Microsoft opened pre-orders on October 7 for the Surface Laptop Ultra, a 15-inch Windows notebook on Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip starting at $2,599.99. It is the most powerful Surface laptop the company has shipped, aimed at creators, developers, and local AI work, with most builds due October 16.

The chip, not the badge, is the move. RTX Spark is also going into partner PCs, and Microsoft will pay up to $1,000 for an eligible MacBook Pro traded in on the Microsoft Store.

Nvidia Built the Chip Microsoft Wrapped

Brett Ostrum, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Surface, said the laptop began as a Windows partnership around Nvidia’s silicon, after which Surface designed a new chassis to match it. The top RTX Spark N1X pairs a 20-core Nvidia Grace CPU with a Blackwell RTX GPU of 6,144 cores and up to 128GB of unified LPDDR5X memory. The smaller part uses an 18-core CPU and a 5,120-core GPU.

It started with a deep partnership to optimize Windows to take full advantage of NVIDIA’s RTX Spark Superchip. We then designed an entirely new device around the platform from the ground up.

Nvidia rates laptop Spark parts at 45 to 80 watts and quotes up to 1 petaflop of FP4 AI performance when sparsity is counted, plus local models up to 120 billion parameters. CUDA runs natively, which is the lure for people who already live in Nvidia’s software. The desktop Spark part is listed at 140 watts with the same 6,144-core GPU. That is a different thermal box than a thin notebook, and it is the envelope Microsoft is chasing with a desk machine in the same family.

Pavan Davuluri, executive vice president of Windows and Devices, put the Surface pre-order next to a Surface RTX Spark Dev Box and “new RTX Spark PCs from our partners,” and said Call of Duty is coming to RTX Spark in 2027.

Microsoft still sells the Ultra as its halo notebook. The silicon underneath is Nvidia’s first full Windows superchip, and Surface is the loudest, not the only, chassis for it.

$2,599.99 Buys the Smaller Spark Chip

The advertised floor is the 18-core machine with 24GB of unified memory, a 512GB SSD, Windows 11 Home, and Platinum paint. Apple sells the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro from $2,999, so the Ultra undercuts that tag by $400 at the door. That 16-inch Mac ships with 24GB and 1TB; the Surface build that matches those two numbers is $2,999.99.

SURFACE LAPTOP ULTRA US STORE PRICES

Chip Memory and storage Windows Price
18-core CPU, 5,120-core GPU 24GB / 512GB, Platinum Home $2,599.99
18-core CPU, 5,120-core GPU 24GB / 1TB Home $2,999.99
18-core CPU, 5,120-core GPU 32GB / 1TB Pro $3,299.99
20-core CPU, 6,144-core GPU 32GB / 1TB Pro $3,699.99
20-core CPU, 6,144-core GPU 48GB / 1TB, Nightfall Pro $3,999.99
20-core CPU, 6,144-core GPU 64GB / 1TB, Nightfall, Store exclusive Pro $4,299.99
20-core CPU, 6,144-core GPU 64GB / 2TB, Nightfall, Store exclusive Pro $4,699.99
20-core CPU, 6,144-core GPU 128GB / 1TB, Nightfall, Store exclusive Pro $5,899.99

Jumping from the 64GB 1TB Nightfall build to 128GB on the same 1TB drive adds $1,600. Microsoft’s own footnote says the GPU cannot use every byte of that pool, because the CPU and system still take a share. The 128GB configuration is listed to arrive as soon as November 25, not with the October 16 wave. Anyone buying the headline price is getting the smaller Spark part, Home edition, and half a terabyte of storage, which is a different machine than the 120-billion-parameter pitch.

Up to $1,000 for an Eligible MacBook Pro

The campaign line is “Break up with your MacBook.” On the Devices Blog, Microsoft says buyers who level up to Surface Laptop Ultra get up to $1,000 cash back after trading in an eligible MacBook Pro. That is not a spec fight. It is a check written to people who already own the computer Microsoft wants to replace.

MACBOOK PRO TRADE-IN RULES

  • The window: The extra cash applies to qualifying Ultra purchases from October 7, 2026 through November 23, 2026.
  • The store: The offer runs only on the Microsoft Store site in the United States and Canada, one claim per customer.
  • The inspection: Teladvance sets the payout after it sees the machine, which must power on, hold a charge, and arrive without a cracked screen or liquid damage.
  • The mail-in: The MacBook Pro has to be posted within 15 days of the online claim, with its original charger, accessories, and hard drive, and with no password lock.

Microsoft’s site says it is confident creators and developers “won’t look back” once they use the Ultra. The fine print is colder. Recycled units get no cash, ineligible machines can be shipped back, and the top $1,000 depends on the Ultra you buy as well as what Teladvance thinks the Mac is worth. Paying switchers is an admission that CUDA cores and a brighter panel are not, on their own, enough to pull a Final Cut or Xcode regular across the aisle.

A 2,000-Nit Touchscreen With No Pen

Microsoft calls the 15-inch PixelSense Ultra mini-LED the brightest, sharpest, and most vivid panel it has put on a Surface laptop. Peak HDR is 2,000 nits over a 10 percent window, which the company says is 25% higher than the published peak for the MacBook Pro with M5 Pro as of October 1, 2026, and the brightest peak HDR of any laptop then on sale. The 16-inch MacBook Pro is rated at 1,600 nits peak HDR. The Ultra panel is a 120 Hz touchscreen with 100% DCI-P3 and Dolby Vision IQ. It is not a pen computer; Surface Pen and Slim Pen are unsupported.

THE CHASSIS MICROSOFT IS SELLING

  • Size and weight: The shell is under 18 mm thick and under 4.5 lb, against 4.7 lb for the 16-inch MacBook Pro.
  • Cooling: A new thermal stack is rated at up to 2.5x the thermal power capacity of current Surface laptops, with bigger fans running slower.
  • Trackpad: The haptic pad is 30% larger than the pad on Surface Laptop 8th Edition.
  • Storage: The SSD is user-removable, so a drive can be upgraded, swapped, or pulled before a machine goes back.

Ports are the other half of the Mac pitch. There are three USB-C ports, USB-A, HDMI, a full-size SD reader, and a 3.5 mm jack, enough to drive up to three 4K displays. Magnetic Connect is the new trick: Microsoft calls it the world’s first built-in magnetic USB-C charging. Magnets sit around the right-side USB-C port, the included 140W cable snaps on and lets go, and that same port still takes ordinary USB-C gear. The other two USB-C ports are not magnetized. The box lists a 140W USB-C adapter and the magnetic cable. Fast charging needs at least 115W.

Nightfall is the darker finish; Platinum is the lighter one. The 48GB, 64GB, and 128GB builds are Nightfall only on the Store list. From 32GB up, the laptop ships with Windows 11 Pro.

Will x86 Apps Run on Surface Laptop Ultra?

Grace is an Arm CPU, so the Ultra runs Windows on Arm. Native Arm64 apps run as compiled. Everything else depends on Microsoft’s Prism emulation engine on Arm, which translates x86 and x64 code at runtime and caches the result. Microsoft’s Surface Arm FAQ says emulated apps can feel close to native on older Intel Surfaces, and that users should not notice a large gap aside from speed. It does not say emulation matches a native build, and the developer FAQ still tells people to ship Arm binaries if they care about battery and responsiveness.

Prism does not emulate drivers. Kernel-mode code, including many VPN clients, device drivers, and some security tools, has to be compiled for Arm64 or it will not load. Anti-cheat that sits in the kernel is the same trap. Creative apps that already ship Arm builds, including major Adobe tools, DaVinci Resolve, and Blender, are in a better place than a specialist plug-in last updated for Intel. The Ultra’s sales story is CUDA, 3D, and local models. That story holds if those tools are native, or if Prism stays out of the way. If a studio’s pipeline still needs an x86 dongle driver, the 6,144 cores will not matter.

Microsoft also says the laptop keeps over 99% of its power on battery, a shot at Windows machines that wilt when the charger comes out. That figure is a company claim, not a third-party bench, and it sits next to the usual footnote that life varies with brightness, radios, and load.

The Dev Box Ships in November for $5,999

The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is the same bet without a screen. It is $5,999, sold only on Microsoft.com in the United States, and it begins shipping in November. Microsoft specifies the 20-core Spark, 6,144 GPU cores, 128GB of unified memory, and a 2TB removable SSD. Nvidia’s desktop Spark listing is the 140 watt part. The Ultra’s 128GB laptop, at $5,899.99, is $99.01 cheaper and includes a 2,000-nit panel, so the Dev Box is for people who want the chip on a desk, not a bargain on memory.

Microsoft loads Visual Studio Code, Git, GitHub CLI, GitHub Copilot, WSL, Python, and Node before the unit leaves, and groups it with Project Zenith devices. The pitch is local inference and agent work without spending a cloud token on every run, with Microsoft Execution Containers to keep agents inside OS limits. That is also why the Ultra exists: a thin RTX Spark machine that can draft, render, and talk to a local model on a train. The Dev Box is the version that never has to close the lid.

Apple’s Touchscreen MacBook Is Rumored for October

Microsoft timed the Ultra for a crowded month. Partner RTX Spark PCs are due with the October 16 laptop wave. Apple has been reported as ready to show 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with touch OLED panels in October or November, machines already being tried with touch gestures on a rumored MacBook running a 27-series macOS build. Those notebooks are expected to use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips and to lose weight compared with the current 4.7 lb 16-inch model.

THE DATES AROUND THIS LAUNCH

  1. October 7, 2026: Microsoft opens Ultra and Dev Box pre-orders and starts the MacBook Pro cash-back window.
  2. October 16, 2026: Surface Laptop Ultra availability begins for the 18-core and most 20-core builds.
  3. November 23, 2026: The extra MacBook Pro cash-back offer ends.
  4. November 25, 2026: The 128GB Ultra is listed to arrive, with the Dev Box also due in November.
  5. 2027: Call of Duty is scheduled to arrive on RTX Spark.

A creator who wants CUDA, USB-A, an SD slot, a brighter HDR peak, and a charger that lets go can pre-order an Ultra now and, in the United States or Canada, mail a working MacBook Pro after it. A creator who wants the Mac toolchain, and who can wait for a rumored touchscreen OLED, still has a reason to sit on their hands through the same two months. Nvidia gets a Windows installed base either way, because the Spark parts in partner machines do not need anyone to leave Apple. Microsoft is the one writing the $1,000 check.

Numbers get particular attention here. A percentage in a business story is recomputed from the underlying figures before it goes live, a benchmark in a technology or gaming review is quoted with the conditions it was measured under, and a transfer fee or a lap time in the sports and auto pages is traced back to the club, the league or the timing sheet that published it. The same rule covers news, science, entertainment, lifestyle and travel: if a figure cannot be tied to a filing, a dataset, a transcript or a test Harry ran himself, it does not appear.
