Nvidia Promises DLSS 5 on RTX 40 Without Player Sliders
Nvidia will bring DLSS 5 to RTX 40 GPUs later this fall, but players still get only an on or off toggle.
Nvidia will expand DLSS 5 to GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs later this fall, once it finishes tuning the model on RTX 50 cards. The first official build is already live in NBA 2K27 on 50-series hardware, and players still get a simple on or off switch.
That is a narrower gift than the leak that forced the conversation. Modders had the same neural renderer running on Ada cards, and then on Ampere, before the company put 40-series support on a calendar.
Nvidia Will Support RTX 40 After It Tunes the 50 Series
DLSS 5, Nvidia’s 3D-guided neural renderer, launched in NBA 2K27 on September 3, 2026 at 9pm Pacific Time for every GeForce RTX 50 desktop and laptop, and for GeForce NOW Ultimate streams from RTX 5080 cloud rigs. Visual Concepts and 2K are the first studio and publisher on the official path. The in-game switch is labeled DLSS Neural Rendering. Players can flip it during play with F9.
Two days before that driver went out, Nvidia’s launch post still described a 50-series product. Staff then updated the GeForce forum FAQ on September 3 with the Ada line. Spokesperson Rajal Maharaj later said the 50-series remains the focus, and that 40-series work starts after those cards are in a good place. RTX 30 and RTX 20 are not on that list.
Our current focus is on optimizing performance for the GeForce RTX 50 Series with model updates expected later this fall. Once RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned, we plan to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series.
NVIDIA Staff, GeForce forum FAQ, September 3, 2026
The written plan is expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series only after more 50-series model updates. Asked at a Gamescom briefing whether DLSS 5 was 50-series only, Nvidia said yes, and that there was no fallback path for RTX 40 or anything older. The FAQ landed after that answer, and after the leak had already ignored the gate.
Nvidia’s own speed claim is a 5X gain in six months, from a pair of RTX 5090s in March to a single 50-series card now. Fall updates are supposed to push that baseline again. Ada owners are being asked to wait for the leftovers of that curve.
A Leaked DLL and a Weekend of Patches
The nvngx_dlssnr.dll file turned up in an early-access build of NBA 2K27 in late August. RenoDX users injected it into Control, then into a pile of other PC games. RTX Remix modder Uncle Burrito patched the library for Ada Lovelace, and the same Discord then pushed an Ampere path. Turing cards got experimental FP16 builds that crashed as often as they drew a frame.
Ada is fast enough to make the argument uncomfortable for a 50-series lock. One RTX 4090 test of that Ada patch fell from about 135 FPS to 82 FPS, a 39 percent hit, which is ugly and also playable. Ampere is a different story. Community clips put Hogwarts Legacy around 30 FPS on an RTX 3090 and at 2 FPS on an RTX 3070. Deep Rock Galactic was shown at 4 FPS on an RTX 3080, down from 130-plus without the injector.
OFFICIAL SUPPORT VERSUS THE LEAK
| GPU family | Official DLSS 5 | Leaked runtime |
|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 50 (Blackwell) | Yes, September 3 in NBA 2K27 | Runs natively |
| GeForce RTX 40 (Ada) | Planned after 50-series tuning, later this fall | Runs via Ada patch |
| GeForce RTX 30 (Ampere) | No plan | Runs, often at single-digit FPS |
| GeForce RTX 20 (Turing) | No plan | Experimental, unstable |
The runtime gate in the leaked build reported an unsupported architecture on anything before Blackwell. The patches prove Ada can execute the model anyway. Nvidia’s 40-series promise now tracks that fact, just on a delay, and without the sliders the injectors already expose.
What DLSS 5 Does to a Finished Frame
Older DLSS features reconstruct a frame the renderer was already trying to draw, then add extra frames or cleaner lighting. Nvidia’s applied deep learning lab says DLSS 5 is the first in the suite to generate the final displayed look rather than approximate a costlier reference. It is a one-step pixel-space diffusion model, conditioned on the current engine frame, motion vectors, carried temporal state, and artist-direction values. The lab calls it the first productized generative renderer that runs in real time.
In practice the model reads a finished frame, guesses materials and lighting, and paints in effects studios usually skip to hold 60 FPS: subsurface scatter in skin, light through hair and leaves, tighter contact shadows. Nvidia says the geometry stays put, so silhouettes and face proportions are supposed to match what the engine authored. The March demos still rewrote faces enough that players called the look yassified. SIGGRAPH and Gamescom builds added more studio-side reins after that.
NBA 2K27 is a fair test case for the photoreal pitch, because Visual Concepts already scans real athletes. Senior producer Peter Kavic said the studio can set overall tone to match its art direction, then use a per-pixel mask on characters “given that we want to respect their likeness with the utmost care.” Nvidia’s own comparisons show light passing through ears, warmer skin under arena lamps, and sharper shadows on a jersey collar. Cade Cunningham, Tyrese Haliburton, and Jayson Tatum are the named examples.
The marketed frame rates bundle neural rendering with Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation, so they are not a clean tax on the new model. At 4K Ultra with ray tracing, an RTX 5090 is quoted at up to 370 frames per second in NBA 2K27. At 2560×1440 the same preset is quoted at up to 590 FPS on the 5090, 410 on the 5080, 350 on the 5070 Ti, and 260 on the 5070. Nvidia also says the model runs on every frame, so there is no minimum FPS gate. That last point matters on a 40-series card that will pay for the effect without Blackwell’s fifth-generation Tensor cores.
Players Get a Toggle, Studios Get the Dials
Maharaj said DLSS 5 is a simple on-or-off toggle for gamers, and that the granular artistic controls stay with developers. The launch article uses the same split: “For gamers, it is a simple on or off toggle.” Early Super Resolution shipped that way too, and many games later added quality presets or a percentage slider. Nvidia says studios can pass some of these new knobs through if they want. Nothing requires them to.
THE KNOBS PLAYERS CANNOT REACH
- Model selection: Studios pick among trained weights, and can use different models for gameplay, cutscenes, or indoor versus outdoor scenes.
- Structure Intensity: A lever for high-frequency adds such as ambient occlusion, reflections, and subsurface scatter.
- Tone Intensity: A lever for broader lighting and color; zero keeps the engine’s colors, higher values let the model retune tone.
- Automatic masking: Semantic isolation of faces, cloth, foliage, and other object classes without manual tags.
- Per-pixel masks: Engine-level isolation of props such as glassware, droplets, or leaves.
The leaked injectors already expose those intensity sliders, which is why the official lock feels like a product decision rather than a technical one. Launch-day posts still asked Nvidia for a driver override that would hand the same dials to owners. The company is not offering one.
That split is also the live fight over the look. Photoreal games can absorb extra skin scatter and still read as the thing the director wanted. Stylized games take the same prior and come back with a beauty-filter pass, which is how Cloud Strife and a dozen other injected characters turned into a meme. Unreal technical artists have compared the lighting to an early-2000s HDR photo grade. Nvidia’s official GeForce post still sells developer control as the fix.

Replies under that post called the effect a slop filter and treated the artistic-vision line as a joke. The argument has not moved since March. The only new fact is that the official build now hides the knobs that let a player pull the look back.
Fifteen Games Named in March, One Ships Now
On March 16, 2026 at GTC, Nvidia said DLSS 5 would arrive this fall with backing from Bethesda, CAPCOM, Hotta Studio, NetEase, NCSOFT, S-GAME, Tencent, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros. Games. Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s founder and CEO, called it “the GPT moment for graphics.” Todd Howard said Bethesda wanted it in Starfield and future titles. CAPCOM’s Jun Takeuchi tied it to Resident Evil. Charlie Guillemot of Vantage Studios said it was letting the team build the worlds it wanted on Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
The newsroom list named games including Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy, plus Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Resident Evil Requiem, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, AION 2, Black State, CINDER CITY, Delta Force, Justice, NARAKA: BLADEPOINT, Neverness to Everness, Phantom Blade Zero, Sea of Remnants, Where Winds Meet, and more. That is 15 named titles. NBA 2K27 was not among them. It is the only game shipping the feature on day one.
Asked to reconfirm Shadows, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield, Resident Evil Requiem, and the rest of that original set, Nvidia would not name them. The reply was, “More games are on the way. Many developers are actively integrating DLSS 5, and we’ll share updates on upcoming titles as partners finalize their integrations.” The launch article ends the same way, promising more titles in the coming weeks and months without a second name.
WHAT WE KNOW
- Shipped: NBA 2K27 on RTX 50-series PCs and GeForce NOW Ultimate, with an optional DLSS Neural Rendering toggle.
- Promised: Official RTX 40 support after further 50-series tuning, with model updates due later this fall.
- Locked: Player-facing control stays on or off unless a studio exposes extra settings.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The 15 March titles: Nvidia will not reconfirm Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Resident Evil Requiem, or the rest of that list.
- An Ada ship week: “Later this fall” is not a date, and 30-series cards have no official path.
- In-game sliders: Studios may pass Structure and Tone controls through; none of the launch materials require it.
Integration is supposed to be light. Nvidia points developers at Streamline and an Unreal Engine 5 plugin, and says the model can tag silverware versus furniture on its own. Semantic masking is the sales pitch for why a studio does not have to hand-label a scene. If partners are still “finalizing,” the holdup is not a missing checkbox in the SDK. It is whether they want this look on their characters after six months of screenshots they did not approve.
Frame Generation Wrote This Hardware Lock First
Nvidia has run this exclusivity pattern before. DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction eventually reached every RTX generation. The expensive new trick at each launch stayed on the new silicon.
HOW EACH DLSS LOCK LANDED
- October 12, 2022: DLSS 3 Frame Generation debuts with the RTX 4090, tied to Ada’s Optical Flow Accelerator and fourth-generation Tensor cores; RTX 30 is left out.
- August 22, 2023: DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction is opened to all RTX cards, while Frame Generation stays a 40-series extra.
- January 2025: DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation launches as an RTX 50 feature; 40-series cards keep 2x frame generation, with later limited MFG exceptions in a few titles.
- March 16, 2026: DLSS 5 is unveiled at GTC as a fall release, sold as the biggest graphics jump since real-time ray tracing in 2018.
- Late August 2026: The NBA 2K27 DLL leaks; Ada and Ampere patches follow within days.
- September 1, 2026: The launch article and Gamescom briefing still describe a 50-series product with no 40-series fallback.
- September 3, 2026: NBA 2K27 ships the toggle at 9pm PT, and the FAQ adds a 40-series plan for later this fall.
Frame Generation needed Ada’s optical-flow block, which Ampere does not have. Multi Frame Generation was sold as a Blackwell Tensor-core job. DLSS 5 is being sold the same way, until the FAQ. The leak showed the architecture check was a gate, not a brick wall. Ada can run the model. Nvidia would still like a season of 50-series exclusivity while it squeezes more speed out of that 5X curve.
Existing DLSS remains a separate stack. Nvidia says Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction stay supported. DLSS 4.5 already uses AI to draw 23 of every 24 pixels on screen, and the suite is in more than 750 games. Neural rendering sits on top of that as an optional look pass, not a replacement for the performance features 40-series owners already paid for.
Ampere Cards Remain Outside Official Support
Maharaj’s sequence is blunt. Fifty-series first, then a look at 40-series. There is no equivalent sentence for Ampere. Community injectors will keep that hope alive, at frame rates that make the point for Nvidia. A feature that turns a 3080 into a slideshow is not a product. It is a screenshot machine.
Ada is the cohort that can actually use a future official build, which is why the walk-back landed there. Those boards still make up a huge installed base, and Nvidia has been careful about a market for aging GeForce cards. A generative renderer that only Blackwell can run would age a 4080 faster than a driver that eventually lights it up, even as a heavy optional toggle. The company gets to keep 50-series as the tuned, launch-day path either way.
What owners will not get, on 50-series now or on 40-series later, is the leaked control surface. Structure Intensity, Tone Intensity, model picks, and masks stay in the SDK. NBA 2K27’s F9 key is a preview of that contract: the effect is on, or it is off. The March list of 15 games is still a press release, not a ship schedule. And the cards that ran the leak the hardest, the 30-series boards that dipped into single digits, are not even in the sentence about looking next.
