Sony Reversed the $199 Cut That Built PlayStation

A Disc PS5 is $649.99 after two hikes, within $4 of $299 from 1995 in August 2026 dollars, because Sony stopped cutting aging hardware.

Sony’s original PlayStation launched in North America at $299 on September 9, 1995, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics now prices that tag at $653.78. A Disc PlayStation 5 lists at $649.99, a figure Sony reached by raising a six-year-old console twice instead of cutting it.

That near match is the easy headline. The older playbook was a $100 drop to $199 in May 1996, eight months after launch, and then a march down to $99. The 2026 machine got to the same real-dollar neighborhood by climbing.

Sony Cut the PlayStation to $199 in Eight Months

At the first E3 on May 11, 1995, Sega had just put Saturn at $399. Steve Race of Sony Computer Entertainment America answered with a single number, $299, and sat down. The North American launch on September 9, 1995, used that suggested retail price.

The next May, at E3 again, Jim Whims, then executive vice president for Sony Computer Entertainment, told a packed panel the company’s rule on price changes was simple. “Go big or go home,” he said, and announced $199, effective immediately. Sega had already moved Saturn to $249 from $299. Sony went lower.

Sony Computer Entertainment’s own North American hardware price ledger kept cutting after that. The original box did not hold a launch price for six years. It shed $200 in four seasons.

THE ORIGINAL PLAYSTATION’S U.S. PRICE CUTS

  1. September 9, 1995: PlayStation goes on sale in North America at an SRP of $299.
  2. May 1996: SRP falls to $199, a $100 cut eight months after launch.
  3. March 3, 1997: SRP falls to $149.
  4. September 1, 1998: SRP falls to $129.
  5. August 23, 1999: SRP falls to $99, with the smaller PS one arriving at $99 in September 2000.

The same ledger later copied the opening move on PlayStation 2: $299 on October 26, 2000, then $199 in May 2002. Aging hardware was supposed to get cheaper. That was the business.

On April 2, a Disc PS5 Cost $649.99

Sony Interactive Entertainment put the Disc model at a $499.99 launch price on November 12, 2020, with the Digital Edition at $399.99. Those were the U.S. stickers for the first holiday, and they sat still far longer than $299 did in 1995.

They did not sit still through 2025. Isabelle Tomatis, vice president of global marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote on August 20, 2025, that U.S. prices rose $50 in August, effective August 21: Disc $549.99, Digital $499.99, Pro $749.99. Accessories stayed put. Other markets were left alone in that note.

On March 27, 2026, Tomatis posted new recommended prices from April 2, this time worldwide. The U.S. Disc went to $649.99, Digital to $599.99, and Pro to $899.99. That is $150 above the Disc launch tag, a 30% rise, and $200 above the Digital launch tag, a 50% rise. The Pro added $150 on top of the August 2025 figure.

PLAYSTATION 5 U.S. RECOMMENDED PRICES

Model Nov. 12, 2020 Aug. 21, 2025 April 2, 2026
PS5 Disc $499.99 $549.99 $649.99
PS5 Digital Edition $399.99 $499.99 $599.99
PS5 Pro Not sold $749.99 $899.99

The Disc SKU still includes an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, the same physical slot a LEGO PlayStation that still opens a disc tray treats as an object worth building. Sony is not discounting that drive. It is charging more for the box that holds it, while still shipping AI upscaling on the base PS5, so the six-year-old machine is gaining features as the sticker rises.

A six-year-old console is supposed to get cheaper. This one did the opposite, and owners who paid $399.99 for Digital now see a $599.99 RRP, $200 above the launch ticket. Reseller listings have pushed used Pro units as high as $1,400, well above the $899.99 recommended price.

How Much $299 From 1995 Is Worth in 2026

The BLS CPI Inflation Calculator finds that $299 in September 1995 equals $653.78 in August 2026. That is $3.79 above the Disc PS5’s $649.99 tag. The yearly CPI-U change to August 2026 was 3.4%.

On the same August 2026 basis, a $200 price from 1996 is $427.82, a $500 price from 2020 is $643.50, and a $400 price from 2020 is $514.80. Those last two round the official $499.99 and $399.99 launch stickers. They are why a $649.99 Disc in 2026 looks, at a glance, like a wash with the first PlayStation.

AUGUST 2026 DOLLARS FOR OLD STICKERS

  • $299 in 1995: $653.78, within $4 of today’s Disc RRP.
  • $200 in 1996: $427.82, the first cut, not the launch.
  • $500 in 2020: $643.50, in line with the Disc launch rounded up.
  • $400 in 2020: $514.80, in line with the Digital launch rounded up.

Compare launch with launch and the CPI almost agrees. Compare a mature 1996 PlayStation with a mature 2026 PS5 and it does not. Sony’s 1996 cut, even rounded to $200, is $427.82 in August 2026 money. The Disc PS5 is $649.99. The Digital Edition is $599.99. The Pro is $899.99.

The $199 Cut Has No Cousin on Store Shelves

May 1996 is the fairer rhyme for April 2026, because both dates sit well after launch. In 1996 the company still wanted living rooms that had not bought in at $299. In 2026 the cheapest new PS5 in the U.S. is $599.99, and it has no disc drive.

There is no $427 PlayStation in the 2026 lineup. There is no $199 heir, and no $99 heir. The mass price that Whims put on stage was a tool for household share, and Sony used it until the original hardware was a $99 impulse. The current family starts at $599.99 and tops out at $899.99.

Tomatis tied the April move to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” and called it necessary after “careful evaluation.” The August 2025 U.S. note had used a shorter phrase, “a challenging economic environment.” Component costs and import taxes are real inputs. They do not rewrite the 1996 choice, which was to take $100 off a console that was not yet a year old in America.

With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally. We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.

Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President, Global Marketing, Sony Interactive Entertainment, PlayStation Blog, March 27, 2026

The Pro at $899.99 has no 1995 twin. Sony did not sell a premium PlayStation in that generation. The 2026 comparison that uses the Pro against the first grey box is a mismatch of product class, which is the point: the expensive SKU is now a standard part of the line, not a rare add-on.

Retro Shops Ask $216 to $260 for a Working PS1

The original hardware is no longer a $99 toy, and it is not a $649.99 one either. It trades as old stock, with the usual caveats about lasers, discs, and sellers who have not tested a pad in years.

USED PLAYSTATION 1 ASKING PRICES

  • Restored shop units: Retro vGames lists working consoles at $216 to $260 at regular prices.
  • Loose auctions: eBay listings can land under $100, depending on the seller and shipping.
  • Other retro boxes: Plenty of old consoles still change hands under $150 if you are not picky about the revision.

An unopened PlayStation in the original retail box is the collector chase, and that is a different market from a scuffed SCPH unit that still reads Crash Bandicoot. Return policies matter more than nostalgia copy, because a dead drive is a paperweight. The cheap PlayStation in 2026 is the first one, bought used, not the one Sony is building now.

Go Big or Go Home Built a Mass Market

Whims used that line to justify a cut, and the room applauded. The phrase still fits Sony’s 2026 hardware sheet if you point it the other way. Going big, in April, meant $100 on the Disc and Digital models and $150 on the Pro, on top of the $50 U.S. step in August 2025.

The CPI chart that puts $299 from 1995 next to $649.99 from 2026 is accurate as far as it goes. It goes exactly as far as a launch price from a 16-bit-to-3D war, set against a late-cycle machine after two published increases. It does not go as far as May 1996, when Sony decided the living-room price was $199 and then kept going down.

The Disc PS5’s $649.99 tag sits $3.79 under $653.78, the August 2026 value of $299 from September 1995. Sony posted that $649.99 figure on March 27, 2026, and it took effect April 2.

Numbers get particular attention here. A percentage in a business story is recomputed from the underlying figures before it goes live, a benchmark in a technology or gaming review is quoted with the conditions it was measured under, and a transfer fee or a lap time in the sports and auto pages is traced back to the club, the league or the timing sheet that published it. The same rule covers news, science, entertainment, lifestyle and travel: if a figure cannot be tied to a filing, a dataset, a transcript or a test Harry ran himself, it does not appear.
