 18 Pro, placed fourth.

The mixed-use grind told a different story. The iPhone 16 Plus still posted the best remaining charge. The 18 Pro Max and last year’s 17 Pro Max tied for second, one point back. The 18 Pro finished last among the iPhones in that test, though it still beat the Pixel 11 Pro and Galaxy S26.

THE LAB SCOREBOARD

Model Starting price eSIM cell 30-min wired Apple video rating
iPhone 18 Pro Max $1,299 5,567 mAh 77% 45 hours
iPhone 18 Pro $1,199 4,288 mAh 82% 36 hours
iPhone 17 Pro Pro pricing 4,252 mAh 74% not used here
iPhone 17 $929 not published 69% 30 hours

Averaging the stream and the stress run still puts the 18 Pro Max first. The 17 Pro Max is close enough that a leftover unit, if you can find one, is the same phone for daily life. Apple has stopped selling it.

iFixit Found a 0.8 Percent Bump in the Pro

The Max is the phone that grew a real cell. iFixit’s September 20 teardown read the eSIM packs as 4,288 mAh and 5,567 mAh cells. That is 0.8% more than the 4,252 mAh iPhone 17 Pro, and 9.4% more than the 5,088 mAh iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Physical-SIM units use smaller packs. Apple says eSIM-only models, which ship in the U.S. and a short list of other markets, gain two extra hours of video because the tray is gone.

So the smaller Pro is an efficiency story more than a bigger-battery story. Both phones use the A20 Pro, built on a 2-nanometer process, and they ship on iOS 27. Apple says the C2 modem uses 15 percent less energy than C1X. A next-gen vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the 17 Pro’s cooler.

The U.S. 18 Pro Max is the odd one. iFixit found every 18 Pro and every non-U.S. Pro Max carrying C2, while the U.S. Max still uses a Qualcomm modem the teardown called more power-hungry. That is the phone with the biggest cell, which is likely why Apple parked the older radio there.

82 Percent in 30 Minutes Needs a 60W Plug

Wired charging is the 18 Pro’s clean win. From empty, it reached 53% in 15 minutes and 82% in 30 minutes. The 17 Pro added 74% in 30 minutes, an 8-point gap that matches the jump from 40-watt charging to 60-watt charging.

The 18 Pro Max added 77% in 30 minutes and 48% at 15 minutes. The 17 Pro Max added 69%. The iPhone 17 also hit 69% in that half hour, matching last year’s Max on a cable.

Apple’s own claim is narrower. Both Pro phones reach 50% in around 15 minutes with a 60-watt adapter that supports adjustable voltage, sold separately, plus the USB-C cable. Wireless is 50% in 30 minutes with a 35-watt adapter and a MagSafe charger, also sold separately. MagSafe and Qi2 still top out at 25 watts, same as the 17 Pro class.

That 15-minute figure is gated on the brick. A 20-watt leftover from an older iPhone will charge these phones. It will not hit the headline speed. Third-party 60-watt USB-C adapters that speak adjustable voltage are the cheap way to unlock the lab result; Apple has not published a price for its own 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max.

Wireless barely moved. The 17 Pro beat the new 18 Pro by one point in a 30-minute MagSafe run. The 18 Pro Max placed just behind the iPhone Air, which is what you expect when the Max is hauling the largest cell in the test.

THE CHARGE CLOCK

  1. iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro: Apple rated 50% in around 30 minutes on a cable.
  2. iPhone 17 Pro: the claim dropped to 50% in 20 minutes with a 40-watt adapter.
  3. iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max: 50% in around 15 minutes with a 60-watt adjustable-voltage adapter.

Over two years the advertised time to half has been cut in half. The box still does not include the adapter that makes the new number real.

The $929 iPhone 17 Still Beats the Upgrade Math

If the job is “last a day and fill up at a desk,” the standard iPhone 17 is the awkward leftover that keeps passing. It placed fourth in the three-hour stream. It matched the 17 Pro Max at 69% in 30 minutes on a cable. Apple still rates it at 30 hours of video playback and 50% in 20 minutes with a 40-watt adapter.

The 16 Plus is the other holdout. It is two generations old and it still won the mixed-use stress test. Anyone whose 16 Plus health is fine is paying for cameras and silicon, not for another hour of TikTok, if they move to an 18 Pro Max.

Worn batteries are a different bill. Out-of-warranty battery service is listed at $129 on the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, $119 on the 17 Pro models, and $99 on the iPhone 17 and the 16 Plus. That is the spend that keeps coming up when people with tired iPhone 13s ask whether to jump to a Max, wait for the Duo, or just swap the cell. Camera-first buyers have a reason to move. Battery-only buyers do not.

WHO WINS THE BATTERY SPEND

  • Longest life: The iPhone 18 Pro Max, on the averaged lab ranking and on Apple’s 45-hour video sheet.
  • Fastest cable fill: The iPhone 18 Pro, at 82% in 30 minutes, if you already own a 60-watt adjustable-voltage adapter.
  • Mixed-use grind: The iPhone 16 Plus, one point ahead of both Pro Maxes in the 45-minute test.
  • Life per dollar: The $929 iPhone 17, fourth in streaming and tied with last year’s Max on a 30-minute charge.
  • Keep the phone you have: A $99 to $129 official battery swap, once health has dropped, instead of a four-figure upgrade.

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said the company “took huge leaps forward” on camera, performance, battery, and intelligence. The camera leap is the variable aperture and new Pro controls. The battery leap is concentrated in the Max cell and in 60-watt wired charging, not in a new all-day story for every size.

How Apple Gets to 45 Hours of Video

Apple still will not print milliamp-hours on the spec sheet. It prints hours, and those hours are the most useful way to track the Pro line because the video-playback test has been on every Pro page for years.

APPLE’S HOUR RATINGS

  • iPhone 18 Pro: Up to 24 hours typical use, 36 hours video, 33 hours streamed video.
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max: Up to 30 hours typical use, up to 45 hours of video playback, 40 hours streamed.
  • Versus last year’s Max: Apple says the new Max adds 6 hours of video, which puts the 17 Pro Max at 39 hours on the same sheet.
  • Five-minute top-up: Five minutes on a cable gives the 18 Pro Max around 7 hours of video playback.

Typical use is new this year. It is a better guide to a mixed day than the video number, which is the friendliest test Apple publishes. The 18 Pro’s 24-hour typical rating and the Max’s 30-hour rating are the figures to hold if you do not watch locally stored video for two days straight.

eSIM-only models are the ones those video hours describe. Apple lists those units for Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the U.S., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

A Metal Tray Behind a Fragile Screen

Once you are past the display, a battery job on these phones is the rare Apple repair that has gotten easier. A metal tray is held by 13 screws. The tray and cell come out together. The cell still uses electrically releasable adhesive: about 90 seconds at 12 volts and it lifts clean.

Getting there is the problem. The phones still open from the front. iFixit cracked or pulled the white plastic display frame on three of the four units it opened, a failure it had not seen at this rate on earlier Pros. Both phones score a provisional 7 out of 10 for repairability. The score gives credit for the tray and the modular cameras, and it has not yet dinged the frames because four phones is a small sample.

The most sustainable phone is the one already in your pocket.

iFixit, iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max teardown, September 20, 2026

That line is the practical close for anyone whose current iPhone still takes a charge. Apple will replace a battery at no extra charge under AppleCare+ once maximum capacity falls below 80%. Without that plan, the $99 to $129 service fee is the number that should sit next to $1,199 before anyone talks about 60-watt plugs.

The iPhone Duo goes on sale October 23. Apple rates it at up to 44 hours of video on the outer display and about 20 minutes to 50% on the same 60-watt adapter. Independent battery runs on that foldable are still ahead. Until those numbers land, the 18 Pro Max is Apple’s endurance champion on paper and in the lab, and the 18 Pro is the cable sprinter. The cheaper wins are last year’s 17, a healthy 16 Plus, and a fresh cell in a phone you already know.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Big Is the iPhone 18 Pro Battery in Watt-Hours?

iFixit read 16.76 Wh on the eSIM iPhone 18 Pro pack and 21.751 Wh on the eSIM Pro Max pack. Those watt-hour labels sit on the cells next to the 4,288 mAh and 5,567 mAh figures; physical-SIM models use smaller packs and are not the units behind Apple’s 36-hour and 45-hour video claims.

Which iPhone 18 Pro Models Get the Larger eSIM Cell?

eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max units ship in Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the United States, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Apple says dropping the SIM tray in those markets adds two hours of video playback compared with physical-SIM hardware sold elsewhere.

Does AppleCare+ Cover an iPhone 18 Pro Battery Swap?

Yes, once the battery’s maximum capacity has fallen below 80 percent. AppleCare+ lists that battery service at $0. The $129 out-of-warranty fee applies only when the phone is outside warranty and has no AppleCare+ plan covering the job.

How Much Does the iPhone 18 Pro Weigh?

The iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211 grams (7.44 ounces). The iPhone 18 Pro Max weighs 249 grams (8.78 ounces). Both use an aluminum unibody with Ceramic Shield on the front and back.

What Battery Life Does Apple Rate on the iPhone 17?

Apple rates the standard iPhone 17 at up to 30 hours of video playback and up to 27 hours of streamed video, with 50% charge in 20 minutes on a 40-watt adapter or higher. Those sheet numbers sit under the 18 Pro’s 36-hour video rating and explain why the cheaper 17 still looks like enough phone for a full day.

Numbers get particular attention here. A percentage in a business story is recomputed from the underlying figures before it goes live, a benchmark in a technology or gaming review is quoted with the conditions it was measured under, and a transfer fee or a lap time in the sports and auto pages is traced back to the club, the league or the timing sheet that published it. The same rule covers news, science, entertainment, lifestyle and travel: if a figure cannot be tied to a filing, a dataset, a transcript or a test Harry ran himself, it does not appear.
