USPS Columbus Day Closure Still Locks Ohio’s PO Boxes

The U.S. Postal Service will close post offices and skip regular mail delivery on Monday, October 12, 2026, for Columbus Day. That date already sits on the agency’s published holiday calendar, and it follows the same full stop Ohio posted for October 14, 2024.

On September 21, posts circulated that framed the day as a 24-hour blackout. The live question underneath that noise is narrower, and older: who still cannot pick up a letter, and who keeps moving anyway.

Ohio’s 2024 Closure Script Matches October 12

On October 11, 2024, the Postal Service told Ohio customers that retail windows would go dark the following Monday. The notice named three stops, not one, and it put a Tuesday restart on the same page.

Retail services at Ohio Post Offices will be closed on Monday, October 14th in recognition of Columbus Day. There will be no mail delivery, caller service or Post Office Box service. All services will resume on Tuesday, October 15th.

The 2026 holiday list names October 12 as Columbus Day, the same legal Monday with a new calendar date. Local notices in 2025, issued for October 13, again closed offices and limited what still moved to Priority Mail Express, with regular service the next day.

So the 2026 date is not a new policy. It is the next turn of a federal Monday the Postal Service already knows how to run.

What Stops When USPS Observes Columbus Day

On each of the 11 federal holidays in 2026, retail counters close and letter carriers stay off their routes. First-Class letters, Marketing Mail, magazines, and standard packages wait. Money orders and passport intake wait with them, because those jobs need a clerk.

THE 2026 POSTAL DARK DAYS

• The date: Columbus Day is Monday, October 12, 2026, on the Postal Service events calendar.
• The network: The agency says it serves 169 million addresses six and often seven days a week when it is running.
• The exception: Priority Mail Express is sold as a 7-day, 365-day product, with Sunday and holiday delivery in many major markets for an extra fee.
• The restart: Regular delivery and retail service are set to resume Tuesday, October 13, matching the next-day restart Ohio used on October 15, 2024.

Blue collection boxes still take outgoing mail. Pickup does not. A letter dropped on the holiday sits until the next business day. Tracking pages and Click-N-Ship stay up because they do not need a staffed window. Informed Delivery does not send fresh scans on a federal holiday, because there is no mail to photograph that day.

Locked Boxes Are the Part People Miss

Street delivery pausing for a day is the version most people already know. The Ohio notice went further. It shut caller service, the counter pickup line, and Post Office Box service, which means renters could not open their own boxes in a locked lobby.

That 2024 Ohio rule is the access shutdown. The 2025 local notices described a related but different limit: no delivery to street or Post Office Box addresses except Priority Mail Express. One year locked the box. The next year still allowed the premium product to land.

Commercial mailers were told to call their Bulk Mail Acceptance Unit for hours. Households got 1-800-ASK-USPS. Anyone holding a certified item, a held package, or a box they pay rent on is the customer who actually loses Monday, not the person whose porch is empty until Tuesday.

Some lobbies elsewhere stay open for kiosks and box holders after hours. Ohio’s 2024 wording did not leave that door ajar. For October 12, the safe read in Ohio is the last written local script: no mail delivery, caller service or Post Office Box service until the next day.

The Fed Closes, and the Stock Exchange Does Not

Federal offices close because Columbus Day is one of the eleven legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. § 6103, dated the second Monday in October. The Postal Service follows that list. Almost nobody else follows it the same way.

The Federal Reserve’s own table says the Reserve Banks close on October 12. Its service notice titles the day Indigenous Peoples’ Day/Columbus Day, a split the postal calendar does not make. The New York Stock Exchange’s 2026 holiday list skips the date, so stocks trade a full session. SIFMA recommends the bond market close.

OCTOBER 12, 2026, WHO WORKS

FedACH processing ends at 3 a.m. Eastern on Saturday, October 10, and resumes at 5:30 p.m. Eastern on Monday, October 12. A bank lobby can sit open and still post a transfer on Tuesday. Chase’s commercial holiday notice, as circulated for this cycle, says branches stay open while online transfers are treated as holiday activity, so repeating payments shift to the prior business day.

A three-business-day payment sent Thursday, October 8, counts Friday the 9th, Tuesday the 13th, and Wednesday the 14th. It does not count the postal Monday.

A 1968 Law Still Sends Carriers Home

Congress asked the president in 1934 to proclaim October 12 as Columbus Day. The date later moved off that fixed calendar day and onto a Monday, which is why it now slides between October 8 and October 14.

Title 36 still asks the president for a yearly Columbus Day proclamation. States, cities, and school boards set their own names and their own days off. Columbus City Council has recognized October 12 as Indigenous Peoples Day. The federal statute, and the postal list built on it, still say Columbus Day.

That split is why a person can go to work, trade a stock, and find a locked post office on the same Monday.

The Kiosk That Covers 80 Percent

Ohio’s 2024 notice pointed customers to self-service kiosks at select offices. The machines take debit and credit cards only, no cash. The Postal Service said the ATM-like kiosk can handle 80 percent of the jobs done at a retail counter.

WHAT THE KIOSK WILL AND WILL NOT DO

• Stamps and parcels: It sells stamps, weighs packages, and prints postage for Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express.
• Urgent drop-off: The Ohio notice listed shipping an urgent letter or package by Express or Priority Mail among the kiosk jobs.
• Cards only: The machine takes debit and credit cards and will not take cash.
• No clerk stamp: A kiosk can print postage, but it does not give the hand postmark a filing deadline often needs.
• Not every lobby: The machines sit at select Post Offices, and a building that locks for the holiday leaves the kiosk inside.

Find those sites on usps.com before you drive. If the lobby is locked, the 80 percent figure does not help. If you need a money order, a passport acceptance, or a box key, Tuesday is still the answer.

UPS Treats That Monday as a Workday

Private carriers do not copy the postal holiday list. The UPS holiday schedule suspends regular pickup and delivery on New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Columbus Day is not on that list, so regular UPS service is scheduled to run.

FedEx’s full close days are fewer: Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. On other federal holidays it often runs with earlier cutoffs. UPS Ground Saver and UPS Mail Innovations still add a business day when they hand the last mile to USPS, because that last mile is closed.

The practical split is simple enough to plan around. A Priority Mail Express piece can still move in many cities. A First-Class bill payment cannot. A UPS ground package can. A PO box in Ohio, if 2024 is the guide, cannot be opened. People asking whether “all packages” stop on October 12 are mixing those products into one scare headline.
