The Coalition Bets Gears of War on Emergence Day
Gears of War: E-Day launched October 6 at 87 on Metacritic after a from-scratch rebuild, with Steam colder and Horde Siege still unproven.
Gears of War: E-Day launched on October 6 with an 87 on Metacritic, the series’ highest critic score since Gears of War 3. The Coalition, Xbox Game Studios’ Vancouver team, spent seven years on a from-scratch prequel instead of Gears 6, then shipped it the same day on Xbox Series X and Series S, PC, Steam, and Game Pass for $69.99.
That is a stacked wager: make the Locust frightening again, tell Emergence Day through one squad in one city, and put a flagship Gears game on Steam and Game Pass at once. The campaign half of the bet is the part critics scored. The rest is still in motion.
The Coalition Started Over With an Empty Hard Drive
After Gears 5 in 2019, the studio kept shipping. Two mainline games, Gears Tactics, a mobile spinoff, and a pile of Gears 5 updates had all run on inherited code. Studio staff later called that stretch “five Gears in five years.” E-Day is the first Coalition game that did not port old assets. Technical director Kate Rayner said the team began with an empty hard drive and rebuilt everything from scratch: characters, enemies, weapons, animation, sound, and the city itself.
Creative director Matt Searcy said the move to Unreal Engine 5 forced the question they had been too busy to ask. What does Gears need to be now, if nothing old can be dragged forward? Brand director Nicole Fawcette put it in one line: everything you see in E-Day did not exist before this game. People Can Fly, which worked on the original trilogy and Gears of War: Judgment, came back as a co-development partner in January 2025.
They did not continue the Gears 5 cliffhanger. Searcy has said the pandemic pause, the new engine, and a hard look at the brand all pointed at the same night. Emergence Day is the moment the Locust first break the surface of Sera, 14 years before the 2006 game. Epic never told that night in detail. The Coalition treated that gap as usable space, and novelist Karen Traviss, who wrote the old tie-in books, consulted on the backstory around Carlos Santiago and Dom’s family.
We never leave Bravo Squad for the entire game. The entire story is told from their perspective. Even though there’s an event going on all over the world, we never jump anywhere else. You only see what they see and learn what they learn.
Matt Searcy, studio creative director, The Coalition, Xbox Wire
Kalona is the whole map. Art director Aryan Hanbeck said the studio built it from the view outside its Vancouver windows: waterfront, stadium, refineries, stacked housing. Searcy compared the structure to Band of Brothers. You know a planet is dying. You only see four people who happen to be in the way. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, voiced again by John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro, are home from the Pendulum Wars for an armistice memorial when the street opens. They are not legends yet. They do not have names for the things that come out of the hole.
Rayner’s launch note on X listed the hardware bet in plain terms: ray tracing, MegaLights, hardware Lumen, Nanite skinning, and 60fps on Xbox. Official copy also promises 4K on a compatible display. The horror brief is not flavor text. Hanbeck said the team leaned into light and dark because the first Gears games had that fear, and later ones lost it once players knew the Locust by name.
Critics Landed at 87 With Horde Still Closed
Metacritic’s Xbox Series X listing carries an 87 Metascore from 48 reviews, labelled Generally Favorable. Forty-four of those reviews are positive, four are mixed, and none are tagged negative. OpenCritic’s 87 Top Critic Average sits on 79 reviews, with 90% of critics recommending the game. Those two 87s are the number launch day ran on.
Review copies that went out when the embargo lifted on October 1 did not include Horde Siege or Versus Ranked, so the score that greeted the full launch is still, in large part, a campaign number. Some write-ups posted after October 6 do talk about the new Horde mode. The ranked climb was not in the builds that created the 87.
GEARS METACRITIC SCORES
| Game | Metascore |
|---|---|
| Gears of War | 94 |
| Gears of War 2 | 93 |
| Gears of War 3 | 91 |
| Gears of War 4 | 84 |
| Gears 5 | 84 |
| Gears of War: E-Day | 87 |
E-Day sits fourth in that stack, above both Coalition sequels and still below the original trilogy. That is a recovery, not a coronation. TheXboxHub scored it 100. A 50 sits among the four mixed notices. Abbie Stone wrote that the cover shooting and multiplayer are strong and that the campaign is an exhausting, endless firefight. Richard Wakeling called the story disappointing and the open stretches dull. Even some of the 90-range write-ups say Marcus and Dom never get the attention the marketing promised.
Xbox’s own launch note still teaches the old grammar. Stay in cover. Blind-fire when you cannot peek. The Chainsaw Lancer remains the all-rounder, the Gnasher still ends fights at arm’s length, and the Longshot still pops a Boomer before it reaches you. Melee is the first lesson, handed over with a pipe and a Snub pistol before the game lets you look at a rifle. Side paths in Kalona hide optional jobs for other squads and civilians, often paid in a weapon mod. A sharp chime means a collectable, from COG tags to a can of soup. That is the game The Coalition wanted critics to feel: familiar guns, meaner streets, less swagger on first contact.
Who Is Mags Carter in Bravo Squad?
Mags Carter is a former Gear who now works at Kalona’s Imulsion refinery. Elizabeth Ludlow plays her. Lucas Reyes, a young cadet and comms officer who never saw the Pendulum front, is played by Jake Ryan Lozano. All four members of Bravo Squad are playable from the start, in solo, in two-player split-screen on console, and in four-player online co-op. Searcy’s origin scene for the squad is almost a dare. The road opens, Wretches pour out, civilians run, and four people in plain clothes look at each other and run toward it.
Xbox sold E-Day as Marcus and Dom’s night. Steam’s most-voted complaints say the camera prefers Carter. A tally of the 100 most prominent English negative Steam reviews on October 5 found 51 aimed at her place in the story. The charge is bait and switch: a helmet on the menu that is not Marcus, a new veteran who cuts in, issues orders, and pulls the other two out of trouble. Some of those reviews also go after Pride-themed multiplayer cosmetics and at Carter as the series’ first openly LGBTQ character. Plenty of the same posts still praise the shooting.
The other side of that argument is just as loud. Players who like Carter talk about rust lung, the refinery, and a backstory that is older and harder than the two famous names standing next to her. Fawcette has described E-Day as two origin stories at once, the Locust War and “a brotherhood coming together.” If you came only for the old friendship, a four-person squad will feel like dilution. If you accept Searcy’s rule that you never leave Bravo, Carter is load-bearing. The game cannot show Emergence Day through four people and then pretend two of them are extras.
That fight is noisier than the review math. Steam did not fall into negative. It cooled. The gunplay argument is quieter than the casting argument, which is how you know the campaign bet landed on a nerve the studio chose on purpose. They built new people into a night everyone thought they already knew.
Steam’s First Night and the Game Pass Split
SteamDB logged 31,206 concurrent Steam players as the all-time peak on October 7, the day after the worldwide unlock. Premium owners had already pushed the finished game to 20,374 on October 2, nearly double Gears 5’s Steam record of 10,196. An August multiplayer beta had gone higher still, to 22,084, which means the first public test outran early access and then launch week outran both. Relative to Gears 5 on the same store, 31,206 is more than triple. Relative to Xbox consoles and the Xbox app, it is a slice. Microsoft has not published the combined peak.
STEAM ON LAUNCH WEEK
- Peak players: SteamDB’s all-time high is 31,206 concurrent players on October 7.
- User reviews: 3,385 positive and 1,021 negative, or 76.8% positive across 4,406 reviews.
- Earlier peaks: 20,374 in Premium early access on October 2, and 22,084 in the August beta.
- Store prices: Standard is $69.99; Premium is $99.99 with up to five days of early access from October 1.
A 76.8% Steam score against an 87 critic score is a gap of about ten points, and it is the gap the Mags argument lives in. Calls that a 20,000-player early-access weekend made the launch a flop were already stale by October 7. They also ignore Game Pass. The Standard Edition is included from day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. The Essential and Premium subscription tiers do not get that day-one drop. Online campaign co-op, Horde Siege, and Versus still need a Game Pass plan that includes online multiplayer. Split-screen is console only. Xbox Play Anywhere ties a Microsoft Store purchase across console and PC; Steam is its own door.
That split is the business half of the bet. A subscriber can download the campaign on October 6 for the monthly fee. A Steam buyer pays $69.99 and then writes the review the rest of the internet reads. Premium’s extra $30 over Standard buys the Bravo Squad weapon pack, seasonal cosmetic packs, 1,000 Iron, and those five extra days. The Coalition cannot control which queue a player stands in. It can only ship one build to all of them.
Horde Siege Puts 12 Players on One Map
Horde was the mode that kept older Gears nights alive after the credits. Horde Siege is the version built for Kalona. Official copy describes a large, connected slice of the city, not a tight arena, with multiple squads working at once. You pick a class, drop in as four, and share the map with two other squads. World bosses and shared objectives are the pitch. Survive, unlock cosmetics, and improve the loadout for the next match.
HOW HORDE SIEGE IS BUILT
- Player count: Up to 12 players in three squads of four on one map.
- Classes: Assault, Marksman, Medic, and Breacher, chosen before the drop.
- The city: A large version of Kalona with side jobs running beside the main push.
- The loop: Shared objectives and world bosses, then rewards that feed the next loadout.
Versus is the other half of the multiplayer suite: new maps, refined 4v4, Ranked and Social playlists, plus jump, vault, and slide on top of the old cover rules. Modern movement is the claim that will either make old Gears hands feel current or make them feel like the game got restless. Xbox’s listing still calls it a cover shooter. The new verbs are there so you can leave cover on purpose, not because the series forgot why cover existed.
Because embargo copies locked those modes, the 87 cannot be read as a verdict on a Tuesday night of Horde. Destructoid and other later notices already call the expanded Horde a reason to stay. Stone’s 77 went the other way on the campaign and still liked the multiplayer. That split inside the critic class is the honest one. The campaign is a three-day horror story with a known ending. Horde Siege is the product that has to justify a $69.99 shelf price after Game Pass users finish the story for free.
What Versus Ranked Still Has to Prove
The Coalition’s bet was never only a Metascore. It was that Gears could feel new without becoming a different series, that Emergence Day could carry a full campaign, and that a 12-player PvE mode plus Ranked 4v4 could hold a room after the credits. October 6 settled the first two in public, with an asterisk. Critics liked the shooting and the city. They were cooler on the script. Steam liked the game less than the press and aimed a lot of that heat at a new squadmate Xbox had put on the poster beside Marcus and Dom.
Kate Rayner can point at 60fps and MegaLights. Searcy can point at a rule that never cuts away from Bravo. Fawcette can point at a brotherhood that now has four names. None of that decides whether Ranked has a population in a month, or whether three squads still drop into Kalona when the campaign gif has stopped circulating. The original trilogy did not need a live calendar to matter. This one shipped with classes, Iron, and seasonal cosmetic packs, which means the studio is asking the Horde map to do work the 87 cannot do for it.
E-Day is out on Xbox Series X and Series S, on PC through the Xbox app and Steam, and in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Play Anywhere carries a Microsoft Store copy across console and PC. The Locust are above ground, the score is 87, and the mode that will tell you if the rebuild stuck is the one reviewers were not allowed to play first.
